really the cost of getting that thing moving and in working condition is astronomical, shes pretty rusted up. It is kinda like finding a WWII bomber in your back 40.......is it possible? is it worth it? my answer.............if i had the money to fly out there and help ya...... i would...... : )
I hate too see it like this but...That is a free bulldozer sittin there and with some elbow grease...u can get it running. I hope somone can say it before its too late.
THIS may sound stupid, as I'm not a fanatic fan of these things. But do they require a key, or are they just really easy to hot wire? As a lot of people are telling 'you' to take it?
Raginroadrunner, you don't know what your talking about. IF you could get it out of there it would bring thousnads in scrap. Tylerscummins is right. Let it lay.
Tracks worn out, Pony motor several thousand dollars, if it's up for grabs...why not...get it runnin,,,if it will turn over and if the injection will work..she'll start..might not be finals left..the whole thing ain't worth $100 for scrap.
$100 for scrap? What are you talking about? Scrap here is $250 a ton. A Catapillar D8 weighs about 19 tons. That's $4,750 in scrap value. It will be worth more once it is running on it's own power.
@grizzleypeak That old Cat still has some life left. Hope they didn't scrap the old girl, I'd love to give them idjits at the Forest Service a piece of my mind.
@jim330rifle I know. But two major problems: get a trailer in there and load it. Then get it out without being caught. Would need some serious rebuilding.
@Fireheart528 It looks to be in good shape.I know a man that would love to have that machine and he could get it running too.I think Cat didn't have hydraulics on their machines until after WW2.As for moving it out of there. That wouldn,t be to hard for somebody who knows what they are doing and has the right gear.As for getting in trouble, that is what night is for.To hell with the Forest Service.
@Tylerscummins Its funny some old timers would rather let them rust to the ground then sell them to some one who wants to restore and reuse it.. Trust me i know, i found one deep in the woods an the old guy was having no part in selling it.. sad
yeah, she'll fire up pretty easy all you need is a pony.to get her cranking..the main engine.the rest is easy..clean fuel & filter, clean oil & filters....
This poor old Cat has been beaten to death over the years. The undercarriage is shot. That's why it was abandoned. It costs a fortune to replace the undercarriage so if it had some issues with the motor, transmission, or final drives then it's not worth pouring a bunch of money into. It is a shame to see it sitting there, abandoned.
there are so many things ive seen abandoned...abandoned cars, trucks, machine like these, houses, mansions, entertainment parks, carnivals, etc lol..BTW this cat you found looks like a giant piece of gold that just need some dust blown off. take that baby home!
It is really a shame that someone, so long ago, left this machine to rot away there. It seems that it could still be providing some useful purpose, if only it had been maintained.
I am sure there are a few folks out there who would get it off that property, just to restore it.
@TUTUZGARAGESERVICE you got that right we used to have one we moved more dirt with that dam D8 than ive ever seen in my life. start it up and take it home i would if i knew where it was at
@GangstababyJT See???? Folks agree with me...she's a fukkin' keeper!!!! scrap you'll get paid by the ton...D-8...the tractor alone weighs 25 tons. You can get more out of it by getting her running & working her than scrapping her...scrap is a 1 time deal...work is continuous. I scrapped the most old heavy equipment than anyone else in the Hawaiian Islands due to our contract with HMR (Hawaii Metal Recycling) & we were getting $40.00 a ton from 93-97. I think the price is 1/2 that now. RUN IT!!!!
what a pice of history, take it

No pony motor (starting engine)
You'd need another tractor to push or pull it to get it started, the undercarrage is whooped...it's pretty good right where it's at I'd say.
