My source is a book called "By the Sword", by Richard Cohen, and there you can read that the blade from a broken sabre went through the fencing mask, THE EYEBALL, and into his brain (About 7 cm). He was alive until when the competitions were over, and after that they took away his life-support, because he was brain-dead.
the tip broke off, the blade punctured through the mask, went through his eye, and through his brain, he lived like 8 hours after it happend but they couldnt keep him alive.
How did I get here from My Little Pony?

Wekipedia says it didn't go through the actual eye ball, and he was on life support till the end of the competition.
