Agree on feeling what I've seen of this perf is badly edited, although they did a nice job with Guerin. Platel's variations have a lot of shots where you see torso and face when you know feet and legs are doing something you want to see. Nothing will *ever* make me like this version of the dance with the flower basket (much prefer Makarova/Lanchberry music and steps). It just looks like it belongs in Stomp. But Guerin does it better than anyone I've seen, preserving some delicacy.
Less is more - the most sophisticated interpretation of Nikiya's part. So sincere, unpretentious and very moving. No artificial ornaments, grimaces, showing off her elasticity. I like the costumes Thanks heaven she does not look like some kinde of Sheherezade comparing with russians versions.
I have seen many variations of this on youtube. She is my favorite. She exumes the sadness needed for this scene, and she dances it beautifully. I like Zakharova, but she always seems lacking in her emotions.
@manderson610 Sorry, but this is the Russian method. This is Nureyev´s last ballet for the Paris Opera. Because he was already very sick(he died 3 months later)he asked the sublime Ninel Kurgapkina(his partner of the Leningrad years) to come from Russia and finish training the dancers.
I love Isabelle Guerin, everything about her is beautiful. the only thing is, I don't feel her Nikiya. She barely shows any emotion at all. This part is supposed to be heart- wrenching to Nikiya because she's been betrayed...I don't see that.
When she receives the basket of flowers with the snake hidden there, she imagines that it comes from solor. Then, she becomes happy ; that's why there's no tragedy at this moment. (Sorry, my english is bad ; I hope I'm clear).
The video quality is not all that good, so I can't really see the expression on her face, but it doesn't matter anyway, cause her moves and her body show all the emotions!
This is so beautiful, and so is the music!!! The music of this entire ballet is magnific, one of my favorites!
I know she's too thin, but ballet dancers need to be thin in order for the men to pick them up. Plus, it's hard to be a professional dancer and NOT be too thin, with the amount of excersize they get. Plus, the video is squished so she looks thinner than she actually is...

darn, I'm spoiled by SYTYCD. By far they don't have these great dancers. But the choreographies are so much more action based. Several times in this piece I got bored and imagined what a current freestyle version of this could do better.
The real musical name of this part is : n°27 Allegro by Leon Minkus - it's the last part of the first CD in the complete recording of Minkus La Bayadère and the last variation in the first Act by the same way-. You can find this music on this CD or maybe it's possible to download it. I quite don't know ;).
This is by far the best version of la bayadere, this is simply perfect.
There might be different interpretation but everything is so nicely done is this one. Nikiya (Isabelle) is not abusing her strength nor her flexibility, every line is perfectly and carefully placed - and they speak of sorrow. Also the music is so nicely put so that it fits the atmosphere perfectly.

yeah that's what i was thinking as well. i read the synopsis to understand the story better and it said that with the flowers it's supposed to be a happy jig because she thinks they're from solar and zakharova's version is more energetic. still a fab performance don't get me wrong but i think it'd be easier to follow the story if she'd upped the tempo with the flowers.
not necessarily. French dancers are more restrained than Russian ones. And for a plus, her footwork is far more precise than Zakharova, Vishenva, Asylmuratova..
I said it before, and I will say it again...this music and Ms. Guerin's dancing are absolutely beautiful. San Francisco Ballet has NEVER done La Bayadere, I would love to see it in a near future. For now, I am content to watch this on DVD.
