  • I loved this movie :3

  • She looks like Lady Gaga, but a more beautiful version.

  • Yentl was successful at the box office, opening at #5 at the US box office upon its limited release weekend and stayed in the top 10 for 9 weeks, peaking at number 3, in its 3rd week. The film went on to gross more than $40 million

  • LOOOOVE this movie.

  • This movie is somewhat like Twelfth Night, only her father and brother are both dead... But the same love triangle persist... Like Duke Orsino madly in love with Lady Olivia, Lady Olivia madly in love with Sebastian (aka Viola), Sebastian (aka Viola) madly in love with Duke Orsino

  • rollman.... that was ugly. I think shes lovely as is.

  • ...How the heck do you let it go so far as to get married to another woman?

  • Umm I REALLY wanna see this :)

  • If she must study She should of gone to Hogwarts She has the nose for a witch

  • @Rollman1 :OOOOOOO omg that nose is beautiful its jewish kk shut up shes more famous then you could ever be

  • Funny Girl meets Fiddler on the Roof

  • If the religion here was Islam If this took place in a Muslem country Mohamed Yentl

would have gotten her head cut off for pulling that off

  • This movie is based on a true jewish short story.

  • There is no bigger Barbra Streisand fan than I, and I have yet to ever make it through this God awful silly snoozer .... despite its fantastic score.

  • @mikesterSTLMO And the real silly part is dident her study partner ever notice her facesal hair never starts to grow

  • Did She's The Man steal the plot for this or what? Haha

  • @sportzbabe0901

this movie is based on a short story by nobel prize winner

    yiddish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer.

  • @sportzbabe0901 She's The Man is based on Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." There are many movies based on this concept. To name a few...Mulan, Just One of the Guys (80's movie), the list goes on and on. Shakespeare is classic.

  • @sportzbabe0901 Actually She's the Man stole the plot of Twelth Night, a play by Shsakespeare

  • @sportzbabe0901 She's the Man is based off of Twelfth Night by Shakespeare - they even use the same names.

  • @sportzbabe0901

She's The Man is an adaptation of Twelfth Night, a Shakespeare play.

  • @sportzbabe0901 She's the man is based on Twelfth Night.

  • @sportzbabe0901 She's The Man is actually based on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.

  • @sportzbabe0901 Actually, She's the Man "stole" its plot from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.

  • Thanks to Glee, I want to watch this movie :D

  • I love Barbra streisand's voice!!!!

  • Great score and cinematography, storyline and screenplay ... not so much.

  • i'm hungry for some KREK-LAK!

  • I'd love to see this one again!

  • Yentl por TCM, Hoy a las 9pm, no hay que perdérsela!!!!!!

  • This trailer sound like a bad ben stiller comedy.

Hey by the way, who is this man with the red hair? I am pretty sure to have already heard this annoying voice somewhere

  • Great movie...and the underlying wisdom about law vs life is quite profound.

  • I watched the film for the first time last night. Not gonna lie, I bought it for the Mandy Patinkin content (especially the river scene), but I actually really liked it.

  • YENTL!

  • oh i love this movie so much...and barbra...and the hot jewish guy...

  • wunderful ..i love this movie...

  • Fantastico ! Emocionante ! Eternamente Streisand...

  • Thank you Michel Legrand.

  • Do you want me to transcribe it?

  • Grande Streisand !

  • Wow I've seen lots of watered down versions of this but THIS looks serious!

  • que horror esos dias en que las mujeres tenian solo un camino, pero ahora hay muchas que se horrorisan de tantos caminos que llevar y no pueden ver cual les conviene.

  • I remember watching this trailer back when the movie was being advertised on "Super Channel back in the 80's...This trailer is made me a Streisand fan..lol

  • i love this movie so much!

  • I love this movie, it is one of my favourites. Streisand does a terrific job as a director and an actress. Still: there is always one thing that bothered me: every idiot should have noticed that she was a girl dressed as a boy. There was a scene where tailors are measuring her to make her wedding costume (when Anshel marries Hadass). She does not have a D cup, but it is still a bit wierd that they did not noticed some things when they measured her chest.

  • Its a small Jewish mirracle :)

  • there's one scene in the movie where u can see how she tighded her chest.

    but anyway....

