Hey Kyle not to sound like a prick but your gear needs some update bud..i live on the mississippi river and we catch big blue cats and our gear can pull in small buses..check out renegadetackle. they have excellent big gear for realy good prices.I use MING-Yang reels and shakespear tiger rods,TWC rods r kick ass TANGLING WITH CATFISH also WarRods from renegade are awsome...

I do let the drag loose and let them run with it but I tend to not have the waiting game. I seem to get a hit within 5 minutes each and every time.

Dude kick ass video. Down here in Lake Darbonne Louisiana Farmerville that is.... below the spill way there are tons of bad ass alligator gar. I mean TONS. Hard as hell to catch. But it's a thrill! But dude. I guess I'm not waiting long enough before I set the hook. They tend to spit the hook out when I get them close to the bank. Thinking about using jugs and jugging the shit out of them. how I got a alligator gar fishing for walleye. At first I was like O $hit this is a huge walleye. Took me somewhere between 30-45 min. another good, and fun way to catch the perch, is fly fishing. by some strike indicators, and size 14 bead head nymphs. Anything with green will work.

what about circle hooks? think they will be good, especially because they are designed to "set themselves" so when the gar runs with it, perhaps get a clean hookset in the corner of its mouth?

Great video. Also about gar: even though they got all those sharp teeth, gar swallow thier food whole. They use thier teeth to hold on to and check out the food source. You will see them pick up and drop the bait several times before they swallow it whole. Once they take it, they will tend to run with it, that's when you set the hook. It does not hurt to set the hook more than once because your setting it into bone. Once you set the hook, let them run with it.

The way I. Actually caught the Gar was I would cast out about a 100 yards, leav the line slacked and once the line got tight, I would set the hook. BAM!!! Gott 'em every time.

Greetings Mr. Kyle. The way I used to catch Gar, was first. I use a Level wind reel (perferably a Shimano Calcutta 700. Great power!) and as you stated, 85lb. Thread, a 4oz. Led, an 11/O worm hook by "Owner" (I have found no better hook...no joke), and a 15' grahite

@bassbeast117 You can but it might lead to killing the fish. If your spending the day gator gar plan on having plenty of extra steel leaders and hooks.

PS - DONT EVER USE THE PRE MADE STEEL LEADERS YOU BY AT THE STORE! They always break, Even on little gar. Make your own steel leaders you can order the kit online at bass pro shop for less then $ 15 thats the complete set. use 80 /100 leader for the big gar. Stay away from circle hooks and get something like i showed in the video.

@bassbeast117 That would be a blast to catch one on a fly rod!! Yeah on the smaller gar hook up percentage is really good. Just like you said you can watch them hit in and and wait till they swim away from and set it and almost every time you got one.

Those monster gar that look like torpedos are are a whole different story.. i wish it wasnt!!

@MultiGrateful Take a live blue gill, Cut his tail fin off without cutting his body ( stick to just cutting the fin ) then take a knife and barley cut the side of his body just deeper then the scales. then hook him in the back with a cork and let it sit till it dies or you catch something. Or fresh caught blue heads work good too And can also catch catfish. sucker fish work good too. Smaller gar will hit anything.

I noticed the needle/ long nose gar at 0:08 in the video but at 4:24 that still pic was a aligator gar, really common and pretty freakin huge down here on the border of texas and Oklahomas in the red river, Last one i saw live was 240lbs and have seen pics of 300 plus.

@jdub52687 The key thing thing is letting them run with it before trying to set the hook, Depending on the size of the gar pick a good size hook and let him have plenty of time to run with it.
