  • This is a very very very very helpful video!! Thanks!! :D

  • When I made the video 4 years ago all I was doing was making someone else's video tutorial (that I struggled with) easier to understand. I didn't create the process.

As for the audio compression use Audacity and configure the settings you need before you export it. All you need to do is drag the video into Audacity and it will strip the audio and you can play with the settings. Don't shorten the audio file in any way or the video will be out of sync when you render it and the sound later.

  • how'd you get a 750 to 8mb? I have a 3gb file and its huge still. also i cant get those audio compression rates

  • how'd you get a 750 to 8mb? I have a 3gb file and its huge still

  • Can you record ps3 gameplay with it?

  • i tried this.. but when i wanted to save it, it said allow compression only if you have registered camtasia studio ....

  • @JadetteWoW I've never heard of that happening before. I think I would ignore that and give it a try anyway. I never use my source file to test things...always use a copy. Although, if you "save as" anything in Windows the source file remains intact.

  • you compressed the video so much,

    but what about its quality?

  • @kaRanRoyaLjaNissaRy.....I'm an old man, I can't remember what I had for breakfast let alone the quality of a video I made 5 years ago. LOL But honestly I don't think I would have been impressed with Virtual Dub if the quality hadn't been passable. I checked you channel and I think maybe your standards are a lot higher with all the colors and movement etc. in what you are doing. Very impressive BTW

  • I downloaded the msu thing and installed it but it does not show up in the compression window, any help please?

  • @MUNCHDUDE ...I can olny say to follow the directions to the letter. Back then I was so new at this stuff, I would print the directions to almost everything and check off the steps as I went along.

  • thanks for the tutorial

  • @Webypedia ... Thank you very much.

  • thanks dude my file was like 200 megabites then it was 3 megabites i really appreciate your video

  • @Videogamefan100 When I made that tutorial I was working with a 1GB HD. To be able to reduce the size of a video that much was a godsend...my HD was filling up really fast. Funny thing is that when I got it, I couldn't imagine EVER filling up that much space.

  • Naggerts, What are you talking about? What "it" are you confused about?

  • "ehm how do I do it?" Yeah how do you actually do it?! Investigate that shit before you make such a rotten guide!

    Waste of time

  • Screen one shows what the core video is and screen two shows your changes.

  • how comes virtual dub have two screens

  • @Hi675445 Virtual Dub is a great editing tool and having the two screens really comes in handy. Or if you have to get right up to your monitor it can be one screen for each eye :-)

  • Thx alot!

  • @Twist996 You're welcome!

  • jeee tahkzzzz maan helped a lot.!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @shabin1889...I'm happy to have helped.

  • the codec cant be install. how was you?

  • when i click on the mpeg 3 audio codec i dont get the options to choose bitrate, the whit box is empty

  • @Skud0rz Do you have Lame mp3 from audacity. IF you have then select it. IT compress the same as Mpeg 3 layer codec

  • My antivirus attacked the codec :(

  • who won?

  • @felixandnaruto Me of course, my antivirus is beast

  • lool

  • lol

  • Comment removed

  • i just chose xvid in options and then saved the file in .avi format and it worked. much smaller file now.

  • hey can some1 plz help me...its a serious problem guys.....not joking

  • When i select 'Compression...' it says 'VirtualDub has stopped working' and closes

  • Ok this made my file 4 times bigger then it was before. Lol!

  • Ok now i don't have the mpeg audio options. argh!

  • Nevermind it helps if you install the correct codec. Lol!

  • Mine gives me a "valid depths 24 32" restriction message and i can't force the keyframes.

  • lol .. 4gb to 45mb XD

  • ive tried your tutorial and its great. My file went from 1.4gig to 350mb but theres a problem. My video goes at 1/2 speed for most of the video and then goes back to normal at the last 40seconds. Whats happening?

