  • Even re-watching this almost a week later, I am crying at the beginning of this segment just remembering how Fry was impacted.

  • The proper pronunciation of surany is not like shuranee. It is like shuran, where n is like n in new. It is kinda disturbing for my ears.

  • What a beautiful human being Fry is. Honored to be on the planet with him

  • @kreutzbacher Well stop learning English then. Give us a reason to learn your language.

  • I cried when he cried....

  • S Fry,si vous n'existiez pas,il faudrait vous inventer ...

  • Sie wurden in den Jahren nationalsozialistischer Gewaltherrschaft 1938-1945 vertrieben, deportiert, ermordet

  • Under the names on the plaque it says 'In the years of national socialist dictatorship 1938-1945 they were driven out, deported and murdered'. (Sie wurden in den Jahren nationalsozialisticher Gewaltherrschaft 1938-1945 vertrieben, deportiert, ermordert).

    What for.

  • That hit hard.

  • We can never let this happen again. The horrors the Jews went through...the horrible things we do to each other. It sickens me. It made me so very sad to see how that elderly woman was treated by the guard. You can see the fear in her eyes. It disturbed me to my very soul.

  • @kimmi307 I so agree with you. Nothing angers me more than the fools that claim that the mass murdering of Jews never took place. There are more of them than you think. I just saw the american version of this show with liza Kudrow, and the comments there are full of those claims.

  • you'd figure that with all the knowledge stephen possesses he would find the world slightly dull, but on the contrary he seems to find every little thing amazing and somewhat enchanting. He really is a wonderful man

  • What you have to remember is that the soliders ware ppl too. Ofc some of them can be labeld as "bad" ppl. But most of them ware just soilders. Folowing orders. Please dont missunderstand, i dont suport nazism.

  • @MonopolyTB I understand what you are saying. But at the Nuremberg trials all the Nazi leaders said they were innocent because they were just following orders. That cannot be used as an excuse. Each man had his own mind, his own heart. They were given power and only abused it.

  • I had to lol when Stephen started to blubb...it was pathetic in an endearing kind of way, you could just imagine his gramps saying "pull yourself together man!" :-)

  • He is the most charming man. Oh I am such a fan! Wish I could meet him one day.

  • 08:02 does'nt look blue to us Stephen

  • "it's a cliche but it's a gorgeous one!"... Who but Mr Fry could say something like that?

  • Seeing Stephen sitting at the Gasometer in Vienna is so strange! I work right next to it and i'm so miffed that i didn't walk by when he was there... i probably did before or after he had been there!! What rotten luck...

  • The clip at 5.55 of the guard forcing the old ladies head up made me bawl.

  • @RNDSapphire Ugh. I know. Me too. :/

  • @Maialeen me three

  • @RNDSapphire My heart just sank. The look of abject fear on the poor dear woman's face. How could anyone behave so inhumanly to another. The Nazis were so incredibly evil.

  • @tubette69 it bothered me too

  • @RNDSapphire. That is one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever witnessed. I am still crying.

  • Šurany my hometown :)

  • OMG, Stephen´s grandad is from former Czechoslovakia. I was born there too!

  • I've watched this about 5 or 6 times, and I cry everytime...

  • I fear my comment about the Nürnberg-Laws was slightly misunderstood by some of you, I certainly never meant to offend anybody; especially not Stephen Fry and his lovely family....I myself have jewish relatives!

  • I know that most people that comment on youtube are very young. You are all entitled to your opinions. But there's no need to be hurtful. I know I sound soft, but to anyone with jewish relatives who went through world war 2 and survived to make us, I think we should be very grateful, and make sure that nothing like that ever happens again. I'm just sayin'...

  • I love Stephen Fry, such a kind and wellspoken human being, but I did find it a bit peculiar that he seemed to have no knowledge about the Nürnberg-laws......stating that his great grandparents lived a perfectly normal life until 1942.......well, I´m sorry but I don´t think so, Stephen

  • @trygveden I think it's not that he didn't have any knowledge about the laws, but that his grandparents sudden move surprised him. Obviously he had known since he was young that his grandparents were murdered as his mother told him, but he knew very little of where they lived or how, that's why it hit him very hard because it was all that more personal. These were his grandparents.

  • @trygveden It was normal for the time and place, not for OUR time and place.

  • Aww he had me crying because of the plaque!

  • Seeing Stephen Fry cry is unbearable!! Someone hug him!!

