No Ryu was number 1 mainly due to lack of chinese participation. But he ended up winning it.

I'm sorry, I was wrong. Ryu was ranked 3rd in the world _during_ this contest, and after it he jumped up to 2nd spot. But a month later he was down to 4th spot on the world rank.

And Ryu won it because he could beat Waldner and Wang Hao, where as Ma Lin and Wang LiQin couldn't. Whether the contest between Wang Hao and Wang LiQin in the semis was rigged or not, I will not (yet) pass judgement. I've heard some say that it was most definately rigged, as Wang Hao had better statistics against Ryu.
