I've heard so much about the theatre's greatest scene change, that being FOLLIES' change into the LOVELAND section of the show. Many thanks for giving this Sondheim fan a glimpse into this brilliant moment in live theater history.
God bless whoever shot this footage. I saw the Original Broadway production. It has haunted me for 38 years and counting. It is quite simply the most memorable Broadway show I have ever seen. I dreamed of finding ANY footage. WOW!
You just made my heart skip about 30 beats or so! I cannot believe this footage even exists!! I feel like a kid on Christmas Day! Thank you! Thank you for posting this! Boris Aronson's set is just incredible especially at the beginning. Actually the rather low quality of sound and image make this piece even "ghostlier" than imagined...wow...just WOW!!!
A very close friend of mine was in the original cast. She was one of Michael Bennett's dancers, who because she was also very tall, also played a showgirl. She is the ghost showgirl in the huge feather hat behind Ethel Shutte in "Broadway Baby" and she's the first showgirl to emerge in this number, holding the lute. She said this was by far the most amazing show she ever did, and these include Camelot, Cabaret, Coco, Promises, and Ballroom. Every bit of footage is absolutely precious.
I'd only read and heard about this sequence. Other productions I've seen since never had the extravagant scenery of the Broadway original's "Loveland" number. I love the way it pops out at you and falls into place within a matter of moments. Just wonderful. Ditto on the thanks so much!
Gorgeous! Hats off to Boris Aronson, Florence Klotz, Tharon Musser, Michael Bennett, Jonathan Tunick and Sondheim and Goldman too!