...its just fairytail not historic document!

need to be more "open minded" about it

    ;)

  • @CF1975

Same happended with the He-Man cartoons. Nobody noticed that Prince Adam was 100% look-a-like He-Man. (well, a little tanned) but still the same.

Even Cranger and Battle Cat were the same!

    Weird things of the 80´s...

  • How very "Twelfth Night".:):P

And IT'S THE GUY FROM "CRIMINAL MINDS"!!!...And "PRINCESS BRIDE"!:):P

  • what is the song she is singing in this trailer?

  • "A Piece of Sky"

  • When she says/sings that Papa always wanted to dance at her wedding...

"But something tells me that I'm right, you wouldn't want to dance tonight..."

(The "just the usual wedding nerves" thing reminded me of that part. ^_^)

    =^___^=

  • Giggle...the trailer includes the part with "just the usual nerves before the wedding". ^_~

    (Sure, THAT'S all it is...mm-hm. ^_~)

    ^_~

  • Seeing the trailer makes me see the scenes in a different way (I never, EVER saw this trailer before...they should put it on Turner Classic Movies, which does have a lot of other movie trailers!).

    SuperClaire,

Not to get too picky or anything, but their names actually are spelled Yentl and Avigdor. Your spelling was pretty close to that, though. (And I love that part of the movie too. ^_^)

("I wanted to be near you." "Why?" "I didn't want to lose you." "Why?" "I loved you!")

  • I love this film especially when Yentle says to Avictor that she is a woman.

  • If anyone ever makes The Steven Spielberg Story into a movie, Barbra should play Steven. OK give me thumbs down but I don't mean it as an insult. She'd be great.

  • I was 13 when I saw this movie, I remember as if it was yesterday (I'm talking about 1983). I loved this woman already, but she became number one since then. And she would never. When we were deeply glad to see what she would be giving us (and that was more than enough), she came and gave us more and more and more, throwing that arrow in our hearts again and again and again, showing that nothing was impossible. Well, that moves me since then. Thank you, beautiful gougeous funny girl Streisand!

  • Her voice has always been the most beautiful I've ever heard, and after over 20 years, the clips of Mandy still make my heart race.

    Wonderful movie!

  • I love this film. God bless Barbra.

  • Some people, younger ones these days, don't know that this was the first major Hollywood movie to be directed, produced and starring a female. This is a great film and love story.

  • I love this movie, Ibelieve everyone should see it!!!

  • Wow... this films twisted!

  • where could i find this movie?? i want to watch it so badly

  • Good news. It has just been released

    in DVD format.

  • @andreroxy11 if you have netflix, you can watch it instantly on ur computer.

  • @andreroxy11 ...Have you heard of Amazon?

  • I love this movie it makes me cry. its so powerfull and brilliant ...I love Avigdor and Im just simply no spech front of all that wonderfull Barbra's talent. She is unic!!!!!

  • Has Barbra Streisand ever scared

anyone to death? Well? Has she?

  • this is THE MOST JEWISHY FILM EVER!

  • Great movie. A true classic. I just found out that Kat Kramer is going to have a special screening for people who worked on it. It's going to be at the Stanley Kramer Theatre in Hollywood. Too bad it's not open to the public.

  • This is a good film Give her a break she worked her ass off to get it made . I'd like to hear any of you hold a note for 45 seconds at the end..

  • One of her more deeper movies. i just watched NUTS 4 like the millionth time :-) BS ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!

  • shoul women be allowed to geto out of the kitchen and so on?

Yes but only without love and far from their roots: in a word... alone

  • BEAUTIFUL film!

  • Didn't something like "three people" pay to see this picture when it came out in the theaters?

  • It was a huge sucess in 1984, and was

    nominated for many academy awards.

And not only in the U.S. but also overseas.

  • Yentl grossed $40,218,899.00 in 1983 and was the 18th highest grossing film that year. It received 5 Academy Award nominations and Streisand won the Golden Globe for Best Director. Steven Spielberg called it the best directorial debut since Citizen Kane.

  • @saltheshoe Yentl grossed over $40,000,000.00 the year it was released and was one of the top 20 grossing films released that year. Streisand won the Golden Globe for Best Director becoming the first woman to win that award. The film also won the Golden Globe for Best Picture Comedy or Musical. Yentl received five Academy Award nominations and won for Best Musical Score.

  • @saltheshoe No.

  • so does she get the kosher salami in the end?

