It took me quite a while to figure out how Knopfler gets his unique sound on guitar, you can pick out his playing a mile away. It so evident in this vid, and if I'd seen this earlier, I wouldn't have wondered so long. It's that he doesn't use any kind of pick at all, so you hear a lot "pad' sound in his attack, like a classical player sort of. When he wants a more percussive attack, it seems he's either pinching a little or working a some fingernail into it. Very classical technique, really.

With all respect to all other comments on this video, I think Mark Knopfler's own version ,as recorded with Dire Straits, is still the most unsurpassable version. Knopfler's songs are Mark's only, because of his raw & natural form of expression coupled with his fluid guitar-licks in between,thus supplementing his imperfect vocal-range ,which is more than made up for by his soulful expression.

@ZadZadrack .... I agree... for me the only version has got to be a Mark Knopfler solo...but his live performance in Sydney, my God, the raw emotion in his voice is gripping. In his Wembley performance, his guitar was heavenly and as soulful as the other two versions (studio and Sydney). I don't know why, but I find Mark's voice so comforting and I love it so much.

it's fine that you don't agree with me. i am just a very big everly fan and have been since the late 50's. i like the other version but who ever sings an everly song, i just can't help but hear Don and Phil's voices.

I agree with you. Not that these two and their performance are worse than the Everly's, but i don't like the way they play this song here, especially the vocals. Ive too heard several versions of the song, and to me Everly is still like no one and unmatched .

i like emmylue harris but i have never been a real big fan of hers. i agree that no one will ever match Don and Phil and their sweet and smooth voices. they have gave me so much happiness with their music.

@SpotNFlo You really need to hear the version with the Everly Brothers, Mark Knopfler, and Chet Atkins on the Chet Atkins television special. I think it is heads and tails above this version---in fact I think it's the greatest recording ever made of this beautiful song. Even greater than the Dire Straits original.
