  • Damn, I came here expecting a mash-up of Van Morrison and Led Zeppelin...

  • touching all the time.

so beautiful, almost the state of scaring

  • The dog feels like the part of my mind that always wants. He seems so beautiful and appealing like the guitar part but he just keeps eating forever. Right burden!

  • Really nice tribute to a great artist/musician. Spooky brilliant evocative song. Nick, I feel your pain sometimes, and sometimes I feel like giving up, but to use another Churchill quote, "If you're going through hell...keep going" and that's what I do, get through just today and that's enough, and sometimes that's all we've got...and the music. Follow the music.

  • @cottageorgan Uh Nicks dead dude im afraid your advice is a little late :P

  • I've never heard someone bare their soul so nakedly in song before. So beautiful, yet so haunting and ethereal. Tho its seeming more and more to me that these two qualities are inseperable. Beauty is so often laced with melancholia- reminds me of a Joni Mitchell quote- "chase away the demons and they take the angels with them."

  • Marvellous.

  • So sad and beautiful. I recently "discovered" Nick Drake. Thanks you for your music, man. No one could help you, but you still help us all.

    Rest In Peace.

  • I'm growin old and I wanna go home!

  • The black eyed dog always knows my name.

  • A generational hero, who has been sullied by this video.

  • the saddest part about this song, is when you search for it, youtube suggests the black-eyed peas

  • I've always loved dogs and reading the song through that sentiment changes it's meaning completely

  • This is so beautifull, touching.

  • this speaks to me

  • You made this out your back window, Looks nice. Where is it?

  • Beautifully done. Leave the text, just as you made it. Thanks for this.

  • Something here resonates with my deepest thoughts, fears, and probably everyone else who hears it too. I won't analyze it too much, just hope when the black dog shows at my door I can accept it with calm and grace.

  • this song would make for a perfect closing sequence to a military drama.

  • I can't believe that I agree with a character named "slapstick murphy." I just thought it was about a boy and his dog. his black-eyed dog that played the guitar and could hit these hair raising harmonics. I must be growin old. I wanna go home.

  • can everybody please stop saying wut this song is about or isnt about. cuz theres no wrong answer.

  • Whooaa.. please take out the picture and information about Nick Drake ): it really takes away from the mood.

  • The sunset footage is gorgeous and very fitting. But you should redo it without the text. The words really kill the mood.

Also, why did you put an apostrophe in "antidepressants"? To make a plural of something, you just add an s.

  • 2 people had a white eyed dog

  • as winter approaches, i know its only a matter of time before the black eyed dog begins to follow me close by, but listening to nick drake at least temporarily scares him off..

  • I wish i had the talent Nick Drake had, what a songwriter, what a great solo artist. So much talent. Very unique sounding song, I can see why it would be difficult to cover this one and do justice@NPC19, although I imagine most of his songs are going to be pretty challenging, or near impossible for most people to cover anyway. I haven't actually tried yet, but well done to those who have and can. Kinda feel like i'd be insulting him if i tried. One day maybe

  • We love this song so much.... BDH

  • 2 people don't understand good music, meaning, or life.

  • a beautiful genius.....

  • Heath Ledger was obsessed with Nick and made a short film about Nick's "Blackeyed Dog Unfortunately Heath suffered the same fate of dying way too young for such a gifted and talented human being.

Google the story behind Heath's making of the movie. The people who put the English news channel story covering the comparison between the two artists and Heath's movie were forced to take it down...Unfortunately, that part of the story may never be told to you. Very sad indeed.

    The Meltdownman

  • @meltdownman1

Why must youtube take everything down? Thank God I've seen that news piece. They took down a beautiful video for BED too. It was on youtube before Heath died. Chances are he'd watched it.

  • Very cool!

  • This is probably the hardest song I can think of to cover. Not because it's technically challenging but because... It's Nick Drake's song, forged from Him... I could never truly do this song justice...

