That was one of the best moments in sports, when the flames came over. Old rivalry that Linden was very much apart of and showing that kind of respect. Only in Hockey.
I'm not sure how anyone can dislike this. As a Canucks fan, all I can say is Linden, thanks for all the memories. It was an honor to have you play for our team.
I was there too, I was teary also. Posted some short vids from where I was sitting behind Kipper at the start & end of the 3rd period, got Linden's start of 3rd period ovation on video, that was wild!
First off i'm a flames fan. But watching this guy play hockey was phenominal, he did everything a classy and ideal hockey player. Truly the greats of the 90s are slowly diminishing, it's sad to see them all retire. Also Kudos to Canucks fans at this game to cheer for Jarome Iginla after getting 2nd star and its awesome they gave Linden 1st star, wouldn't have it any other way.
I hate the flames so much.. but have such respect for Iginla and them for commin out and doin this.. how can ya not get emotional from sumthin like this if you have grown up watching trevor and the Canucks.. all i can think of is seein him nearly in tears after game 7 vs the Rangers.. best Captian in team history and a classy guy in general..
I think some people here are missing the point. This isn't about the politics of Calgary/Vancouver, and it's not about which hockey team is better. It was the opposite. They're put the rivalry away to acknowledge the great career of Trevor Linden. It was a classy move by Iginla, the Flames, and the people of Vancouver showing that hockey is full of remarkable people.
This is why I love hockey...hate to see players go. I just can't imagine or stomach the night I see Brodeur go. I've been a fan since of the Devils since 1994 when i was first introduced to hockey and when I saw the devils and wings play in 95 i fell in love with the devils, brodeur and most of all the sport. ive seen trevor play when he was with the isles for a short time. great great player and a true legend in vancouver not to mention my ultimate respect for Iginla
I cried then and I'm crying now. I just can't believe we will never see him play again :(. I'm so glad I have a ticket to see him retire his jersey. It truly will be a memorable night . . . ha, I really want to be hopeful, but I don't think the same will be true for the game that's going to be played :P Thank you for all of the wonderful memories Trevor. Words can not express how much you will be missed.
P.S. If you're worried about goals with a lineup like that, the guy damn near had a hat trick a couple of nights before he retired. He scored the game winning goal against Dallas...in a rare stint on the power play. Call me nostalgic for '94, but it's too bad our crap management couldn't get this guy a cup. Hopefully we can get him back as a coach when Vingeault calls it quits. In his prime, I'd take him over anybody short of Gretzky or Orr. Screw it, let him run for mayor.
Maybe I feel a certain sense of pride because while Crawford and some fans were trying to run Trevor off the team or stick him on a 4th line like a washed up veteran, I stuck with him. Give me a team full of 37 year old Trevor Lindens, one 37-year-old Mats Sundin and Bobby Lu and I'll give you the cup paraded down Robson Street in June. Talented players come and go, but Trevor was priceless. I felt vindicated when he scored to beat the Stars in '07. He is truly irreplaceable.
I will never look at the Flames the same way again. Sure, I'm going to root for Vancouver all the way, but respect is everything and with me, Jarome Iginla and his Flames have earned the right to be respected in this city.
Canuck fans are so fickle, for 2 years 90% of them were saying that Linden should retire, and here they are giving him a standing ovation. The guy carried the team to the finals in 94, has volunteered countless hours to charities in Vancouver and in my opinion is the greatest Canuck of all time. Thanks for the great memories #16
The career he's had, a lot of us watched him when we were younger, and the runs he's had when he first broke in. He's played for so long, and also playing against him, he's a guy that plays hard all the time. He's a leader. He's a guy that's a good, honest, hard player to play against. He's not cheap. We have a lot of respect also for what he's done for us off the ice as a group of players. I'm not sure if it's his last for sure, but if it is, it definitely was an honor to play with him.
Great post. Thanks!!! I've been a hockey and a Ranger fan since 1980. Still, I must honor what Trevor has done with the Canucks and the PA. Good luck, Trevor!!!
I seriously miss Linden alot I mean poor guy had 2 retire but I luv Linden+The nucks I am just crying.I wllseriously miss Linden 4ever cuz hes shown + given alot of respect throout his career+I hope he comes back2coach or something later on.& I relly likeIgilna. is da BEST player on + off ice I mean look @ his sportsmanship and everything so great. Linden gave respect 2 everyone + Igilna actually apreciated + it showed it as well!!
Guys, dont get me wrong but i am a huge flames fan and i hate the canucks, but dont post on this video that this was a classy move by the flames and dont acknowledge linden. Yea it was a classy move by iggy but what captain wouldnt make their guys say goodbye to one of the games greats.and yeah its true and nobody better say crosby, but Iggys the best in the game.
I hate the vancouver luongos but i love linden and the game needs more pure gritty sportsmanlike players like him
You know what, I used to love the canucks just like all canadian teams. Until I lived in your city. I will admit Vancouver is probably one of the nicest places to see in the world but the people certainly dont match that. Its just one of those places where you either adapt to the arrogance or you get out and thank god I did. I believe that most of the hatred towards Vancouver is very justified. And by the way, Your heart and soul of the team was an Albertan.
Ya I kinda know what you mean. I lived out there for a couple years in 04 and 05. Great place to live and I'd totally move back, but there's a certain arrogance. They really think its the greatest city in the world, even commercials on TV there tell you this. It's funny too, because Ive never seen so much hatred for Toronto as Vancouverites possess, yet theyre the exact same way. Although Calgarians can be the same way too, I think there's a certain arrogance in Calgary regarding other places.

Calgary needs to fucking wise up and trade Iginla to a CONTENDER because he sure ain't gonna win it there. And he deserves to win one.
