etano1, minarets do not necessarily means loudspeaker and viceversa. A loudspeaker can be installed on the roof of the mosque anyway and don't need a minarets. Plus, in most western non muslim countries the loudspeaker are shutt off during the morning prayer becasue Muslims follow the law of the country. Here in New York for example, mosques never turn on the loudspeaker in the morning prayer. the reason to ban minarets is simply xenophobia/islamophobia.
My position is to try not to fall into the trap of "eye for an eye". I'm not a good negotiator by any definition, but I feel that attacking symptoms rather than causes - preferably root causes - is not going to resolve extremist behaviour and fear of it. Although interfaith dialogue is tough also because the roots just might not be genuine religious ones. Fundamentals of Islam, as I understand them, are peaceful yet are interpreted otherwise by some - just like the Bible is being interpreted out of context by some Christian fundamentalists. Widespread poverty in Muslim countries and political oppression by the west are my two votes for root causes. Poverty alone doesn't do it otherwise why don't we have worldwide terrorism from the Hindus and the Budhists? Definitely support by the west in general of Israel against Palestine - is a central issue.