  • nice to just listen

  • beautiful video

    wonderful song

  • The black eyed dog can be a symbol of depression and/or a portent of impending death.

Gives me the shivers knowing actor Heath Ledger was near obsessed with Drake's music... was also born into the upper middle class and had one sister... and died in near identical circumstances in his twenties.

  • @LantaGem dead at the all too common age of 27,although ledger just made it to 28,it would be intersting to see nick drake as the joker, ofcourse he wouldve had to smile n i cant picture that, everyone else;dont rip me apart for that last comment its just a joke

  • @ghostwhiskey Drake was 26 when he died.

  • peace

  • The black eyed dog has followed me around everywhere I've gone for years,,the most sensible description of bi polar that Winston Churchill came up with..fuck ,i wouldn't wish this crap on anyone+I have alot of good moments now..just the memory of the bad fills me with horror

  • this song is so beautiful but sad... so sad that it makes me cry a little tear everytime I listen to...

  • what album is this from ?

  • My favorite Nick Drake song. Such artistry; at the same time, you can sense his frustration & resignation with the world.

  • My favorite Nick Drake song. Such artistry; at the same time, you can sense his frustration & resignation with the world.

  • Imagine the story: Nick is just sitting at home, alone, sometime around sundown or in the dead of night. Just sitting there, motionless and empty, staring at the floor in complete depression. Everything is quiet. Then, breaking the silence, a frequent visitor shows up on his porch. A hungry dog paws at the door, howling for just a little something...maybe a scrap of food or even just a set of eyes that see him and acknowledge his existence. The black eyes tell of this dog's condition:

  • deprived, lonely, weary, depressed. Then comes the most important, yet unspoken, lyric of the song: Nick ignores this desperate dog, this dog who considers him a friend (he knows his name, after all). Nick's act of cold-heartedness is not so much an act of cruelty, but an action derived from his own state of being. He is too depressed to move, he is too dead to care about anyone or anything. He, like the dog, has nothing left to give, and nothing left to live for. Nick just wants to go home.

  • Winston Churchill had manic depression..he referred to it as the black dog..because it's ever constant+watches your every move..well thats my analogy of the reference..I should know

  • actually a black eyed dog is a representation of death in many cultures,, they believe you are stalked by a black eyed dog before death, although without asking him you will never know exactly what he meant, RIP xxx

  • Black eyed dog is depression.

"Black Eyed Dog called at my door" - depression looms over me even at home.

"Black Eyed Dog called for more" - My depression made me do something more aka depression called for suicide.

"Black Eyed Dog knew my name" - there was no escape.

It does not make sense if it is death, as death cannot ask for more, but depression can ask for suicide. Pink Moon is about death.

  • Well said.

    Poor Nick.

I'm pretty sensitive, and I used to get really depressed at times, sometimes for an extended period of time. It seems that Nick's depression went beyond that.

Nick speaks about his growing old in this song, but he was obviously still a young man when he died. What that implies to me is that Nick was an extremely sensitive person, and was already wearied by this world and his experiences in it.

I believe his sensitivity and melancholia contributed to his great artistry.

  • "growing old and I wanna go home . . . ", that says it all. Very nice video and tribute.

  • Props on the imagery and effects added to this video. Fits the song perfectly. Much love.

  • nick drake died from an overdose o fAmitriptyline an antidepressant registered in 1961...though thngs like this really shouldn't matter!! its a sad dark song...wherein lies its beauty.

  • Great video and your right ultraata. However, this states he died of an overdose on anti-depressants, which isn't true. They didn't exist back then, it was sleeping pills he overdosed on.

  • Beautiful song, but sometimes dangerous to listen to. Last Drake ever to be recorded. According to the producer, guitar and the singing were recorded seperately, cause Nick couldn't manage to do both at the same time. Thank god he left us some explendid music. Thank you Nick!

  • Black eyed dog, is Sir Winston Churchill's description of depression.

