They are wonderful - to bad all schools don't have music. The kids really miss a full education without it. And here is some proof how important music can be in a school.
How great you go PS22. Lucky to have music and a teacher so dedicated to the kids. WOW!
I absolutely LOVE this chorus and the kids! They are so inspirational, but I have to say that I was a little disappointed with the change in lyrics. You say it's Christmas traditional, but without, "when Christ was born," and "it is the night of our dear savior's birth," I just feel like the main message is completely erased. I know that kids and everyone celebrates different holidays but sometimes it just upsets me when choruses can't sing anything specific about Christmas anymore. =(
Maybe the "main" message of the original song was left out, but I don't really see the problem because it was replaced by three other very important and up-to-date messages: Peace, love and togetherness. What could be better than kids singing about these virtues?
I'm not disagreeing with you, just pointing out: this is a chorus in a public school, and religion in public schools is a tricky area. The lyric changes were probably made to include students of all religious backgrounds and also to avoid any sort of legal conflict.
One of my favorite Christmas hymns and definitely one of the purest versions I've ever heard. I don't think the words in these comments can completely convey what you and the kids in this program bring to the world.
Our current elementary music teacher is a few years away from retiring (she's a nice lady but lacks in excitement for her job). I will campaign for a new teacher as close to you as possible!

Hearing these kids reminds me why music is so important in schools. They are a reminder of how a child can be molded with the right direction.
