Terry got the assists with Middleton on the line w him. He still had to go get the puck and then get it to .'Nifty.' He was maybe even better than Cam at making a play off the boards... Ok better passer
O'reilly was NEVER a good. Neither was tiger. Tiger had 30 and 35 g in Vancouver. Terry is/was one of the best ever. My dream team has him on line 2 with Sakic and Neely with 99 n line one
Tiger is more well-known for his fighting than the fact that he was a pretty good hockey player. He is Tie Domi's idol, and even though I felt Tie had enough skill to become a 20-25 goal guy like Tiger he never did. Maybe he didn't get enough icetime, or he was just too enamored with being a goon to want to improve his game. I won't remember Domi as a tough player who was offensively skilled, but Williams, and to a greater extent O'Reilly were good all around players.
@dzanier i was as surprised as anyone when Williams got his 35, but i suppose i shouldn't have been, after all, Tiger scored......30 goals between T.O and Van City after being traded the year before, year before that he had 19, year before 19, year before 18, year before 21, so he could score goals! i will always be baffeled as to why the Leafs ever traded him, or Lanny for that matter!! between the two of them and Sittler and Salming they still had a great nucleus to build with. *sigh*
You're not the only one who was baffled as to why the Leafs traded all those guys while they still had a lot to offer (Salming was about 36 so I won't count him). It's unlikely theyd've been able to compete with the Islanders in the early 80's & win a Cup, but theyd've been better than what they were. Harold Ballard was a spiteful owner who wanted to impose his will & Punch Imlach, the coach & GM, was no different. I don't think any team in the NHL was run worse than Toronto in the early 80's.
@dzanier There were 14 teams in the NHL when Terry was a rookie. They expanded to 18 the following year. Then in 1979, they expanded to 21 teams. When O'Reilly was coming up, teams didn't have room for a goon who could only fight. You had to be able to play too. But expansion diluted the talent pool, and before the influx of Europeans came, teams decided to add good fighters who were marginal players because they could help bad teams sell tickets.
@BoSoxnation1972 Great summary and you are correct. Both Terry and Tiger could play. Terry once had 90 points (with 211 pim) and Tiger had 35 goals onece and over 20 goals 4 times with 3 different teams (one season split between Tor and Van). The Dave Browns soon followed and you know what...they were better fighters, but liabilities on the ice
@kvolk99 The sad thing is that it exists to this day! People want to debate whether Milan Lucic can beat up Derek Boogaard! Hey, guess what? Boogaard will win the majority of the time because all he does is fight! He can barely skate! But Lucic can make a huge hit, score a goal, and beat up a goon all in the same game! If Boogaard did that, he'd actually dress more often! That idiot hasn't scored since his rookie year! more than 4 years and more than 190 games without a goal!
@BoSoxnation1972 Lucic only "picks his fights" when challenged by George Laraque he backed down, when Fighting Colton Orr he backed down and quit when got the worst of it.
@belair55zz56 He was ordered not to fight Laraque by Julien, and Boston went onto win 11 straight against Montreal, including a playoff sweep. Orr definitely got the better of Lucic, and broke his nose, & that pretty much ended the fight. But Lucic has more goals this season than Orr has in his entire career, so you're comparing apples and oranges. Lucic is a first line winger, while Orr is a 4th line goon that's one of the top 5 fighters in the league. Orr was also 28 fighting a 21 year old.
Tiger Williams shoewed up up and fought the toughest guy. Milan Lucic chickened out to to fight the modern day toughest guy Laraque..very sad for the Bruins fans..
Yeah, the league now is a lot different now than even just 10 years ago or so. You can't even ride a guy off the puck now wiithout getting a penalty. It's a joke
Tiger Williams and Terry O'Reilly. Two great guys (and fan favorites). Too bad there'd be no place for players like these two in today's NHL. The most important guys on the ice today are the refs. Makes me sick!
These guys are a breed which is now extinct, unfortunately. Guys with enough ability to play in the NHL and also were rough & tough and loved to fight. Terry O'Reilly. Tiger Williams. Paul Holmgren. Behn Wilson. Mel Bridgman. Willi Plett. Clark Gillies. Al Secord. Brian Sutter. Bob Nystrom. Chris Nilan. Marty McSorley. Rick Tocchett. More names escape me right now, but there were many others.
Why did you hate Williams? A cheap bastard? Yes. Courageous enough to take on the toughest, and he did score more than thirty goals in a season--a great feat considering his time in the sin bin.
I remember in the 1978 and 1979 Playoff series with Montreal, Tiger Williams had no dicipline. He would take penalties in retaliation and then Montreal would score. The worst one was Game 4 in Toronto after the Leafs had battled back from a 4-0 deficit. Williams takes a dumb penalty in Overtime and of course Montral scored. Season over!
i remember that. it was wonderful. i also recall williams going balistic after the habs scored the winning goal and larry robinson (who i believe scored the winner) had to restrain him from attacking the official who made the penalty call.
Tiger Williams got....."JACKED UP!!" God I loved O'Reilly.

MAN I miss the Tigers and O'Reillys of this game. Tiger had 35 goals one year. O'Reilly scored 20 more than once...
sparwood8 1 year ago
@sparwood8 --- O'Reilly had 29G and 61A for 90PTS in 77/78
then followed it with a 26G and 51A for 77PTS in 78/79
he went from a goon to a legit power forward.

@dzanier-- you're right. Ballard was the most pathetic owner in NHL history. and the game had passed Imlach by at this time.