  • Technically that's not true. Winston described his depression as the black dog, nothing to do with it's eye colour

  • Your right... just read several research papers that stated that.

  • I know Nick was depressed; but I don't find Black Eyed Dog depressing.

It gives me joy ! I believe it's a brilliant piece of work; and though technically it's not Folk music; it could hold it's own with most any of the classics of yore.

If Nick could have hung on, he'd probably be a household name by now, and drinking tea with Bob Dylan & the Rolling Stones.

  • I agree totally with you!

  • @psychkoala Nick actually played guitar for McJagger and Keith Richardson at a cafe once. His friend ran up to the two and asked if his friend could play for them, and they agreed, so Nick laid down a couple of Dylan covers and some of his old favorites. Funny, huh?

  • @cptspoofy

You know, I'd read that before somewhere, but it was so long ago I was uncertain about the memory.

As great as the Stones are at songwriting, Nick was perhaps a little better at it. Or at least more consistent.

  • its sad that a lot of ppl never hear this kind of music

  • "pink moon" is a metaphor for death. "black eyed dog is for depression"

  • I believe both "Pink Moon" and "Black Eyed Dog" are metaphors for death...from Wikipedia: "the black [eyed] dog is essentially a nocturnal apparation, often said to be associated with the devil, and its appearance was regarded as a portent of death". Then again, I may be wrong.

  • the "black-eyed dog" is a simple metaphor for death

  • Yeah go get the Practical Magic soundtrack...it's pretty darn good...got Elvis, Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell...!:)

  • do u guys know where i can find his song ive been smoking to long?

  • looks like you have a bad mosquito problem in your area

  • A very freaky song yet strangely beautiful song -- the last Drake recorded if I'm not mistaken. I read of a woman who knew Nick who simply can't listen to this song as it affects her too deeply. Love the guitar work.

  • A black eyed dog he called at my door The black eyed dog he called for more A black eyed dog he knew my name A black eyed dog he knew my name A black eyed dog A black eyed dog. I'm growing old and I wanna go home I'm growiing old and I don't wanna know I'm growing old and I wanna go home. A black eyed dog he called at my door A black eyed dog he called for more
  • excellent

  • I just read that Nick took "black eyed dog" from a quote of Winton Churchill's describing depression.

So sad he left us at such an early age. I wish he didn't suffer so much, but I can relate.

  • Yeah Churchill was a bi-polar sufferer.

Maybe that could explain a little about Nick too.

Gabrielle " Nick Said when he returned to cambridge the second time he was very happy for no apparant reason"

Any doctor who studied the evidance would say Nick was a text book case.

  • I suffer from Bipolar as well; wow, does this song really nail how it feels. "Black-eyed dog, he knew my name." Gives me big goose bumps. The dog is at my door right now.

  • Comment removed

  • I love this song. It's Nick at his most fragile; even more vulnerable than in Pink Moon. Haunting vocals, and great playing.

  • quel envoutement avec cette melodie ...d'ailleurs elle n'a pas pris la moindre ride..

  • What makes this song so eerie is that, out of world-weariness, he seems to calmly accept the black-eyed dog, symbol of oblivion, whether depression and insanity or death.

  • This song makes me cry... fuck, its so honest and direct.

    Great vid! Just brilliant!!

    Perfect mellow stuff.

  • What a Legend !!!

  • His voice sounds so frail and tormented it's almost un-listenable. There's haunting and sorrowful, and then there's just god awful upsetting and depressing.

  • Antidepressants does not have an apostrophy

    ;)

  • How fucking clever of you to spot that.

  • Apostrophe doesn't have a "y".

  • brilliant

  • it isn't, or? ^^

  • no i made it out my back window

  • yeah. it's very nice! i like that song.

  • is it that video heath ledger made?

  • Somber skies fit the song...

peace and solace to us all

  • a stunning,and haunting song.lovely video.

  • great song.
