your not using those knives for their intended purposes. for one, the airforce survival knife is meant for cutting aircraft aluminum, and cutting through the canopy. and those tests were not really testing their survival abilities. you were just beating the hell out them. if you knew survival skills, you would know that you should try to use your knife as little as possible...but anyway...iwould go with the airforce survival knife
If you were aircrew regularly in an aircraft, which knife would you prefer then? Aircraft skin, even the thinnest sections, are about 1mm thick...... of course it depends on pressurized or un-pressurized, but still, all are much thicker than the tin can you used to test with. Plus, it's harder aluminum, 6061 or such. Would be cool to see you test these knives in an aircraft type material, and see how they do, especially considering the areas of airframe, which is roughly every 6-12" apart.
hey i have a camilus knife, mines is in a brown leather case, and is bit more tatty looking, but knife is sound,Am scottish, but know its an american pilots survival knife.
The camilus can be used to split wood into smaller burn able bits. You can see the how to around YouTube, the sog I'm not sure I'd trust with splitting wood like that.
It's a fecking file! - the serrations on the Cmillus knife! Thank's for an otherwise nice vid. But frankly, you look stupid trying to saw through the tin with it! Just look at the width of it - really doesn't take a genius to suss it out.
@ciora1980 I was just trying it out, and since I didn't have a fuselage handy I had to use whatever was handy. It's not a file though, it's for cutting through aircraft aluminum.
Great Vid..I would be very happy with either and would not complain with either, though I could have two or three Camillus Knives for the same price as the SOG,..thus I'd prob choose the Camillus..Well Done!!! =)
The SOG is 3 times more costly. The Airforce knife is very tough, gets the job and carrys a stone to boot. Go Camillus. (I carry a good pocket knife for opening tin cans, etc.) stonenstrop
@martynbiker you havent ever been in a SHTF situation either. I have. I used the SOG. It got me home. And using a SOG doesnt make you a "poser", in fact no knife can make anyone a poser. So sincerely, shut the fuck up.
@beatty169 You're not a badass because you've been in a bad situation with a knife and people don't value your opinion when you flame them every comment sincerely, calm down and grow up
I prefer the Ka-Bar USN Mk 1 to both of these. You have a good blade profile, good for basic cutting, plus a butt cap for pounding. I'm not sure if there is a serrated version (mine is smooth). I do prefer a shealth with a stone pouch, but that's an afterthought. You can easily store a stone somewhere with your gear.
@weetoddtv dude deadliest warrior sucks when it comes to names of equipment they tried to say a walther p 38 was a luger handgun. and the knife used on the show was a WW 2 Ka-Bar. this knife wasnt even around at that time
go with the camillus...blade sharpness is mandatory..and it has it's own stone and is much easier to sharpen...sharpening stainless steel out in the boonies is nearly impossible...
Last time anyone mentioned Amazon prices was a year ago.
For reference you can get the Ontario knife for 45 dollars new, and the Seal Pup for 55 dollars new. Dont know if that makes a difference to anyone or not. If you think the Sog is the superior blade then its easily worth a few dollars more.
if my LIFE depended on it, give me the CAMILLUS, if you wanna be a poser, take your SOG.............you have obviously never been in a SHTF situation......
I'd just like to share my two cents. If you're in an extreme survival situation and you don't have a lot of time for toolcare, the stainless is better - it won't rust up on you and that is invaluable when the sheest has hit the fan.
Yeah, not a "saw". It's called "jimping" or sometimes "gimping" and it's meant to increase friction for better purchase while gripping a knife or doing techniques like batoning.
@jraybu09 ....thats what it is in a sense. like all before and even on the video is said. Its used for cutting through aluminium in the old aircraft if the pilot was trapped. I would say that the chunky pommel was also for the same purpose of escape
The saw teeth were made for a pilot to hack his way out of a jammed canopy or thru the side of the fuselage if needed. it is a emergency tool, not a fancy custom job. It will take a beating and stay together.
the back of the camilus is meant for sawing wood. the serrations on the sog pup are pretty much meant for anything but wood. my guess is that the reasoning is thus: a pilot crashing in the wilderness probably wont have much use for sawing sheet metal.
Great review. 5*******. I believe that the saw on the Camilus pilot survival knife is designed to cut thru aluminum fuselage in the event that you need to get in or out.
@thenegev77 I was with the 4th Air Commandos in Vietnam. The Air Force survival knife is a LOT better blade. It's a great all around knife as well as a fighter/survival knife.
But nah seriously you're flooding the comments trying to teach internet idiots, if you've come to youtube for intelligent conversation, you'll be sorely disappointed
@Taud your so right. I dont know what came over me...i guess i just snapped under the share weight of ignorance topped with arrogance. If no one corrects them they tell others who wouldn't know better. This is how idiocy spreads. For instance just on the knife topic yesterday i happened to find a whole lot of people calling a pommel a pomo??? When i confronted one as too why this perversion existed he just said i have seen alot of others call it a pomo so i thought this was right. Dangerous.
@ataraxic89 though it is true that technically speaking you can stab or slash somebody with ANY knife, certain knives are designed for it.
For instance if you were to stab somebody with the Camillus there is a good chance it would get trapped in their clothing or on a bone, or the tip would snap, or the blade would just plain break.
Conversely, if you were to use the SOG as a tool for any extended period of time you would risk breaking it. Dislodging from the handle seems most likely.
@n0s1r ,What? You serious?I read a review of a guy who wanted to take the handle of his Seal 2000 off.Hammering away on it didnt do anything.Go figure.Molden handles are stronger than those in the ESEE or Busse knives where they are screwed or pinned on.The Glock handle doesnt go loose when hammering on it.Look at knifedestruction test Glock 81.Just sayin..And the tip of the camillus breaking when stabbing? You dont stab much do you.People get stabbed with a Mora in Sweden.Go figure..
That was a great comparisson video. I never heard of the camillus, but I might get it. I'm on a budget for right now and need nothing tooo fancy. The only other two fixed blades I have are a machete and ak47 bayonet.
no its a saw ,but its not a conventional saw its made for cutting through plexi glass and the alluminum that planes are made from and you have to use it at a angle plus it only goes one way
@r3tards0fjuctic3 wrong on this one like so many others, Its an escape saw for aircraft material but as a bonus makes for very good gimping i would suspect. Nice try at trying to sound smart though.
I'm glad you wrote that info about the Stainless steel inferior to Carbon steel. I must own 15 stainless steel blades, and they are ALL shit. They can't keep an edge for shit, and are a pain to sharpen. I own one carbon steel knife (Gerber) and I love it, holds an edge great, stays decently sharp even if I don't sharpen for months at a time. I'm definitely looking to add more carbon knives to my collection.
I have a suggestion for a knife by SOG. It is the Sogfari 13 or 18 inch machete. It has a saw on the back that is really affected, it has 3 lanyard holes like the gerber LMF infantry to make it in to a spear or a long staff to saw threw branches that you can't reach. The blade is made of stainless steal. It coms with a nylon sheath with a
@Chris40679 if they had a hollowed out handle for storing items. These two knives don't have that design feature...Pommel is still the word he's looking for..
the ridges on the back of the camillus knife is to cause more pain when going into a body, i'd get a new one w/o the ridges...people used to get excuted just for having one by any military during WW2 especially
I don't like either of these. My edc is a big bowie fixed blade. No serrations, then a couple of folders, one tanto with serrations, and another one that cost more than either of those, and I don't particularly like, though I think it'd make a good throwing kinfe. Clip point style.
Then also a small vise grips that I can use for many things, like an improv hammer, or gripping things, also wiire cutter. Would like to weld a big chain link onto the butt end of that. So I can tighten it up like tin knockers do (yeah, I used to be a tin knocker. That's how I learned that little trick. You do that so you can tighten up the vise grips more after you close them). But if I had to choose, Id go with the SOG.
well first the sog does not have saw thats a serated blade not a saw second the saw on the 499 is a file for notching maybe at best. and third to different eras of technology lol.
thank you, it is also used for emergency use of cutting through your restraining devices (seat belts), but like i said, only for emergency use, because it does take a while.
@joedacop That is a great survival use for it, but it is actually used to allow a downed pilot to be able to cut through plane fuselage and escape the plane.
@joedacop it is a saw why the fuck would an air force pilot carry a knife for making traps (unless stranded) its used to cut through airplane fuselages
Why did you make sure not to use the serrations on the seal pup when cutting rope? The whole point of them is for better ability to cut cordage. Also you thing you didn't mention the camilluus was designed for the air force, the seal pup is a smaller version of a knife designed for the navy. The seal pup is my favorite knife for my kayak. I never have to worry about it rusting, even after spending all day in salt water.
I went through the Air Force air crew survival course and we were told to hold the saw blade at an angle when cutting. The saw was not designed to be used on the flat (top) side as you demonstrated. Try turning it so the side contacts the material at an angle and you will get better results. The teeth are also spaced so they can be used to create sparks from a magnesium fire starter. Thanks for the gret vid.
your not using those knives for their intended purposes. for one, the airforce survival knife is meant for cutting aircraft aluminum, and cutting through the canopy. and those tests were not really testing their survival abilities. you were just beating the hell out them. if you knew survival skills, you would know that you should try to use your knife as little as possible...but anyway...iwould go with the airforce survival knife

