  • Brilliant - took me away from here for nearly 12 minutes! Anyone know the name of the trumpet player and whether the famous horn line was originally scored or improvised?

  • the guy who sang lead to this nearly refused to sing it cause it was really the day his daddy died

  • @wcwnumber1fan his name is Dennis Edwards, whose tenure with the Temptations launched them in a different direction.

  • @winnerdonna mine was a statistician, but we could never count on him

  • Hey, buddy, I've listened to the original version played by The Undisputed Truth and I guess it's more beautiful. I don't like covers since in general the cover band MURDERS the original version (that's to say, it changes everything). Anyway, The Temptations' one is okay. (GILBERTO SAUGEN do Brasil)

  • Actually, cmulwee001, there IS a compilation called PSYCHEDELIC SOUL. It covers the period of '68-73, and has the full album versions. As far as calling it a "cover" song, that's kind of debatable. It wasn't written or produced by The Temptations or The Undisputed Truth. Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong wrote it, and many of the songs of the day (not just Motown) where given to other artists. In the case of Temtations/Undisputed Truth, it's the same musicians & both are produced by Whitfield

  • @bgbrezniak

All I know is that The Undisputed Truth's version came out in either January or February of 1972. It did fine on the R&B charts. but petered out at number 68 on the pop charts. The more well known Temptations version came out later that year in either October or November and was a huge hit.

The Temps and TUT did a LOT of the same songs. Besides this one there was "Ball Of Confusion" and "Smiling Faces(sometimes)"

I guess Whitfield wanted to milk it for all it was worth to make hits

  • @cmulwee001 I've not only I love listen to the music, but I'm also fascinated by the story behind the music, it makes you wonder if that what they say about their father is true or not, knowingly he's no longer there to defend himself. Neither of The Temptations ever said he was bad or good. I've never got a chance to see my dad either. I've seen the movie The Temptations.

  • @sandralawson18 I've never got a chance to see my father either, I was very young when he died. And sometimes mothers got habit of poisoning their children minds about their fathers, knowingly he's not there. Now, they all have to guess if he's bad or good, that's a pretty shame.

  • @sandralawson18

The song was first recorded by The Undisputed Truth. It didn't chart. But when it was handed over to The Temps, Neither Berry Gordy nor the two guys who wrote the song had ANY clue that lead singer Dennis Edwards' father really DID die on the 3rd of September, yet Dennis had to sing that line anyway, at least that's how it was depicted in the Temptations movie. Don't know how accurate the movie was though

  • @cmulwee001 I can easily relate to Dennis Edwards, because I've never a chance to

meet my father, either. I was very young myself when he died. I've hear all the bad things about Dennis Edwards's Father, but what about the good things about his father. I'm pretty sure he's not all that bad, as they claim It seems like the kids are doing the mostly bad mouthing about Dennis Edwards's father, knowingly he's not even there. I would be upset too. I don't know. I wasn't there.

  • It's high time this full length version got release on a Temptations "Greatest hits" or "Best Of", or "The Essential" collection. So far all greatest hits or best of have used the 6:57 single version. This complete 12 minute version is way better. BTW did any of you know that this song was originally recorded by The Undisputed Truth?. Yes, this huge hit song for the Temps is a cover version. A lot of people don't know that.

  • @cmulwee001 just found that out on wikipedia before i came on to listen to it here.

  • @cmulwee001 Hey, man, where can I hear this version of PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE you've mentioned (played by The Undisputed Truth)? Can you post it here? ( GILBERTO SAUGEN from Brazil)

  • @gsaugen

Well it is already here(not by me of course) on You Tube. Type in The Undisputed Truth, and then "Papa Was A Rolling Stone. The Undisputed Truth original is a MUCH shorter song, only about 3 and a half minutes(unless it's a single edit. But then

when Motown Execs decided that The Temps do a cover, they made it into a 12 minute epic. Even the single version is long, about 6 and a half minute. A local station where I live made their own edit of the Temps version, barely 3 minutes if that

  • @gsaugen In fact if you look at the related videos on the side panel The Undisputed Truth's original should be there.

  • @cmulwee001 Here's something for you; The Undisputed Truth originally recorded ''PWARS'', Temptations cover it. The Undisputed Truth's biggest hit. ''Smiling Faces Sometimes'' was first recorded by guess who... The Temptations! Talk about irony.

  • Thanks TSQD01 . Good souvenirs. After 40 years still one of the best .

  • A brilliant Masterpiece of soul. Perfect groove, vocals.....soul...yeah...Masterpiece.

  • I've been looking for the complete version of this song! Thanks for putting it up!