  • omg hey, thanks i compressed a file big almost 3 gb to a 28mb big file!! Thanks u gota nice 5 star :)

  • Dear BratvaTV, why would you wait for that long must have taken him like half an hour or so, he did edit it because it does increase in a second look carefully at 3:14 to 3:18 look at the Frames that has competed the /7960 then you will see that he stopped the video and when it was about to finish he started recording again.

  • yeah, youre right.. video is edited. My mistake

But I still dont think its humanly possible to compress a file from 700mb+ to 9mb.

  • I think it is possible. However I do not think you could make out what the video was after wards though :-)

  • It was humanly but the computer did it and yes it is very possible try it yourself.

  • Imi ia 15 de minute pentru a converti ! Bun tutorial !

  • Thats impossible.. youre looking at a file that only partially saved. you cant save a file thats 700+MB in a few seconds. And your video tutorial didnt look edited. hmmm. -1

  • it depends on the codec mate ;-)

  • Even with a codec, you cant "compress" a 700mb file in a few seconds. Copy it, maybe, but not recompress. And if you did, no way you can go from 700MB to 7mb. Thats impossible.

  • Stop running your mouth on shit you dont know.

  • Great response. You obviously know a lot. pfft.

  • I followed your instructions or at least I thought I did. My 3.9gig avi file from fraps is going to be a 6472MB file?

what were u doing at the start with the 800x600 stuff???

  • go to "video" > "compression" and choose a codec.

I recommend DivX, XviD, Huffyuv (lossless, big file but you can edit) and there's x264 for windows mod.

  • when i do it is says error 2. somebody plz help me

  • Thankyou

  • i cant get the msu screen capture in the drop down options please help me i downloaded it also

  • wtf!? now my audio isnt synced ohh noes someone help plz

  • Nice kool job }]

  • please have a look at my newest video, Elfen Lied opening that i used Virtual Dub for ^^

  • Why use MSU instead of DIVX?

  • DivX is pretty good, but Quality-Size wise, its not the most efficient codec available

  • Uh, i have used VitualDub for a long time now, and ive never had problems, but just recently, as soon as i either click Video>Compression or press Ctrl+P, VirtualDub just freezes :( does anyone know how to fix this? Google doesn't help...

  • strange. did you try to open any videos that are compressed with a different codec?

  • yeah no matter what i do...

if i open WinAVI and click Any to AVI it just closes, and when i try to import anything into VirtualDub it just says no lol :(

  • just reformatted my HDD... works fine now...

  • Wow! That's a radical fix. Was that by accident or out of frustration that you reformatted the HD?

  • yeah reformatted and all of my programs work now, even after effects which ive been trying to get to work for months. back then, i couldnt even preview the first frame in the "Details" section of the "Common Tasks" on the left without windows crashing. all good now

  • Why don't you use fast-recompress instead of full processing mode? If you're only using VirtualDub for compression and don't apply any filters fast-recompress is quite a bit more efficient.

  • when i open up a video in VirtualDub after i increase the volume n i want this new edit to replace the old one how do i do it

  • thanks dude:)

  • Thank you. You helped me!

  • realy thx.

  • uhm,, i was just wondering,

i downloaded the MSU lossless file thingy,

but i dont know where to save it..

    plss tell.. tnx...

  • It should be in the README that came with the download. If not, put it into the location

    C:/Program Files/VirtualDub/Plugins

  • make sure to change .dll to .vdf too :)

  • I've had that problem before, if you don't change the .dll to .vdf, but I was wondering...how do you do that? o-o

  • Ok, so I did everything exactly as in the video, yet I get this error when trying to compress:

    "Error initializing audio stream compression:

The audio codec cannot compress the source audio to the desired format.

Check that the sampling rate and number of channels in the source is compatible with the selected compressed audio format."

Do you know how you "check that the sampling rate and number channels in the source is compatible with the selected compressed audio format"?

