I think it's an unfair advantage since he doesn't have to "carry" the weight of the lower part of his legs. Also, how "springy" are those things?

Have you ever tried the able-bodied equivalent? Give it a shot. They are really fun to use, and man oh man does it boost speed. I don't know if it gives him an advantage or not. I'm just saying that it is a slight possibility that, once you get used to them, they can take off some mass from you, and they have a different bounce...

Personally, I would have loved to see him run against the others, and I would have been overjoyed to see him kick ass on the track. I hope he makes it next time : )