  • oh this looks good...

    HELLO NETFLIX!

  • Barbra best finally coming to DVD!!!!

  • awesome movie

  • Excellent news: the DVD will FINALLY be released for the US in Feb 2009. Both B&N and Amazon have it for pre-order.

  • What a great trailer. I performed in Fiddler on the Roof with Nehemiah Persoff a year before he played papa in Yentl....so this has great sentimental value.

  • This was the first time I had seen the trailler, and it DOES NOT do the movie justice.

I was able to find an old VHS copy at a flea market about 10 years ago, but I would love to get this on DVD.

  • it doesn't?

is the movie any better than the trailer cause the trailer looks pretty good!

  • Oh yes! The trailer (although nice) makes the movie seem like a comedy. Although it has funny moments, it is a drama about what people will do for love.

The icing on the cake is the great music in the movie and how it propels the story. I can't listen to the music without getting goosebumps, or watch the movie without getting a tear in my eye.

I hope you enjoy it when you see it. : )

  • i LOOOVE this movie!!

  • AWSOME THATS MY NAME!

  • How much reality is one suppossed to suspend accepting the notion that a women that petitie, that female in appearance and voice was suppossed to pass as a man? I could have seen Rosie O'Donnoll pull it off, but not Barbra Steisand.

  • plus, those NAILS

  • I Know, I know. But think 17th century - who would ever suspect a woman trying to pull this off? And please try to imagine Rosie O Donnell singing these lovely songs?? See why I love my barbara? She was perfect in it.

  • I love her voice! not just singing but talking too!

  • Someday Yentl will be released on DVD. When it finally comes out it will be wondeful!

  • Since they (UA) waited so long to release it,

I hope they have added a yiddish language audio track as a bonus. Yidddish actors can dub the dialogue, and Barbra Streisand can sing her songs in yiddish, a language she knows well.

  • I'm glad to have the trailer. Which would, o'course, be on the DVD - if we ever SEE the DVD! I'm fed up with waiting for it - and with Streisand. I saw this 25 times in the theater. I've seen the VHS a dozen times. No greater fan can exist for this brilliant tour-de-force of a film. Yet her procrastination - she shouldn't insult us, as on "Oprah," by implying it's not her fault - is too much. FIX that color already! Let go of it all! No DVD after 15, 20 ... now, 25 YEARS, in '08? Who knows!

  • Streisand doesn't control the release - it's MGM, which is now distributed by Fox. It's all done - the film, the commentaries, everything.

  • Barbra said on Oprah that UA ( United Artist)

owns the film. Did MGM buy UA ( United Artist)

lately. I know that Tom Cruise bought a large

part of United Artist. Maybe we should write

to him. Do Barbra and Tom Cruise get along well? anyone knows?

  • It could well be "done," yep, as to her habit of over-twiddling. Yet I know how well connected BJS is throughout Hollywood. If she leaned on any six of her mogul friends to get a 25th Anniversary DVD released, it would be on the schedule in a month - 500,000 orders instantly. Her bud David Geffen alone could buy it from the dregs of MGM/UA in 5 minutes and get it going. If she wanted it enough, we'd have it. It pains me to say, but by now I doubt she TRULY wants to bother. Not much, anyway.

  • You know your stuff!

  • I agree. To be a Streisand fan is also to be a bit frustrated, right? I am desperately wanting to have YENTL on DVD as well. I'm also wanting to see some of those great TV specials (The Burt Bacharach Special, the Concert at the Forum, etc) released with all those recordings she's made but never used on albums. But I know I have to be patient because I already own everything she's done. What's left to look forward to if I have EVERYTHING she's never released already?

  • Spreading this frustration is needless, methinks, on her part. They're not beating down doors to offer her movies. (Well, "Meet the Parents 3" is in the works. Oy!) Why not supervise the release of a "Just for the Record" set for video, as well as this "Yentl" disc? She's not that busy. I see her not doing these from a lack of will and choices, not from any corporates standing in her way. She'd make them richer. She's wowed them before. Sadly, she just doesn't WANT to that much.

  • Wow! Why have I never heard of this movie? It looks really good :-) Thanks for posting the trailer, albertdiner

  • OMG! You haven't heard of this? YOU NEED TO WATCH IT NOW!!!!! You can search yentl part one and watch it in parts. BEST MOVIE EVER!