  • ah yes. virtual dub doesnt like to try and convert, say, 192kb/s 44100khz to 320kb/s 48000khz

you could use virtual dub to "copy audio stream" and then use something like WinAVI to recompress and set custome audio. thats what i do and everything turns out fine

  • Thank you very much! Have a great day x)

  • Do all these features come in virtual dub 1.7.2 because i can't ind the virtual dub 1..7/1?

  • where is the MSU website exactly?

  • Thanks for the tip about the 16/32 size for camstudio, much better at medium 16. I am going to give your compression method a try.

  • Thanks for this video, very informative. I'm currently compressing my youtube video from 2.71GB. Says it will be done in around 17 - 20 mins.

Hopefully i've done it right so it compresses it to a reasonable size and doesn't lose much quality.

    -Blankpoint

  • Thanks a lot! :)

  • so will it look or come out good?

  • Just what ive been looking for!!! 5/5 :D

  • i am struggling with this program. i did everything u said but when i watch my fraps video of wow, it is really slow motion like matrix style.. i then just compressed in WMM but the quality was terrible.. this file was 800 megs when i started after i did the compression on virtualdub it was 300 megs and real choppy. when i did on WMM it went to 8megs but the quality was terrible

  • If you are useing camtasia studio why not compress with it? What does VirtualDub offer that you cant do on camtasia studio?

  • I did all what that movie said, but still i have same size like before, What i can do :(

  • I did all what u said from this movie, but still i have the same size like before maybe 2+/- mb's

  • Impressive software indeed. quite a minimimation of the megabytes. i used them before and really didnt get into it much, but thanks i think ill spend a bit of time familiarizing myself with it now.

  • Thanks for your comment. Be sure to check out Jimmyrcom here on YouTube, he's got other great tutorials that will help you get the most out of Virtualdub

  • Yes, pretty darn impressive!

I guess you never watched the file

  • makes my bloody files even bigger!!!!!!!

  • When that's happened to me I found that I had left out a step. Make sure you check the settings for Audio i.e. full processing mode and compression. Remember you have to set them separately.

    Good luck!

  • hey its seems your good at it

i need help I dont understand it

is i possible to compress a 115mb to something under 100mb plz reply

  • Without more information about the type of file I can't say for sure. If it's an AVI, I'm sure you can.

The easy way would be to use Windows Movie Maker.

Also check jimmurcom here at Youtube he has some great tutorials

  • I already did it i had the avi vid of 115mb

and put it in windows media player and I saved it as a AVI file again and now its 8.95mb LOL

    that was just cool

  • check email.

  • you want to make sure that camstudio is set to 320/240 resolution and it dosnt matter your computer resolution.

use zoom it a free program if you are recording full screen otherwise the vids are blurry, but i dont see the need to record full screen.

  • That's great but why I fail when I try to upload on youtube, the error say: Enable to convert the file?

    Any solution?

  • Yeah! I wish I had the answer to that but I don't. I do have a good work-around though. Windows Movie Maker compresses large AVI files very well. You also get the added features that WMM offers as well i.e. titles, transitions, etc. and I've never had one of those files rejected by any online video site.

    I hope this helps you.

    Kim

  • Thanks MrKimB, I've done with WMM and finally works. Cheers

  • I had the same problem and was wondering is it the codec we use or something else ? Just curious.

  • Thank you! I'm happy it helped you. VirtualDub is a great program.

  • Great guide man! really the best so far! =D

  • Your tutorial is great.

May I ask you what is the function of "force keyframe"?

  • Thanks for you kind comment novalusfilm. I don't know the answer to your question. But I'll bet Nick of the camstudio videos will be able to tell you. If you haven't be to his web site it's camstudio dot org Also if you enter video compression in the search box at msu dot edu it'll pull up a boat load of articles. I hope this helps. Thanks again.

  • hey great thanks you for the help

  • You're welcome. Thank you for the comment. Makes me want to do more. :-)
