@gear108head For one, it is not a strat, it is a knockoff called the 'starcaster'. And, another thing, it was my brother's. He has a strat now, though, so no need to worry about this 100 dollar piece of shit.
Its a magnavox stereo amp out of a console. The filter cap needs to be replaced. Thats why the resistor keep burning up. I have two of the amps I had to replace the filter caps on both of them .
@mike6l6 I rebuilt this with different tubes and a new cap. The resistor was burning up because i need something more like 20 watts, not 3 or whatever :P. Not too terribly sure that the new cap i put in it was good, but it was not as old. The old cap was dead short. The sockets and audio transformers are original.
What a messy shop but I like it... Change the 1k resistor to 3 watt... its probably 2. If they heat up they can often drift quite a bit. You might want to check the value on it out of circuit. Try to use wirewounds on load resistors too. post the schematic for me I'd like to see it.
block resistor who ampty capacitors are rated 330kohm-470kohm 3watt...and allways you must work with earth wires from everithing to one point on chassis ,and then you have low hummmmm oor none....cheers...
While we moved stuff in and out of my room to repair the house after the hurricane, someone knocked it over. And seeing that tubes are made out of thin glass, i could only expect them to shatter. Emphasis on shat.
if it's humming loud at idle - it likely needs a cap job - at that age 100% probable, if they are original (it looks like they are) filter caps and probably why the PS 1k resistor is frying. replace w/ a 5W ceramic wirewound. bad/dying caps stress the rectifier tube and transformer.
if you want guitar distortion, you're going to need at least one more gain stage - two would be best,
I replaced everything inside, almost. I use some old resistors, but none were from in here. The lytic did not leak horribly. After a few hours i only dropped a few volts. Maybe 20. Not great, but not enough to load the transformer.
6BQ5 has 12W plate diss. u run plate diss. @ 90% of max for class SE class A - your idle current and max power current DO NOT change. - as signal is amplified the Vtube changes - with signal applied the swing of the Vtube cannot be less than 0V nor can it be > B+ volts. rule of thumb, output power is about 40-45% pf Pdiss. hence the 4.3W output rating. unless you rewired the output stage, that amp is SE class A and not push-pull.
That's cool, you built an amp you can use for your guitar if you wanted. It's simple and to the point. even though vacuum tube tech has been phased out by current transistor technology, it's good to see someone working with that older tech.
Mmhmm :) Vacuum tube tesla coils and amps. But they are incredibly simple. I usually prefer semiconductors (omgpowersemiconductors) and stuff like that. Just depends if i am in a toob mood :P
why didn't you just keep the maggie amp stereo.

Replace that electrolytic can and that resistor will not blow in 10 minutes - or at all.:)

I like the way your strat is laying around on the floor.

for the resistor, use a wire wound. the go up to 30 watts

whats the big silver thing on the very left? i found some of those things the other day on the attic together with a bunch of burnt tubes XD

@fruhotchiliman this is an electrolytic capacitor used for filtering the DC current.

Also, the schematic was a bit different anyway.

4.5W per channel - single ended class A 6BQ5. looks like amp was pulled from magnavox console stereo.
you should put a load on both channels. tubes amps do not like to run without a load - the tube(s) can red-plate.
pmitchel60 2 years ago
Well, one channel had no connections. Just the filament. Also, this was 12w output audio tubes.

I'm Matthew btw if ya remember.

yes they can handle 135 volts and 12ma
it's made with a single tube,
i am searching for new transformer at the moment.
good luck with your tube amplifier :D

hey i made a tube amplifier too :D

only mine is simpler :P
