In movies, especially when your filming outdoors, keeping the lighting consistant is key. As opposed to in a sound stage where lights can be much more strictly controlled. My guess is that it's to block out any outside traffic lights from glaring in.

This is also the scene where she tried to endanger herself (to hear edward's voice) by approaching guys who look like gangsters just like the ones who ran after her in the twilight movie where she was saved by edward....