the ridges on the back of the camillus knife is to cause more pain when going into a body, i'd get a new one w/o the ridges...people used to get excuted just for having one by any military during WW2 especially

YoungBrave2006 1 year ago
well first the sog does not have saw thats a serated blade not a saw second the saw on the 499 is a file for notching maybe at best. and third to different eras of technology lol.
fatdan172501 1 year ago
Where did you get the Ontario 499 for 30$? on Ebay, it's like 50$ WITHOUT shipping!!!! OUTRAGEOUS!!!!! lol

jshow420 1 year ago
@joedacop no it aint bud. its for aircraft aluminum. so says the design
boomunderscore0 1 year ago
@joedacop
thank you, it is also used for emergency use of cutting through your restraining devices (seat belts), but like i said, only for emergency use, because it does take a while.
HarrisonxThexManx 10 months ago
@joedacop That is a great survival use for it, but it is actually used to allow a downed pilot to be able to cut through plane fuselage and escape the plane.
dr0c3 8 months ago
@joedacop it is a saw why the fuck would an air force pilot carry a knife for making traps (unless stranded) its used to cut through airplane fuselages
loganlhill 8 months ago
@joedacop your annotching tool is in fact a saw for fiber glass on planes and choppers

I never have to worry about it rusting, even after spending all day in salt water.
otetechie 1 year ago
the only modern knife who cann challenge the camilluus is the wild-tactic of wildsteer
druisteen2 1 year ago
I went through the Air Force air crew survival course and we were told to hold the saw blade at an angle when cutting. The saw was not designed to be used on the flat (top) side as you demonstrated. Try turning it so the side contacts the material at an angle and you will get better results. The teeth are also spaced so they can be used to create sparks from a magnesium fire starter. Thanks for the gret vid.
