@larjanus .. thats the point about it. You remember the story, but with gaps. The way to tell this joke is that YOU fill in the gaps in order to keep it up to date. I'm quite sure that an "investment banker" or even "Sepp Blater" could work their way in there.
Funny as this is, he was getting on in years when it was performed and he missed out a few key lines.I have seen an older performance of 'Hats' where he got it word perfect, and it was side splitting.Does anyone have an earlier version of this classic Cooper routine?
Tommy Cooper was one of those legends, along with Freddie Starr, of course, who had multiple talents to earn him his 'legend' status, the way he could make people laugh and be amazed at the same time with his jokes and magic tricks was outstanding
@Teabhagdad The funny part is he actually is a great magician, he can actually do all these tricks and more and be great, but that was dull, so he spiced it up by pretending to be incompetant. @)
What a one-off comic genius. Remarkably, a few posters just dont GET him. His schtick was to appear to be a bumbling idiot whereas in reality he had a million bizarre comic ideas and was a brilliant magician, card sharp and sleight of hand performer. He was a valued member of the Magic Circle Club comprising only the very best British magicians.
Not all of his material was "part of the act", don`t get me wrong I love Tommy Cooper, but he was notorious for coming on stage drunk,if you notice he slurs his words, and when he pauses to remember his lines, he had genuinley forgotten them! Brought on by Alcohol Dimensia, sad but true. Funny though non the less!
tommy is still a legend as everyone says he only had to walk on and everybody erupted in laughter theres few if any who can do that today rip tommy ,plus i was so lucky to of met the man happy days
such a legandary comedian!! wish i could have seen him live... such a terrible way he died... LMAO this skech has me weting myself EVERY time thanks for putting this on!!! x
I remember Tommy Cooper back in the early 1980s when it was on Channel 32 in Chicago (now part of the Fox network). I believe it was part of the weekday 'After Benny' hour (as in Benny Hill). Other comic actors included Cribbins, and Frankie Howard.
Watching tommy, or morcomb and wise, or listening to the goon show,.... It's just such innocent humour. You end up laughing like a child till your sides hurt.
Amusing, and oddly touching, but not hysterically funny. The sketch went on a little too long, and there were definitely moments when ol' Tommy was going through the motions with the hat-switching. Also, the story being told lacked any real interest in itself - in fact it was rather dull - and meandered to an abrupt and anti-climactic stop.
No doubt TC was a very funny man, but objectively this sketch doesn't stand up as either a comedic masterpiece or his best ever routine.
Differant Type Of Humour Mate. You Wouldnt Get It. Like Old Ronnie Corbett And The End Of The Two Ronnies. Just Sat there Telling A Story That Took For Ever And The Story Was Crap. But The Waay He Carried It Out Was Tremendous
Thanks, but I don't think you know me well enough to tell me what humour I "get" and "don't get".
I simply made an objective criticism of the piece based on the content and the performance - niether of which support the idea that this is Tommy's "best ever sketch".
Tommy Cooper was very funny, talented with a great sense of humour, it's not often in Britain that everyone likes a person with no dissenters or naysayers but in Tommy,s case it was.
A Comedian can have the worlds best authors to write sketches, jokes, etc,but what really matters, is to have a "funny bone". Your appearences alone makes people smile, laugh and having a good time.
Mr Tommy Cooper WAS Mr Funny Bone.
God protect you, if you do not find this man FUNNY!!!!!
"In rushed a Frenchman, a little schoolboy.... I dont know who that is"....... pure genius, granted due to his accent parts of what he says are difficult to understand but you cant fault TC for sheer entertainment value

I'm an Agnostic but you know when I watch these great Tommy Cooper videos I can easily believe beyond all doubt there's a God, because where else could such raw talent come from unless it was God given??, so all I can say is thank God for blessing us with the legendary Tommy Cooper, the best entertainer there ever was.
I was training with my team in Dublin on a thursday night when he was doing Pallidium, we showered and were in the bar waqtching him live.....................we were convinced it was an act when he went down clutching the curtain.............what a Legand
Only speaking figuratively really, as i say I'm an Agnostic, so the existence of God is something that I am neither convinced of or disbelieve in, I simply don't know but every so often in life characters come along that make me think there must be something and Tommy was one of them.
Gronwisgay Some guy made a comment about watching Tommy made him believe in God and i tried to point out that Tommy was just a funny man and not 'sent from God'
I believe Tommy Cooper understood peoples reactions and knew what things to do would make people laugh the most. He's not "raw talent" he's artistic and comedic genius.
I forgot to say (sorry) i love the trick he does with the martini bottels i was just amazed at it, i mean i know they probably just came up through the table but even so very good.

No! Stand up comedy's where it's at! Check Frankie Boyle and Billy Connolly, from Scotland, Lee Evans and Micheal MacIntyre, from England, and Dara O'Brien, from Ireland.
First saw him On PBS television here in New York in the 70's. I laughed like hell, my friends thought I was nuts. Some people dont get pure funny. RIP Tommy.

RIP Tommy.
