@WHKFTP actually he was only 16 when he took this wipeout, and he did not die surfing he drowned while free diving so if you actualy had an old VHS video of this session you would know that.
@WhitePony93 Bob Barbour took the 18 shot sequence with every shot in perfect focus and it appeared on an O'Niell poster. The ride has since been named "The Crucifixion". This (Monday morninig) started off an insane week at Mavericks with several magazine covers and the death of Mark Foo on friday. Really put Mavericks on the radar when it had been "unknown" just a few years earlier. Incedently, Eric Nelson / Powerlines Productions shot this video clip and you should give him credit.
@clarkewi Awesome...Thanks for the info....Correct me if I'm wrong but i believe this is the same issue where Jay says that he was working the night before and he knew of the buoy readings and couldn't wait to get there to "Mavs" the next day....16 yrs. old and looking to surf some serious water, wow.!!! Mavericks is definately a horse of a different color,But so was Jay...!!!
@WhitePony93 Was in Santa Barbara Sat. Sun. was small drove back north Sunday b4 noon. Gaviota, could see swell at Conception (rare). Stopped at Morro was massive. Surfed Big Sur River and lived. Stopped at "Lane" with a full moon risig it was giant. Onward through Pescadero as many "phantom cloud breaks" lit in full moon. Got to Pillar Point harbour late Sunday PM. Harbour patrol telling boats not to try to enter. Next AM - Jay. The rest is (recorded) history. Thanks Jay RIP, Bob and Eric!
Actually FenderGuy, he died in the Maldives in a diving accident. He was in the Maldives doing a summer photo shoot for OP Europe. He went for a dive around lunchtime and didn't return back. His friends went looking for him and found his body near his dive site about 15m below water.
R.i.p Jay..... This is footage taken from my father Chris Bystrom's film "Gravity Sucks" which is now available on DVD check out an extended version of this on my page.
Big wave surfing is scary enough you don't do it unless you think you can... Its just one of those things. Natural self preservation instincts kick in and stop the inadequate from stepping outside their ability, So you dont see to many deaths. But don think it its not dangerous. I have ridden some large surf and plan to ride as large as possible because the rush of it is like nothing else, like sky diving with skill.
ik poeple think well hes dead but the truth is not many poeple die from these sorta waves sure any old person wuld but these guys are trained and there is rarely a death maybe every 10years a big wave surfer dies from a big wave
Still the most impressive wipeout i have ever seen... Massive pair of sweaty back wheels not even taking in to account he was only 16... R.I.P Jay you fucking vandal.
A couple years ago as I was checking out some "wipeout" videos,I was surprised to see that Jays wipeout at Mavs was nowhere to be found...I remember when this wipeout was on the cover of Surfer Mag back in winter '94-'95...I've said it many times before, and I'll say it again, this IS the worst wipeout ever.!!!
RIP Jay...You will always be a legend. It is so ironic that you survived one of the most incredible wipeouts in surfing history, and still had your life cut so tragically short. You lived life to the fullest bro...more than what most people can ever say!!! I wish that I would have known you!
He drowned in 2001 in the Maldives whilst freediving. I'm not sure how it happened but i guess it was down to SWB (shallow water blackout) which is a pretty common cause of drowning in freediving.

16? he can barely even drive a car... let alone a 9 foot gun into a 35 foot wall of water!!
Jay, you had skill... but that DOES NOT MEAN other 16 year olds do!
Crazy, Jay survived this but didnt survive free diving:!??! Just goes to show you never know in mother nature or ocean! Take caution always.
Jay was a great longboarder too in small waves. Too bad....

Its the wind that makes things go wrong ..as the wave stands up the
10mph wind builds to 40 mph and holds you in the lip that fraction of
a second too long. With the spray its like getting hit
in the face by a fire hose. For paddle in big waves you need as heavy a board
as you can get and drive it forward at the point you would normally have
stopped paddling.
