hello linda fans,I am glad there is dialog on this song,it came out in march 71 as a 45,she was on tv plugging it,mike douglas,j cash, not sure of tonight or merv.I went to all the record stores, goodys, korvettes, macys,no one had it or the sheet music,I wrote capitol,no reply, what do you expect,it should have been on her last lp in 72,the different drum and retrospective 2lp set, wheb the capitol years came out I new it would not be there, must be legal problem with emmit rhodes&emi
This song was written by Emitt Rhodes a Fine solo artist from the 1970's. He wrote all his own songs and played all the instruments. Often called McCartneyesque or a one man Beatle. Before going solo he was a member of the group The Merry Go Round. Their big hit single called Live was also covered by The Bangles . A collection of his solo work can be found at Hip-o Select. I reccomend it to all who like Linda' s version or people who like the Beatles. If you Like music you will dig Emitt Rhodes.
You can download the original single from the internet...let me know if you need the link, or I can forward you a mp3 file of the original...I also converted the audio portion of this video to mp3 if you need that
Same here, was astounded when I learned it came out on a rerelease. God let us find it so we wouldn't go crazy before we go. And on youtube, too! how great!
OK, I actually OWN this single with an orange Capitol Records label. Anybody else....? Had it since 1969 or 70. I was hooked from the first time I heard Different Drum... high school... 1969....
First time seeing this and, obviously, I was just an infant at the time of this airing but it's real great to see this, wow, Linda has got a variety of repertoire, soul bordering on funk to rock to ballads. Wow!
This song was available on single with Ken Edwards' "The Long Way Home" on the B-side. Unfortunately, Capitol didn't see fit to include the song on the two cd set, "The Very Best of Linda Ronstadt," which collected her four solo albums for that label. You may be able to find a copy of the single through ebay or through GEMM, a service specializing in hard to find recordings.
... Hmm, and do you suppose Emitt Rhodes ever saw ANY royalties from this use of his song?
The music biz is so hypocritical: most IP laws advanced "to protect the artists" are really about gaining exclusive rights to *cheat* those artists. (Not dissing anyone in this video; I'm just really sick and tired of the general tendency ...!)
Emmitt would've received his royalties although probably not very much from Linda's recording as it wasn't that big of a hit. And considering the writing/publishing royalty was a measly two cents, split 50/50 between writer and publisher. Advances against royalties is a whole other mess. Gives the artist money to record and to help pay non-recording bills, which generally does have to be paid back. But it's not the advance that eats the artist's money; it's the money spent promoting the artist.
Yeah, I did take up alot of space here. But at least we have the freedom of getting a little carried away in our comments. No harm done. Can't say that for the *unofficial* Linda Ronstadt fan chat forum, where it appears Nazi music industry marketing reps, posing as fans, control discussion arbitrarily.
Sorry, meant to click on the "thumbs up" icon; its ok if the song gave you the willys; Remember, we CAN all speak our minds; that is, unless this current administration is still hell-bent on eroding yet another one our rights... Viva Linda!!!
Lovely. You Google my name and this is on first page. Those unbridled capitalist demons make sure to feature my worst posts. It wasn't my fault that I launched into another review of X,Y and Zee! Like Linda Ronstadt sings in 'Mad Love'--"I Can't help it!". Ha ha.
Sorry....Hadn't realized when starting posting here that there is no edit option. So below a bit of a mess. Just scroll down as far as possible to my first post and then read ensuing posts upwards. I wanted to edit the part referring to Susannah York (in film X, Y and Zee) as "A Very Lovely Woman" as I botched it below. Also, when referring to York and Elizabeth Taylor I'm of course referring to their film characters. That may not be clear. --Bruce Deile
I misused the term menage a trois in a post here yesterday. Thought it meant three people involved a love relationship, but apparently the definition is more specific to mean three people living together while being involved together sexually. That wouldn't quite apply to "X, Y and Zee" even though Elizabeth Taylor Susannah York became involved (as a means of Taylor hurting her).
OK...scroll down and start with my post that begins "This song gives me the willies." Read that post then read up all the other posts. Hard to post here witht he word limit...
