Very good. Top-notch technique. Did you practice with a trainer knife? I'd be a bit wary of practicing with a live blade. I have a waved Endura and Delica, but I don't open them nearly this quickly.
If you could show a slower version of this, it would help clarify how you arrive at the various grips.
I don't think I owned a trainer when I shot this video, lol. As far as the various grips, for the forward grip, and reverse-grip edge-out, I simply draw the knife and close my hand around it. For the reverse-grip edge-in, you have to "roll" the knife into your fist since it starts out in the edge-out orientation. Search "P'kal folder carry and deployment" from ShivWorks for a great description/explanation of the technique.
I've been told having the wave horn catch on the lining of your pocket has a tendency to really wear it out, sometimes to a point where it begins to rip the seam.
Is that true or are they just talkin out their ass?
yeah, that can happen if you use the wave a lot (dozens of draws). I would just practice with an older pair of jeans/pants so you don't wear out a nice pair.
I highly doubt it...the "flipper" one those types of knives requires the pressure to be applied in the opposite direction. That said, you might be able to "bump" it against your leg or something but it definitely wouldn't be ideal.
wow! this is the first wave video i've seen demonstrating different ways (i.e. reverse grip) and back and front pocket deployment left and right sides! GOOD VIDEO! 5 STARS!
As a southpaw, and using the WAVE function in the left front or rear pocket, is one limited to the so-called 'reverse-grip' or is 'front-grip' possible as well.
This was a pretty good video compared to most on this underwhelming You Tube site. Anyway, I ended up getting a SOG Flash II, and waiting for its arrival.
I like the Spyderco but ordering and wait through Amazon just too time-consuming for those knives.
What is the benefit of the Wave type of knife. I don't know anything about it, and its advantages over other designs.
BTW, very impressed with the technique you used. The hand IS quicker than the eye.
The main advantage is the speed. Because it opens AS it leaves the pocket, it's the fastest folder to get into action (even faster than an automatic or assisted-opener).
Yes, now I understand. Another video showed its operation in a slower manner.
In spite of purchasing the SOG Flash II I ended up buying the 4th generation of your model because the clip is ambidextrous. Looking forward to receiving it within a week or so.
I'm leftie so I hope that the quick draw you have demonstrated using the Wave, and using the Thumb Hole can be mastered through some practice, in spite of my 'handicap'.
I know so little about knives I'm not sure what 'reverse grip' means. I'll probably just experiment with the knife when I receive it and hopefully not cut myself...
If it is clipped to the pocket I guess that one would have to rotate the knife 90 degrees in order to engage the Wave 'hook'?
Please explain if you get a chance to respond to these questions.
and even faster than a switchblade! I almost bought a sog flash2 but chose the benchmade mini-ambush! It is not assisted opening, but deploys so fast, you don't even need assist! You should check out my review on it! Also, check out knivesplus. com because they have great discounts on awesome knives! ( i just shop there alot, i don't advertise for them!)
That was the fastest wave draw I've ever seen, considering that you drew it into reverse grip. How do you transition to reverse grip so fast? I can open my Emerson Combat Kerambit into forward grip fast enough, but transitioning to reverse is difficult.
instead of sliding your thumb into the pocket (like you would for forward grip), pinch the butt of the knife between your thumb, index and middle fingers and draw (the thumb will hood behind the butt of the knife, the index and middle fingers will be on the clip), then just roll it into your hand (think of the motion you use for making a fist).
the clicking was the knife locking open (the audio is not quite in sync). I was not cutting my hand, the design of the knife allows you to close it with one hand.
+5. I've got a few more spyderco's en route and might just have to pick up another endura this time with the wave. Nice knife with good demo of action! I posted some vids spydies-sogs-benchmades etc.

Not as easy as it looks. It's not a problem to use the wave with a standard position but how he gets the different grips took some practice.

the hook on the spine of the blade catches the pocket and swings the blade open as the knife is drawn.

Do you know if a wave opening would work on a Kerhaw Skyline? It looks as if it would.

I'm new to the "wave" so I'll need more info/demonstration. How are you doing it?
rolsby 2 years ago
the hook on the spine of the blade snags the pocket on the way out and causes the blade to open.

love the wave

if you want to draw to front grip with the left hand, you just have to switch the pocket clip.

what kind of spydercos did you use in the demo?
kilowogglc 4 years ago
3rd Generation Enduras

when did spyder co steal the wave from EMERSON?
nomilkforsanta 4 years ago
1. this was a personal modification, nobody stole anything from anyone.
2. The new versions of the waved Endura, Delica, and P'kal were produced after Spyderco got the rights from Emerson to use his concept.
kenpotex 4 years ago
Is it the "surf's up" mod, zip tie mod, or did you cut a notch in the spyderhole?
ieatsuka 4 years ago
notched the thumb-hole
