Shanice has a voice that can change in tone to match whatever song she's singing. This song was done way back in 1997, Every Woman Dreams came out in 2006 and thankfully she is currently working a new album.

They both did their thing with this song, and we should appreciate both versions. A good song is like a well crafted poem AND THIS IS NO EXCEPTION! If you read the lyrics carefully you will see that 'How could your love be leaving me'' is not an intention on her lover's part but a FEAR which stems from her past life revealed at the start, 'And I can't stop thinking about the way THINGS USED TO BE''...
But that fear has to be based on something and the fact that she keeps speaking as if he's going to leave suggests that she has good reason to be afraid. She may have been hurt in the past, but this new love should've erased that hurt and the fact that she's saying she'll die if he leaves means that this love is much stronger than the last one and therefore her fear more potent. She wouldn't get that despondent over the thought of him leaving unless she knew he was going to do it.
That fear is based on the fact that this new love has become the APPLE of her eye, the CENTER of her life. So when she compares Then and Now she is bound to fear as she doesn't want to go back to her former state. Another clue to this is how she begin the first verse about her past - ''The way things USED TO BE'' compares to the second verse - ''The way my life WOULD BE.''
So the fear is based off the fact that this love is so great that she's compelled to express her gratitude to him.

BUT what she is getting now IS ENOUGH to tell her that this is where she wants to be. As such she expresses her feelings of love. When someone has gone through years of hurts and pains when they found new love it's natural for them to go through a period of fear; Will it last? Will it turn out like before? Will he leave me? Especially if there is self-blame.
She also speaks in the past tense. "I can't stop thinking about the way things USED TO BE, I can't stop thinking about the love that you MADE to me," so that, coupled with the other verses, means that their relationship is in danger of ending and that means her lover is going to leave and she's begging him to stay.
USED TO BE tells about her previous state - Maybe she was lonely or in a bad relationship BECAUSE right after, she goes straight into the present tense, ''Can't stop thinkin about the love that you MAKE to me. If it was a continuation, she would've said MADE. So obviously her lover hasn't left and probably HASN'T shown any sign, if that was the case the chorus would read differently rather than saying 'IF I never' she would be saying 'SINCE I'll never'. So she ain't begging she's just revealing.
The chorus doesn't have to read differently. If her lover is thinking of leaving, then her saying IF I would be appropriate if she's speaking directly to him which she seems to be doing in an attempt to convince him to stay.

You need to show me where he has expressed that plan to leave, which you can't.

@Seetdeh Yes, Shanice is amazing, it's a pity that this version is too short. But Toni in her days would take a song from Shanice and do her way, which tends to be magic too. Magic isn't only about range, it's about vocal technique. It's not worth to have the best range if you sing like Jessica Simpson, for example. Toni is smart about picking right songs and her voice is recognized by everyone who hears her.
I did not say range is what makes a song magical. Toni is a wonderful songstress with a distinct alto, but if the song is weak there is not much she can do to pull it off. Her best years were with Laface and that team of production worker brought out the best from her. I am also aware of Alexandra, but I do not quite like her version of Without You as it was too overpowering. I would've preferred if she had done it like Mimi who starts sincere and build gradually.

Toni's last album was the bomb and she sang live, not the same way of the album and with some pitch problems, but it was still cool. Shanice rarely goes through pitch problems, however she doesn't pick the best songs, but it's always good to hear her voice. I like both, but I think Toni Braxton has obviously more personality than Shanice.

When I'm able to listen to Shanice entire album without skipping, I find myself doing so with Toni's. @Seetdeh Yes, I heard, and her vocals really lift her songs up. But at the same time I feel the songs aren't the best songs. Shanice needs to renew her repertoire. Not really a drammatic change to make it sound like Rihanna or Beyoncé. But I loved "The promise" by Deborah Cox and Toni' last album, for example. Shanice's lyrics have been too cheesy, too soft. I think she needs to put some dramma in her lyrics and vocals. She can be perfect in another ways.

Lots of people can tell this in our daily lives. But it's sweeter to tell for example, "you are the apple of my eye". Another example of smart lyrics are Tamia's "Me" and "Stranger in my house". I miss some electronic approach on her background too. Sade and Deborah Cox did it. It can become poppier and elegant as well.
All these songs and singers named are lovely, one thing however, for Shanice to be a victim of cheesy lyrics and still able to be a hot contender even when out of sight, speaks to her strength as an artiste.
I really do not wish for Shanice music to sound like Rhianna or Beyonce because from where I sit their music are not long lasting. Shanice has a special and amazing voice with too much colour to be singing Rhianna-like songs. See how Shanice admires Toni and sings her Un-break my heart, it totally means that Toni's magic influences Shanice.

It gets boring quickly, I do however love that song: 'I love your smile' by her. Those types of songs fit her voice. I prefer Toni Braxton who has a more distinctive voice over her. I also prefer Chante Moore over Shanice's voice. There is a reason that Toni B. is an icon and Shanice isn't. A great artist isn't all about singing perfectly.