Last part of wikipedia synopsis (had to break these up due to word limit):
Feeling bored and rejected, Zee attempts a number of methods to regain Robert's sympathy, such as committing suicide, but these do not work. Zee discovers that Stella had a lesbian affair in the past, and uses this against both her, and Robert, to dare him to partake in a love triangle with Stella.
Zee Blakely (Elizabeth Taylor) is a loud, coarse, forty-something socialite, whose marriage to her husband Robert (Michael Caine) is on the rocks, as witnessed by their frequent verbal sparring matches. Sick of Zee's antics, Robert is drawn to quiet boutique owner Stella (Susannah York) who is the complete antithesis to Zee in terms of personality.
A little more on that film (from wikipedia...but they left out that the character Susannah York plays--Stella--was kicked out of a monastery as a nun due to a lesbian relationship. Susannah York was "A Very Beutiful Woman" in this film. Yet Elizabeth Taylor had the best line when she compares her full figure to York's and says (paraphrasing): "But at least when he's with me in the dark he knows he's with a woman.")
This intense drama stars Elizabeth Taylor as a woman whose failed marriage causes her to wreak emotional havoc on those around her, especially when her husband takes a beautiful girl for a lover.
This song gives me the willies. Brings to mind "XY and Z", a film around that time starring Michael Caine, Susannah York, and Elizabeth Taylor. A vicious film about alcoholics in a menage a trois. Fun to watch though if not only to make you feel grateful you're not them. But I love Linda Ronstadt and although this song is creepy she's good like always.
thank you, smile67, for posting this great early video of Miss R...Linda should have been in the rock and roll hall of fame a long time ago; not taking anything from Madonna though...
years ago, long after its original release. Never knew Linda Ronstadt covered it until now, and I LOVE Linda Ronstadt! Can't even look at her without getting all weird inside.(stolen from Nilsson) Thanks for posting.
Wow, this was the first song I ever bought as a record when i was in 6th grade. The Merry Go Round, even over the Beatles. I loved this 45, and also the other hit "LIVE" by the band.
Never heard Linda sing this, but I dig linda too, her voice is one of the best ever of all female vocalists
It's 1970 or 1971, since she was just nominated for a grammy award, as Johnny Cash stated. Not being picky, just stating the logical conclusion, since none of her other work was nominated. "Long, Long Time" was the first of many more to follow!
Never heard this by Linda till now.... Impecable as always.I like it very much.I agree when Linda sings a song she owns it...it becomes hers.I love this woman so MUCH!!! Dont see how anyone doesnt love her.... I have a twin brother and he has Never liked Linda at all!!!! His Loss !!!!! I Love You Linda..Thank you for your Voice and your beauty!!!
NOPE its 1969, this is just after she left the Stone Poneys and went solo.
Just before she hit it big in 1974. Linda Ronstadt has had a long, and varied career over SEVERAL decades. Read her Wikipedia to see the chronology of this amazing womans career.
This sounds very Grace Slick/Jefferson Airplane to me. Let's face it, no other girls were singing rock during this period. Linda was such a rockin' mama! Gotta love her.
I had forgotten all about this one -- but how? It's so Spanish-influenced and beautiful. The Merry-Go-Round! Thank you! I've been wracking my brain trying to remember who did the original. I wonder where to find it?
This is the great "forgotten" single. It was Capitol's follow up to "Long Long Time" but it only charted as high as #70 on Billboard's chart in January of '71. I don't think this appeared on any of her LP's/CD's for whatever reason. The original Merry Go Round single was "You're a very lovely woman but they changed it to She's a very lovely...to put it in the 3rd person and not a love song to another woman.
Is that the country/rock group SWAMPWATER backing her up? I know they were her backing band around this time and before the Eagles. They made a couple of TV appearances with her too.
The Merry Go Round's "Time Will Show the Wiser" was also covered by Fairport Convention on their first album. They were very respected by "those in the know" and Emitt Rhodes was a great song writer. Too bad MGR didn't get the recognition they deserved by the public at large.
Great, however this is 1971, not 1969, go type in Linda ronstadt and swampwater
