sorry folks.nature can be cruel. hyeanas are the only animals that eat there prey alive commmonly. african wild dogs kill there prey in a similar fashion but they are disemboling it that means they are rapidly tearing out its entrails. its not as horrible as it sounds death usually takes under 3 minutes depending on the size of the prey item.

I don't understand the hostility towards this video. It's not like he instigated the hyenas to eat the buffalo alive, or like they do at the zoo's in China people pay money to throw a live animal to be killed by tigers or lions that is cruel. This a natural moment he captured and put it on youtube. That is Hyenas natural behaviour in our eyes its cruel but in the hyenas minds there must be a logic that we cannot understand. Makes me wonder why the hyenas didn't kill the calf outright? Maybe because it's already down, idk. Impressive sighting, a sad end for the buffalo but a good meal for the Hyena, thats how nature works, some people think that meat grows on supermarket shelves and no animal was harmed in the process. Yes this little buffalo suffered whilst being eaten but it was for a short time, a slow death from whatever injury attracted the hyena to it would have been much worse.

I don't understand the hostility towards this video. It's not like he instigated the hyenas to eat the buffalo alive, or like they do at the zoo's in China people pay money to throw a live animal to be killed by tigers or lions that is cruel. This a natural moment he captured and put it on youtube. That is Hyenas natural behaviour in our eyes its cruel but in the hyenas minds there must be a logic that we cannot understand. Even lions have been recorded of eating their prey alive.

Phalanx47, your video shows that the calf didn't go into "shock" and you yourself said in the video that you could only "hope" that the calf would become numb to the pain. It is sad that animals have to suffer so.

Makes me wonder why the hyenas didn't kill the calf outright? Maybe because it's already down, idk. And I wonder what goes through a mother buffalo's mind when something like this happens, if she's acting on instinct when she stays near the baby or if she feels any grief. As a mom myself, this was kind of hard to watch - I know it's just nature, but still. :'-(

Nature in all its glory, is cruel. But that is how nature is, you take the beauty with the cruelty. at the end of the day, if the Hyenas, lions etc don't eat, they will die. It's a strange little circle of life but a true one.

In some ways i hate to agree, but the savageness of nature, appears cruel, at times like this having no emotion of any kind is very hard, but try and distance yourself from the emotional territory, this is nature's way.
Impossible to comprehend what the poor animal is going through, pain or otherwise, eventually it will pass away.
And shock possibly does play a role in lessoning the agony. Still very sad to see, RIP Little creature.

Impressive sighting, a sad end for the buffalo but a good meal for the Hyena, thats how nature works, some people think that meat grows on supermarket shelves and no animal was harmed in the process. Yes this little buffalo suffered whilst being eaten but it was for a short time, a slow death from whatever injury attracted the hyena to it would have been much worse.

@rachel3972 Yes it's disturbing, very sick and its in bad taste to joke abt it as if it's a fun thing. We are brought into this world with sad realities like this. This is how the world works, it goes on and on and on like a circle, even human are subjected to these kind of circle, we are infect by virus, bacterium, worms who make a meal out of us or eaten by animals if out in the wild.

It's so refreshing to hear some sensible comments regards my video, instead of all the sniping about music & the bad jokes. Nature can appear cruel in our eyes, but as i have said before, Animals go into shock after a few minutes, & do not feel the pain we associate with the suffering we are looking at. And mykegoh is so right , it is a circle of life, & mother nature dose it so well, seeing that as many of her creatures benifit from anothers demise, keeping suffering to a minimum.

@PHALANX47 Yes, I understand that this is 'nature' in operation. E.g. When I hear people refer to violent thugs as "animals" I despair, because animals attack and kill for food or as a defence mechanism, both of which serve the sole purpose of maximising their chances of survival; not - as is the case for humans - for fun and/or sport etc. However, I still find this video and comments upsetting because I don't like to see cruelty regardless of how/why it is happening. That was merely my point.

@PHALANX47 I agree to a certain point: Bullfighters (That's another story I know about abuse...) claim that bulls also stop feeling pain when they are near death. Why is it that they often cry in pain if they are not feeling a thing?
Of course, this is nature, this had nothing to do with you, and it's not necessarily about bad taste cause this things happen and animals must eat.

@rachel3972 no i find animals tearing other animals apart distressing ...and people who find it entertaining or funny have very serious issues..nature intended animals to hunt in order to survive which at times is both brutal and very cruel...we can only hope that the prey has a quick and merciful death,,nature is barbaric in the animal kingdom only the strong survive in the story of the hunter and the hunted, its not entertainment its life in the cruellest form,,

The mother things that the cameramen are on the side of the hyenas...that is why she was looking towards the camera and hesitating....if those cameramen were not there that calf would likely have been rescued in time. That is interfering with nature ignorantly.
