The lack of regulation and a government run system pretty much let insurance/health care companies run wild with their prices. A few hours at a doctor visit (most of the time spent waiting on the bed) costs enough to buy a used car. There is something seriously wrong with the system we have here and yet people are so into this "socialism" crap they don't see their own money being siphoned out by corporations.
Maybe Obama associating his program with Medicare isn't such a good idea. Medicare and the other entitlements are going to KILL this country's budget ... and Obama wants to emulate it (or something like it) for everybody? Here's where the competition comes in play between an insurance company and the public option. A company in which you receive healthcare benefits through insurance companies will realize that the public option is a whole lot cheaper (which is apparently is what the white house is claiming) so obviously they are going to start putting people on that program rather than through an insurance company.
The problem with the public option is that when the government gets involved and competes with businesses, they are always going to be the ones who will be victorious because you can't compete with taxpayer money and more printed money. And that's what they public option is designed to do is to bankrupt the insurance companies, WHY? I'm not sure, why don't you ask GM or several banks that were bailed out, they are controlled by the government. Why do you trust the government as a business?!
They aren't using them, they are putting them on a different program, which by the way is funded by your taxes even if you aren't on the healthcare program.
No I'm saying that private health insurance could compete with the public option if they decided not to profit off of sick people. Insurance companies are ran for profit. I broke my collar bone 2 yrs back. It cost over $6000 for a few hours in the emergency room. As the evening progressed, I told them that my insurance was running out at midnight (absolutely true). They had me out the door in a half an hour after the past 2 hours of me just sitting around. The prospect of them not getting their money suddenly lit a fire under them. Sidenote: my expensive treatment culminated in them handing me a sling for my arm, something I came in the hospital wearing.

Why did Obama, as a senator, vote against allowing people to buy out of state health insurance? Allowing interstate competition between insurance companies would certainly drive down costs, but Obama voted to maintain state by state monopolies.

When doctors and insurance companies simply cannot compete (which they don't compete across state lines, and some even more locally) it's almost like a monopoly they have a price control...to some extent. That's what needs to be fixed in our healthcare system, not continue doing what we've been doing to it.

@Kavafy It's funny that nobody ever talks about our quality heathcare, despite the price, not cost...Because according to the National Intelligence Cancer Center of the UK and the Canadian Cancer registry (who everyone is comparing our system to) you have a less chance of survivability and success from a treatment if you get skin cancer, then you do in the US. And it's the same for breast cancer, kidney cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, leukemia...the list goes on and on.

I had to go to the ER a few weeks ago due to a sudden irregular heartbeat and nausea with no known history of heart problems, just to make sure it wasn't serious. I don't do drugs or anything so I wouldn't expect that.The cost for my 5-hour stay where I saw a doctor for perhaps 5 minutes? $10,000!!!! They charged over $800 for a ECG! Hundreds more for "checkups" (nurses taking my blood pressure every hour or so) and other ridiculous items!

I broke my collar bone 2 yrs back. It cost over $6000 for a few hours in the emergency room. As the evening progressed, I told them that my insurance was running out at midnight (absolutely true). They had me out the door in a half an hour after the past 2 hours of me just sitting around. The prospect of them not getting their money suddenly lit a fire under them. Sidenote: my expensive treatment culminated in them handing me a sling for my arm, something I came in the hospital wearing.

The "nonpartisan, independant" research firm [Lewin Group] being cited by the GOP during the Health Care debates, is owned by Health Insurer UnitedHealth, so you'll have to be dumb and blind to believe what they are saying.

Why did Obama, as a senator, vote against allowing people to buy out of state health insurance? Allowing interstate competition between insurance companies would certainly drive down costs, but Obama voted to maintain state by state monopolies.
His new plan wont create competition, it will only increase government power. That is his true goal. He'll appoint 10 more czars and hire thousands of bureaucrats, costing the tax payer billions, if not trillions.
