...the show was stopped, obviously, and someone came on stage & offered ticket refunds for those who just wanted a bit of bovva, so that the show could resume. This worked out, the dj spun some reggae to cool people down (first I ever heard the original Police & Thieves!) and after 40-odd minutes the Stranglers came on, somewhat less cocky.
I played my first paid gigs in Cleethorpes too, in some caravan park bar round about that time: lots of anti-punk grief there, too.
The first gig I ever saw was the Stranglers at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens, sometime in '77, and there was a lot more trouble at that one. There was some scuffle in front of the stage; JJ Burnel took off his bass & said "if you think you're so tuff, I'll take on any two of you!" Two seconds later the Stranglers were running for their lives, instruments flying, as several dozen spidermen rushed the stage: so much for JJ's karate!
absolutely no contest the damned were and still are musically superior to anything the sex pistols had to offer maybe mr rotten was pissed off that malcolm mclaren wanted dave vanian, and well said captain.........still the most underated guitarist around....long live the damned....
Cleggy rules, best fish and chips ever, i look forward to the crazy golf with my dad. Saw SLF at the Centre Hall, says wintergardens on ticket though. 1982. Great. Jimmy

@demon27dan Aye right pal, Malcolm Mclaren throws together a band to sell his over priced "Punk" clothes , £200 for a bondage suit in '76, (how many people could afford that ) signs them straight to not one but three major labels and they produce one great album, big fucking wows, The Damned were the real thing not a Kng's Road pimp's pale version of the New York Dolls.. The Best thing John ever did was leaving that circus to form the much more vital PIL..
@samhain66 Ah yes..the real thing. So much that they are reduced now to appearing on the same bill as Sex Pistols tribute bands in 'punk nostalgia' shows. At least the last time I saw the Pistols live it was actually the Pistols, the four men who wrote and played the original songs. Last time I saw the Damned they were 'celebrating' their 30th anniversary with two people in the band who joined in the 90's. I thought they were a tribute act until someone pointed it out to me. The real thing!
@demon27dan Funny that, last time I saw the Pistols, It was a pantomime with four blokes that didn't really want to be there charging over the odds for a cabaret set of badly watered down classics. That tribute band you mentioned are worthing seeing again, that pile of cack was not..You also forgot to mention the Damned still tour two or three times a year as headliners as well festivals etc.andf still remain the better live act.
I saw Adam & the Ants there, and Iron Maiden, Hawkwind, Marrillion (with Fish) Def Leppard, Gary Moore, Slade etc... not to mention the mighty Raider...lol
I WAS THERE.
God, I'm old.

This contains an interview with Captain Sensible but - WARNING -
It includes a bluesy pub rock -
nothing to do with punk song
AKA Pretty vacant
(the first 2 were classics Johnny - but you lot went and fucked it right up with the third one)