The FACT is Toni did not convey the meaning of the song and whether her voice is more distinct is irrelevant. The lyrics also say, "how could your love be leaving me?" which suggests that if her loved hasn't left yet, he's certainly thinking about it or is about to do it and she's pleading with him to stay, so YES, it would make sense to be sad if you think or you know that your lover is going to leave you, so no, Shanice DIDN'T give an emotionally authentic interpretation while Toni nailed it spot on.

But that fear has to be based on something and the fact that she keeps speaking as if he's going to leave suggests that she has good reason to be afraid. She may have been hurt in the past, but this new love should've erased that hurt and the fact that she's saying she'll die if he leaves means that this love is much stronger than the last one and therefore her fear more potent. She wouldn't get that despondent over the thought of him leaving unless she knew he was going to do it.

If it was a continuation, she would've said MADE. For your info Shanice is a better singer than Toni. Don't hate because Shanice can take on Toni and create magic while I doubt Toni can do the same with a Shanice. At the end of the day Babyface is the writer and producer and he also arranged this version for Shanice and from his expression he is satisfied, so shut the crap and respect true artistry!

@Seetdeh Yes, Shanice is amazing, it's a pity that this version is too short. But Toni in her days would take a song from Shanice and do her way, which tends to be magic too. Magic isn't only about range, it's about vocal technique. It's not worth to have the best range if you sing like Jessica Simpson, for example. Toni is smart about picking right songs and her voice is recognized by everyone who hears her.

I did not say range is what makes a song magical. Toni is a wonderful songstress with a distinct alto, but if the song is weak there is not much she can do to pull it off. Her best years were with Laface and that team of production worker brought out the best from her. I am also aware of Alexandra, but I do not quite like her version of Without You as it was too overpowering. I would've preferred if she had done it like Mimi who starts sincere and build gradually.

@Seetdeh I don't mean to make an inflammatory comment now. But I think Shanice lacks the ability to choose the right songs, which doesn't happen with Toni. Toni's last album was the bomb and she sang live, not the same way of the album and with some pitch problems, but it was still cool. Shanice rarely goes through pitch problems, however she doesn't pick the best songs, but it's always good to hear her voice. I like both, but I think Toni Braxton has obviously more personality than Shanice.

No need to hold back on your error, it's all yours. But you need to realise that singing is more than picking the 'right' songs. When I'm able to listen to Shanice entire album without skipping, I find myself doing so with Toni's. I sensed you are looking at the fact that Toni has more hit songs, but you must take into consideration that Laface did a great marketing, unlike what they did for Shanice. Do you own Shanice 2006 album? What do you mean by 'more personality'?

@Seetdeh Yes, I heard, and her vocals really lift her songs up. But at the same time I feel the songs aren't the best songs. Shanice needs to renew her repertoire. Not really a drammatic change to make it sound like Rihanna or Beyoncé. But I loved "The promise" by Deborah Cox and Toni' last album, for example. Shanice's lyrics have been too cheesy, too soft. I think she needs to put some dramma in her lyrics and vocals. She can be perfect in another ways.

Lots of people can tell this in our daily lives. But it's sweeter to tell for example, "you are the apple of my eye". Another example of smart lyrics are Tamia's "Me" and "Stranger in my house". I miss some electronic approach on her background too. Sade and Deborah Cox did it. It can become poppier and elegant as well.

I really do not wish for Shanice music to sound like Rhianna or Beyonce because from where I sit their music are not long lasting. Shanice has a special and amazing voice with too much colour to be singing Rhianna-like songs. You said Shanice lyrics are poor in quality, do you mind naming some of those songs so that I can see exactly where you are coming from? I do believe I asked if you won Shanice 2006 album? I doubt it and her 1999 album is a solid album, no dry spots.

Have you not seen the genre of music Shanice has done? Toni is all bitter-sweet love and sultriness, Shanice is all that and more. Some of us seem to have forgot that Shanice was very popular back in the 90s until she went on hiatus. I have not yet bought Toni's last album but so far what I heard sounded great. Shanice likewise doesn't sing the song as on her album... Toni is breathtaking but Shanice is simply amazing.

@Seetdeh See Alexandra Burke singing Without you. She's a british alto and she delivered it really well with her own range. I know it's a matter of taste, but it's good not to be blinded by other talented voices. It's a total prejudice to expect an alto to sing a soprano reaching the same notes and if not doing so, it was not so good. See how Shanice admires Toni and sings her Un-break my heart, it totally means that Toni's magic influences Shanice.

Shanice loves Toni and rightfully so, but you somehow got the impression that I expect alto to sing soprano. When I said that Shanice is a better singer, I was speaking to her ability to pull off multiple vocal features. Toni's voice connects well singing heartbreak songs, but Shanice is able to sing those as well as high-spirited songs. I do hope you get what I'm saying here.
