Even non-immigrants can relate. Most people in big cities are dirt poor and work night jobs so their kids can have the best. <3333 This is the best search story ever!
This is so moving. My mom was an immigrant from Vietnam and she can be hard on me sometimes, and I'll get mad at her, but this video makes me remember that she only wants the best for me and to allow me to have a better life. :')
This is so true and touching... Any person from a immigrant family knows how many hardships they parents must go through in order to give them the best.... When she typed "part time jobs night ny"... It made me cry so hard...
If you ever think about it being a first generation asian american and the sacrifices your parents/mom made....it's such a unique and amazing commonality we all have. It's truly a blessing.

@shippensbia If your parents didn't risk their lives and well being to move to a different country, and worked tediously for a better future for their sons and daughters, I don't blame you.
@shippensbia It's hard to explain the mental and emotional turmoil from leaving your country and moving to a place that doesn't appreciate your qualities. It's belittling and a lot of people can't handle it..
wow this really made me cry... my parents immigrated to the US too, and they knew very little english and this ad makes me appreciate their hard work so much, and compels me to work harder myself in school.
This is absolutely without a doubt one of the most, inspiring, touching, mesmerizing and creative ads I have ever seen in my life.
Google should be very proud to produce such a work of beauty.
This ad inspires me to want to achieve great things because I like many others came to this country as an immigrant, and as this ad details; its the hardest thing in the world to successfully accommodate.
This is my story, moved to north America. My parents worked hard to enroll me in best high school around and guess who was the valedictorian? Me. My heart cried.
@HalaHadean23 it's the best public high school in New York (and one of the best in the nation) to my knowledge...NY has a ton of really good private schools tho
@MadeAccount and the fact that hard working also runs in the family and they learn to make most of what they have because they're poor. And they can't pay for stupid distractions like xbox's, playstations, ipods, whatever and he'd strive to work hard to provide money for his family. Unless some pathetic lazy people I know...
@m2mfan4eva You spelled Unlike wrong :). Also things like TV and Computer aren't necessarily distractions, as they can also help you with education etc.
@MadeAccount Also, out of all the people I know, not many at all use tv and computer primarily for education. I mean, I do use the computer for typing in word and googling things for assignments, but I also mostly use it for fun and entertainment. Moreso fun and entertainment.
I got the video on the day I received my M.B.A result and this reminds me contribution of my mommy and my dad behind my graduation... Like this my parents also moved one city to an other city only for my better future and they sacrificed a lots to finance my education...... I m really proud of my parents and thanks Google.....
@huangavin, Stuy's modus operandi is pure meritocracy (which is probably why Google loves it and I bet a bunch of Google engineers are Stuy grads), it would surprise me if they were not meritocratic in selecting valedictorian and salutatorian, notice how it's majority Asian and that majority is increasing?
When I was there I recall reading that valedictorian and salutatorian selection was on the basis of straight GPA and then AP classes to break ties.
@CJS925 - It is not specified in the clip how the parent got here, but we can agree on one thing. Most would have arrived by boat, for months without food or basic essentials. In some cases, these poor souls have been robbed by pirates. They escape to find a better place for not them, but for their children. They escape what used to be the war, and perhaps these days communism. When they arrive, they have nothing, but just a belief of a better life, future. They work several jobs to provide.....
@CJS925 ....the basics, like shelter (rent), clothing, food, medical and education for their children. They put immense pressure on their children to excel academically so they can get into the courses they want when they reach university (or college), all so that they can have an easier life than theirs (the parents). How do I know all this? I am one of those children, who was born to migrant parents, now living in Australia. They still work hard to this day, and I dont thank them enough.
Im so envious, i wish I had parents that took into thought about my interest and weren't so ignorant. Seems like all they want to do is have me become "successful" and make money D:
Contrary to popular belief, this year's Stuyvesant valedictorian was a third-generation upper-middle class Jewish-American from the Upper East Side, a far cry from the story this video portrays. Once again, money and establishment trumps hard work and perseverance.
As someone who went to Bronx Science, I gotta say at the moment, Stuyvesant is the best skool in tha city. That's not to say we won't pass them in the future, but being number one isn't easy and I wouldn't want to deny them that.
