All that said, I'd give him a 8.75 over all, and a 9.5 for effort. And yes, that one note does take a toll on the male voice. Ouch.

I thought so too but that's how it's supposed to end. People have grown so accustomed to 'traditional' endings that they expect to hear them when a certain note signals a certain traditional ending. Some writers on Broadway have an obsession with making endings different from the 'normal'. Making a last note suddenly loud or making a note sharper are some of the weird things people do. It sounds a little odd but when you listen to it again, you can appreciate it for its originality.
