What a totalitarian. No trust in his musicians. I could never work for such control freak. It IS great music. One wonders what would happen if Zorn stopped the iron fisty action.
@polyhydrant it needs to be said however, that Israel is an expansionist power, and is thus, to that extent, immoral. I have no idea of zorn's views on this.
Really? What a political genius you are. And a philosopher too. Why shouldn´t Jews live in Judea and Samaria when 1.7 million Arabs live in Israel. Do the names of Hebron, Jericho, Bethlehem, Yerushalayim, Schechem sound Arabic to you? It is pure Hebrew. Why should I, a person with a 4000 year history, listen to somebody like you who is not even part in the conflict. Your horizon is too narrow, if any. Clean your own treshhold.
@McLeod54 Are you referring to when he taps on his head. That means 'lets play the head of the song after the resolution'. Head of the song is (usually) the beginning melody.
these people were born rich and didn't have anything better to do than pretending of being cool and "ahead"...or maybe they are amazing and are my new religion...can't decide.
@danlovesnan Bah! Bien qu'ils soient nés riches ca veut rien dire. Y a trop de gens riches qui rien ne savent faire. Au moins ils ont bien profit de sa vie. J'adore.
The account of the siege of Masada was related to Josephus by two women who survived the suicide by hiding inside a cistern along with five children, and repeated Eleazar ben Ya'ir's exhortations to his followers, prior to the mass suicide, verbatim to the Romans. Because Judaism strongly discourages suicide, Josephus reported that the defenders had drawn lots and killed each other in turn, down to the last man, who would be the only one to actually take his own life.
This is awesome... thanks so much for posting. I love Zorn's worth... and the 50th electric masada CD is excellent and includes a longer version of this song... check it out.
is this on DVD or something??? this video lacks the introduction, which is just amazing!!!!!!! there used to be the complete version on youtube, but that user (HolgerregloH) is no more signed up, apparently. Please come back!!!!!!!!!
Marcs played with Tom Waits, Trever Dunn with Bungle, Cyro with Herbie Hancock, and Zorn with countless musicians, this is ridiculous how many different backgrounds these musicians come from
whoever asked about the scale - it's a mode of the harmonic minor scale - use the notes of f minor - instead of f as the tonic - c is the tonic. mess around with d/dflat and e/eflat. each one adds a different color to the scale.
Tight groove, kicking band. Some parts a little too experimental for my taste, but overall, a phenomenal performance. Props to John Zorn for his musical insight.
I've been watching this for a long time and now when i try to watch it, it stops at 1:36, is anyone else experiencing this? It sucks cause this is one of my favourite vids.
this music would stop the holocaust...

Pointing the head ussualy means "da capo" in music it means: from the beginning of the song or certain passage.
rodrigoaragon 2 years ago 3
In Zorn's case it means refrain though.

what intrvals are they useing to get that harmony part in the main theme?
timothypetergreen 4 years ago
Jewish or Spanish Scale, or 5th mode of Harmonic Minor:
R - m2 - M3 - P4 - P5 - m6 - m7 - R
Almost all of the Masada songs are based off that scale once you decipher the root notes.
cleomagoolando 3 years ago 3
Yea, it's a jewish scale called Ahava Raba!
Trevor Dunn made an awesome article about this song in Bass guitar magazine!