  • Sweet! I know what I am doing tonight :-) I heard "Papa, Can You Hear Me" the other day, and I was like what a great song, I wonder where it is from? lol Thanks, Soon2Belphie!

  • Aweomeness.Have yo seen it yet?

  • He vivido y vivo gracias a esta película. He muerto y resucitado, he llorado y reído gracias a esta película.

    Siempre querré ser Yentl

  • que gran pelicula que gran voz y que gran final

  • uno dei miei film preferiti di Barbra..

    splendido musical!

  • The songs are great but the theme of the movie is really against Judaism as a whole. she caused g-d fearing men to go against jewish law . in short, it is quite disturbing.

  • It's not really against Judaism...just against some of the gender roles.

  • A great streisand movie! I can't wait for the movie to be released on DVD in the USA! What is taking so long?

  • This is one of the best movies of Barbra's, for sure... a powerful story so beautifully captured.

  • I can understand why you would give up the Anglicans too obsessed with comforting the comfortable. Was your wife Orthodox, Reform or Conservative? It matters.Depends which sect of Judaism you want to convert to

  • I hadn't seen this movie since I was a kid, but I watched it today for the first time in a long time and fell in love with it all over again...:)

  • My advice to the Xtian who wants to become a Jew. You go to a Messianic Congregation and before you know it, you will be coming to see us and the rabbi will refuse you three times before you convert to the Judiasm. I think you will like it OK.

  • Dear Joeo. Who wants to convert himself to Judaism ? My wife is jewish and I am not. And we've been married for 16 years now. She has certain beliefs, though not practicant, and I am a neo-pagan (although I was brought up by the Anglicans). There was no problem from the anglican church to marry us. But the rabbi almost fainted when I told him I had no religion. I cannot understand why you segregate people that way. I asked that rabbi, he didn't reply. So, can YOU answer my question ?

  • If you mean segragating males and females, I think I can answer that question for you. I am a 20 year old orthodox female! I do not feel underprivileged at all! Women and men have different roles in Judaism and in life... Neither of them are of lesser importance... I am fully educated in Hebrew Studies (bible, philosophy modern language...) and in secular studies. We are kept separate so that we can focus on our goals in life without distraction and to keep marriage sacred...

  • Brilliantly put;I am over 20 years older then you and I feel completely fulfilled with my life as an orthodox woman, much more fulfilled then I did before I chose the orthodox path when I was in my 20's.

  • I don't think the person understands that under the Eastern European jewish tradition men and women who ar not related are kept separated toinsure family purity at the wedding! Women did NOT get education - in my family, they were NOT allowed to learn Hebrew. She let the two marry and she went to America where she get the opportunity to study! Orthodox society is still EXTREMELY man-contolled!

  • I own the soundtrack and I love, love, looooove it deeply!!! I've never saw the movie but I really want to loving the music!! Is it available on DVD??

  • I got this on DVD last week!

  • WOW....how did I miss this?

  • OMG It givesm me chills watching this trailor even though I've seen the film about 50 times!! Let THIS YEAR, the 25th anniversary, be the year for the DVD release. COME ON, Barbra!!

  • HI there

I've also seen the movie many times - What country do you think she is going to when she gets on the ship, a the end.

    Is it America or Israel?

  • Definately America, Ellis Island, New York.

This ending created a big argument between

Barbra Streisand and Isaac Bashevis Singer,

the writer of the short story YENTL THE

YESHIVA BOY. Why should Yentl be going to

    America, argued I.B. Singer.

  • Why wouldn't she want to go to America? I don't understand I.B. Singer's argument. Where did Yentl go in the book? And what's the whole deal with the DVD release? Is Barbara Streisand preventing the movie from coming out on DVD or something?

  • " Why would she decide to go to America? Weren't there enough yeshivas in Poland or in Lithuania where she could continue to study? Was going to America Miss Streisand's idea of a happy ending for Yentl? What would Yentl have done in America? Worked in a sweatshop 12 hours a day where there is no time for learning? Would she try to marry a salesman in New York, move to the Bronx or to Brooklyn and rent an apartment with an ice box and a dumbwaiter? " Comment by I.B. Singer in the

    NYTIMES.

  • Oh I see. But what about the DVD release? I would love to own this film on DVD. My old VHS tape is really worn out.

