You used way too much gain, especially for Ride the Lightning. And at that time they didnt use mesas, such as you used (cali plate diamond are the podfarm "mesas"), they used jcm 800 that were boosted, but even that sound in podfarm doesnt give justice to a real tube amp.

although im a huge fan of podfarm, that is. great sound for very less money

@rockstar0815 One thing that makes the sound of my UX2 just awesome is doing what studio engineers call the "sound wall" technique: record the rhythm guitar twice and pan each track fully to each side. It doesn't work so well if you duplicate the track: you really gotta record it twice! It's not much of a trouble though, and it makes the sound reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally awesome. My distortions sound exactly like yours when isolated, but when i do the sound wall they get really metal-y and stuff.

if you can get the Metallica sound with your amp, and you really want to capture that, you should mic your amp with a sure 57. just don't crank it, this should workout good for you you could also try a zoom g71ut processor. they have a USB. good luck.

good, but the screamer will soften the bass and the tone as a whole, the bass should feel like its being pushed and pounding, ok tone, it just needs LESS softness, so remove the tube screamer, as you know kirk used the screamer on when soloing.its good for soloing though

This setting tends to sound excellent for most black album era stuff:

noise gate-tube screamer-treadplate dual (cab=4x12 2001 treadplate 421 DYNAMIC mic@ 30%room)-compressor set at -10db thresh, 10db gain 4 band eq with big eq dip at midrange, sine chorus set very low on speed and depth/mix, just for the wetness, and do that dual, with a classic distortion on the second amp chain. tweek that, and you can get most of their albums sounds pretty easy.

Howcome you can't record with the plug in? I recently found quite a good way of using it. In the "mixer' tab you can set the dry output on a high lvl and the wet output on low, and then you stillh ave the sound from the stand alone, but while recording, the computer will only record the dry signal. Then you can use the plug in to edit the sound after recording!