  • I'm from Austria (about 30km south of Vienna) and my Mother's maiden name is Braun. So am I maybe related with Stephen Fry? :)

  • @blenderpanzi ,Ich glaube es gibt in Österreich ziemlich viele Leute die Braun heissen.gg

  • @IstalkBananas Und sie sind alle verwandt!!11!!11!einself

  • "it's a cliché but a gorgeous one. "

  • sorry that one person that disliked it might of been me, it wasn't deliberated, my hand betrayed my mind and I clicked a few movements below the like button. I normally wouldn't be arsed explaining myself on a you tube video but I have such respect and love for Stephen Fry that I couldn't let it go unsaid.... sorry.

  • I love the Jews because they blend so perfectly into our society without special demands and have contributed to society at every level. Steven is a perfect example of this. You couldn`t get more English. God Bless those that never escaped the Nazis murderous clutches.

  • @LIVERLADD This might sound like an attack, but I assure you I don't mean it that way. Merely an observation of cultural differences. Anyway:

In America (or at least liberal America), immigrants are often lauded for what culture they add rather than how well they assimilate ours. That whole melting pot thing... we certainly love an immigrant who speaks great English, but beyond that we almost want them to be as different as they can be so as to expand our already vibrant culture!

  • @ErdTirdMans Though perhaps I'm only speaking for myself here :)

  • @ErdTirdMans If you are a follower of democratic and liberal principles, watch Fox News for how the other side feels. It is truly damning that it is now the most popular "news" network in the US.

  • Those Jewish boys really do speak amazing english.

    It blew me away.

  • @Kafeifei why wouldnt they? english is taught in austria, too Oo

  • @2AgentSmith2 English taught doesn't mean good English. I know plenty of Austrians who speak lacklustre English.

  • @Kafeifei okay if you say so, idk, i dont live there.

  • NEVER forget what humanity can be capable of if they are given the mandate. "The only thing that it takes for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing.."

    Thank you for posting.

  • @wuduaelvin No. I believe there is no good nor evil but people who take a single principle above all others.

  • @mercedescl The evil is implied by the actions commited by those who 'take a single principle above all others'. They believe in that principle without regard or consideration of anything or anyone and therefore by definition they are evil.

  • How very English of him to apologize for crying. :)

  • @Concetta20

    Quite

  • so who else thought the dramatic opening of the brief case was going to be the end of Stephen Fry's life?

  • @selm haha, I read your comment and the begining of the video and didn't understand what your meant, but when I got to that part I loled. I totally thought that too! :0

  • WATCH OUT FOR THAT HOODIE STEPHEN, HE'LL STAB YOU UP! :P

  • Thank you so much for posting this episode, it is my favourite programme but somehow I missed this one. Stephen is one of life's gentlemen and I loved seeing his astonishment at his working class ancestors!! We share some roots there Stephen, nothing to be ashamed of, salt of the earth people but life was hard in those days.I hated to see him so upset, but that compassionate woman should be given a medal!!! I wish you happiness in you're life dear man,

  • There are some people who are just detemined to hurt one another and then there are some, clearly not enough, like that wonderful woman who helped create the plaque, who are selfless, benevolent beings.

That is the one and only time I ever want to see Stephen Fry cry but I'm guessing its not enough for this programme.

  • What in God's name made him do that, why 5:55? Tears just projected and sprayed out of my eyes, I didn't think it would hit me like that.

  • @TheLilacglows you mean the guard with the elderly lady?? Just to make her look at the camera while they were filming her, as in "look at the camera you bitch". It was a wonderful time for humanity....(deep disgusted sarcasm)

  • @TheLilacglows I had the same experience you did.

  • oh look slovakia...how shit it is :D

  • @MilitantOldLady everyone good got out in 68-69

  • Gah... all these eps of Who Do You think You Are with stories of ancestors being sent to the camps and killed are just heartbreaking. This is the 3rd one I've seen like this.

  • This is the reason we fought the war, to avenge the fate of people like Stephen's great grandparents.

  • @debzeppeliniv It became a reason why. At first, it was because Hitler had invaded Poland. Unitl the Russians began liberating camps, we had no idea of the horrors that the Nazis were commiting.

  • Aww stephen.

  • So cute when he was talking to those kids!x

...then at the plaque with his great granparents names after he talked to the woman and cried....I just wanted to give him a hug ar something lolx

  • Thank you for this post!

  • Aww, I wanted to give him a big hug when he was crying at the plaque!!

  • @IrishEyes1989 he is awesome, isn't he?

  • Thanks macolleague for sharing, unfortunately I did not follow the series, but I have seen this clip before, and like I said to you - "Empathy" it oozes out of the man - You can tell he was deeply moved and not afraid to show it. Great Post.
