"All my lyrics are open to interpretation by the individual and imply many different meanings, therefore their relevance is purely subjective." - Ian Curtis
That's a very interesting quote from Curtis, it's almost as if he knew that even 30 years later we'd still be enthralled and fascinated by the near-endless depth to his lyrical standard. It doesn't just remain relavent to Joy Division though - it's a solid argument that can apply to just about all music (aside from pop).
I know many people don't really care about the lyrics, but i do. Ian is my favorite songwriter, and i still think like the very first time i ever read a Joy Division lric (which was this very same song) that if Ian had become a poet or a writer i do believe he had the talent enough to become a great author. LOL, i used to think he could have won the Nobel had he become a writer!.
The riff in this song is the best i've ever heard. in fact, it's on a whole other plane by itself. no other riff made more of the point, much less as powerfully....
i remember sittin wiv me walkman in a london park and a bottle of booze by me side in the eighties listenin to this and people watchin,in the rat race rushin around like headless chickens going nowhere
A very emotionally moving song with boundless depth and a painful melody that lingers. Ian Curtis was a genius with his mastery of lyrics. His mind must have been a dark labryinth of thought tearing the words of flesh from his body. What a legend! Ian taking your own life has left people empty with what could have been. Thanks for what you left us though. RIP mate.
I'm not a fan of conventional musical structure or pop music much, but, the riff part that's a recorded version of its echo has to be the greatest riff of all time. It literally corresponds to the idea of a spirit passing through or someone beginning to die. Wow....

Watching the reel as it comes to a close,
Brutally taking it's time,
People who change for no reason at all,
It's happening all of the time.
Can I go on with this train of events?
Disturbing and purging my mind,
Back out of my duties, when all's said and done,
I know that I'll lose every time.
i cant explain my feelings now ..

This is a crisis I knew had to come,
Destroying the balance I'd kept.
Doubting, unsettling and turning around,
Wondering what will come next.
Is this the role that you wanted to live?
I was foolish to ask for so much.
Without the protection and infancy's guard,
It all falls apart at first touch
