Chainshots are absolutely imperative in a battle where the enemy outguns and outnumbers your fleet. It thins the enemy fleet out and lets you pick them up individually.
(Continued) Obviously, you have to use chainshots on the enemy front (or back, if possible) simply because its way more effective than shooting while you keep your ships right beside them. i.e. 'Cross the T - tactics'...
Why on earth are using all those ships? They just cost money! If you are playing the ships to their full capacity, ONE fifth rate ship is more than enough to fight - AND CAPTURE - an entire fleet of fx 5 fouth rates, and 6 Brigs and Sloops... If you use a single fouth rate ship, you can fight of (sometimes even capture) as many as 20 sixth rates. The 'secret' is place your ship in front of the enemy, sail away with the entire fleet on your bag and then continously shoot them with chainshots.
@BlandfortZamael only because the naval AI is stupid as hell, I'm afraid that it makes the french and british campaigns way easier than they were meant to be.
One final note: When the lead ship in the formation loses too much sail, or takes too much damage, the remaining ships break formation and banzai charge.
Start your fight at the length of your range, and only turn as much as needed to get the computer firing before running again. Sometimes it is better to get more distance before you fire.
This is also much easier with 2 or more boats, as 2 running boats doing snaking S turns effectively doubles your fire and therefore sail-killing power
You can also broadside with chain shot directly beside a ship - the rounds will go upwards into the structure, but the damage is only a third of a good roundshot broadside. Useless fact.
The bottom line is Vanilla naval combat is easily exploited and not very realistic. If you want a real nautical challenge, you're better off with a community rework like DarthMod Ultimate Commander. Ex: When boats handle like the pigs they were, and chain shot isn't the GG button, it gets alot more involved
@AnonymousCullen If you're playing the vanilla build of the game, chain shot and round shot have near-as-makes-no-difference range, so I use chain shot almost exclusively.
Did you know the more holes in a hull from round shot, the more effective grapeshot is at killing crew?
Each captured galleon is about 1500 in prize money, and if you're careful, a faster ship can literally run circles around a galleon navy given enough time to cut the sails, due to the predictable AI.
-Expect to take occasional hits. I recommend the frigates (6,5). Sloops fall apart too easily.
Chain misses wildly in Grape-or-closer range.
Chain is most effective with the target's sails open, and fired down its length. You can still hit the masts with sails closed, but you will miss more.
- When you're running away and turning, NEVER broadside. In fact, whenever you're raking the deck (bow to stern or vice versa), always let the computer aim the guns. Broadsides do massive damage, but only directly beside a ship, as the guns have no targeting, To cancel a prepared broadside, dbl click on "Fire at Will"
You can use Fire at Will to reload your guns and control firing 'like' a broadside, but there's no damage or morale bonus for doing so besides "more regular fire".
Having plowed entire AI fleets with single ships, I can safely say Chain shot is the most OP shit in the game.
The key is to run from a fleet while shooting - do S turns to shoot guns while still moving away. It evens out hull dmg too.
Target the lead ship in a formation, when his sails break, the formation will break and charge at you. Rinse and repeat, the AI can't handle a running opponent.
Once everyone's dismasted, they essentially can't move. Grape at close range till surrender. Free $
unfortuneatly you cant do naval bombardments, but i remember on one land battle i did on the coast, there was one of my ships anchored on the shoreline, just like on the campaign map. Dont know why it would be possible for it to do a bombardment :(
chainshoot is good if your timing is right. also their sails have to be down and facing your cannon, otherwise the shots will just fly through and just skim the sail cloth.
ok i have to say, your voice is not clear or loud enough when your making your points...for instance, the beginning you decide to use your admiral to do the chain shots, ok i hear that, but the positioning and formation, you barely say anything about it...its annoying man...you need to clarify the most important details...
just hover your mouse over the formation settings. a description of pros and cons for each of the fundamental formations popsup. the most important thing after that is movement and you can clearly see effective movement in this video. whats the problem?
the one thing i really want them to add in is the ability to use naval ships to capture ports with ships in them, rather than just having a normal battlse out at see, it would be so fun shooting the crap out of the buildings lol
Wow very enjoyable to watch, the quality is great and the graphics are brilliant and i love the commentary, iv subscribed and look forward to more videos =D

why, that was honest feedback. the jerky camera moves feels like you're running around like a headless chicken. try move less (say, count to 5 between camera moves). the less you move, the more confidence you show.. Am I right? Right. I do appreciate the HD quality of the video and the time you spent on it. heil !
it might "show" less confidence but being able to move the camera fast to where u need it to be during a battle is important when playing a game like this. but i believe this is a replay anyways so w/e it doesnt matter >.>
your a retard man, you need micro management in this game (meaning you gotta be everywhere at once) to even win, yeah sure enjoy the spectacle of your own game while your gettin annhililated but i prefer to jerk my camera around and get a overal view of whats goin on.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
that was honest feedback, you sorry asshole. why you call me 'retard'? just for the kicks?? I won't discuss and boast about my skills at this game, but yeah, in case you forgot: GO FUCK YOURSELF YOU FUCKHEAD.
Chain shot was basically two cannonballs connected by a chain. When fired from cannon, they would spin in flight, ripping sails, shredding rope, and if lucky, effectively cutting masts down.
grapeshot not effective? dude fire a volley when ur close to a ship n broadside it in the windows where the officers are, once with grapeshot, ull see LOADs of casualties on the ship cause the bullets fly straight through the ship through all decks into the crew,
During naval battles of the 18th or 19th century, no officer would be below deck unless he was either in command of a gun deck, or wounded, he would not be where the windows were. It was a point of honour for Naval officers to remain standing on the quarterdeck throughout the engagement,
yeah, but where the windows are is where the officer quarters are, and the dining tables n other inquiries they used there, the officer mainly stayed on the aftcastle where the steeringwheel is to get a good view of what his ship is doing and better ways to shout commands
make sure to broadside the side of the ship a couple of times to make some holes and then get up close to the ship and broadside with grape shot. One enemy ship went from 199 to 2 in about 5 seconds then they surrendered. I broadsided them again with round shot.
You can, when the statistics thingy shows up after a naval battle, click on a ship on the bottom row and click on the thing in the middle. You get no money but you get a ship.
I need some advice using the boarding option. I have very few ships at the start of the game and i need to get a fleet going fast or my trade routs go bye-bye. But every time i try to board a ship (after i pounded its crew with canister shots) my ships somehow sink and i lose the battle. I had a brig with full crew and it boarded a brig with half a crew, the other dude won. What am i doing wrong here? I dont want to destroy the enemy ships but take them for myself.
im not an expert, but the eneemy ship,s crew may have more expeirience, or you'r own ships might be on fire, lol, yes you can make enemy ships you'rs (sorry to correct you AudesteFidelis) click on the captured ship and then at the bottom click the button wich says something like (intergrate captured ship into fleet) , you get the meening, you get the ship instead of the prize money... hope that helped
The reason your chain shot isnt as effective sometimes is because they dont have their sails deployed. If they are sailing into the wind then they wont have them deployed and chain shot will do little. If you catch them af full sail deployement then thats when you can really do damage
Maybe its just me, but if you make a ship list slightly and you force him to turn in the direction he is listing, he starts sinking, even with little damage
Why would you want to use chain shot? Yes I know it's to slow down enemy ships, but I generally just try to blow them out of the water, otherwise it takes way too long.
I keep forgetting that I'm not playing when I watch this. I always move the mouse to get a better view!
