Hitler invaded the Soviet Union to create a self sufficient European economic unit under German domination. With this, the Royal Navy blockade of Europe, which turned the military successes in the west into an economic burden, would be nullified. @1Mehring1 Erm this documentary does not delve deep into politics, its main focus is war tactics. So they say only partial things about politics or else every serie would be many hours long. They have to narrow down each even in these series to 40-45 minutes so they cannot explain every policy and politics, they dont focus on West, this docu is about East. Plus the english translation is diffrent if you watch the original Russian documentary of this, called Great War series.
@normison69 A short explanation is one thing, a wrong explanation is quite another. I didn't even comment on the military inacuracies I noticed as I find them of little interest these days, boys stuff.
@1Mehring1 Military inacurcies or Western point of view about Eastern front? I think Russians know better about their own tactics, they have debunked many Soviet "propaganda" and this documentary is most accurate about war in the Eastern front yet to see yet. You should also watch the original series, with english subs. They have cut alot of stuff in these English versions and changed the script to fit more "western". Only thing not told is the traitor Generals who grounded the planes b4 invas.
@normison69 What myths is the series debunking? I saw the 'Typhoon' edition yesterday and didn't notice any myths being debunked at all.
If that's how it's billed, this new explanation for the invasion becomes pernicious. Russians have an interest in creating and maintaining myth just as the west did and still does.
History is usually fable agreed upon and few histories look into the interests through which the history we are fed is distorted.
@1Mehring1 I meant overall, not only these series, if this was Soviet documentary they would not mention many things. But yes i agree, history is distorted because it comes only mostly from war paper documetns and veterans, memory fades and papers can be altered towards more "better" results. But sitll this is most accurate documentary series about the eastern front. Non biased even towards Germans, the thing is that Russians are still proud about their feat, you dont understand the Russian soul

@1Mehring1 My meaning of Russian soul was no racist remark in any way and i did not mean like "SOUL" literally, but rather like the Russians love their motherland above all and are very proud people about their country and its rich cultural history even though it had some dark times during communist era. Its same spirit every countryman has for its own country but its also diffrent for every country. Russians also hate their coutnry but will fight to the death for it. You dont understand...

@1Mehring1 Most thing that i love about this documentaries is that it does not touch the thousand times told subjects of Nazi and Red Army war crimes and overall death camps and stuff. It just simply focuses on WAR and TACTICS and MEN and GENERALS and EQUIPMENT like, planes, tanks and guns. There is plenty around about war crimes and atrocities, but i like that these series skip it because there is plenty enough of them. But i think still Russians know their history better than west tacticswise