  • Barbra streisand said on TV that she does not

own the movie. It is owned by UNITED ARTISTS.

Tom Cruise recently purchased an important

share of United Artists. Does he have control

over the release of Yentl?, I dont know.

Streisand asked the audience to write to

    United Artists.

  • I saw this movie countless times and I learned every word of every song. I used to go out to our back yard late at night so I could sing to the sky. I used to pretend that I was Barbra. Poor neighbours - LOL

  • A beautiful movie. I saw 3 times on 3 days continuous.

  • One of my all time FAVORITE movies! I can't wait for it to be released on DVD. Bravo Barbara! (I saw this movie when I was 15 and fell in love with Judaism. I determined to read the Talmud - sorry if it's spelled incorrectly. Well, it was a lot to read...so I just saw the film a bunch of times instead). Much love to my Jewish brothers and sisters - from their Christian cousin.

  • rhe wondiful movie i liked

  • Doesn't anyone find it irritating that this film has not yet been released to DVD???

This film looks wonderful; Barbra Striesand is wonderful as always!!!

  • Who does one beg to get the DVD out?

  • is ur name really Yentl?

  • it realy funny my name is Yentl :P

    XxX

  • im Kvelling!!!!!!!

  • I love Yentl! It inspires me everytime i watch it!

  • awesome awesome awesome movie amazing book!

  • The most wonderful movie i have ever seen.

  • One of my favourites films!!! Thanks!!!

  • Stunning movie she was brilliant

  • Naprawde wspanialy film!

  • I loved this movie so much! Amy Irving and Barbara Steisand had such chemistry.

  • Anyone is waiting for the DVD to come out?

  • The DVD is out, I have it. C:

  • Thwe DVD came out in Europe and Israel, but

not in the U.S.. The European version does

not include the deleted scenes, and extras

that are planned for the U.S. version. There

will be directors comment by Barbra Streisand,

and color correction done by Barbra. So we

    wait...

  • Thank you for the info. I saw those versions on Amazon. But I'm waiting for the US version. :-)

  • The whole thing is finished and ready to go... has been for a long time. Next year is the 25th Anniversary - I'd bet my money on next year.

  • I would suggest to Barbra to add a yiddish

languagua option to the DVD, and to have her

record her 6 songs in yiddish. The movie is based on the yiddish short story YENTL, THE

YESHIVA BOY, by Isaac Bashevis Singer. Yentl

spoke yiddish to her father as well as to

Avigdor and the yeshiva boys. Include a

    yiddish language track.

  • This movie is great. I cried when I saw it.

  • To jeden z najpiękniejszych Filmów muzycznych

  • love this movie so much hehe

  • Amy Irving is really beautiful in this movie, too. She's such a great actress, and I wonder why she hasn't done more movies than she has?

  • Mandy Patinkin is sooooo scrumptios in this!!! I am DYING to own it on DVD when the Region 1 comes out,IF it ever does!GRRRR!I want to finally get to see the ENTIRE film and not just tidbits!*sigh*

  • oh i'm gonna LOVE this movie! ^_^

  • I absolutely adore Barbras voice and acting talent!!! She is like my musical theater idol haha. Im so mad you can't find this movie anymore. Does anyone know if and where I can find it on DVD?

  • Yentl has been avaliable on Dvd in Europe for a While now.But as yet not avaliable in the U.S, There is a planned Region 1 release but so far it's still on hold. You could get it from Amazon U.K or Amazon France but you would need a Multi region Dvd Player!

  • the most beautiful movie love ..ill ever seen before

  • heheheh, mandy. what a girlie name.

  • Wasn't he in that film "Princess Bride". Remember the dude who goes: "My name is Diego Montoia, you killed my father, prepare to die".

  • Yes. He played Avigdor in Yentl, and the swashbuckler in The Princess Bride. His name is Mandy Patinkin.

  • yes that's him. his name in Princess Bride is actually "Inigo Montoya" though.

  • Thank you, I never saw this back in 1982. i lived in the middle of no where. Thank you. I needed to hear, "Nothing's Impossible" tonight.

  • Eu adorei este filme, é lindo demais.

  • Barbra YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED< I LOVE YOU SO< YOU ARE AN ANGEL! NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT AWAY FROM YOU> LOVE JIMBO

  • I rather enjoyed the movie and the songs in it.
