Sho' is!!! Nobody played the piana like Blythe, except maybe his good friend Clarence Johnson, but they were certainly each different sounding and unique.
I do some Blythe piano solos, and might post video of one of them one of these days. His piano style... I can't describe it, but very often it makes me smile... even Clarence Johnson, who was very close to Blythe stylistically and also a terrific pianist (I collect piano rolls by each of them) doesn't have the same effect. Jimmy was just a perfect pianist, that's all there is to it.
I fully agree with you ! Do you know the guy in the USA who sells rolls duplicated from original Blyhe's rolls and has amazing stuff . I can t remember his web site and I wish I could get it somehow . Thanks in anticipation . Regards . MC
The guy's name (I couldn't exactly call him a gentleman) is Rob DeLand, and he's currently attending college (again) in Illinois. His site is BluesTone Music Rolls, and he writes great things about the rolls and has a lot of excellent tunes listed on there, but unfortunately he is very hard to deal with regarding purchasing rolls from him nowadays. You can still try emailing him and/or calling him, but I can't guarantee he'll respond. Original Blythe rolls turn up on Ebay sometimes.
Just gotta get his phone number, he's a nice person to deal with, but just drops out of contact for a long time. I do wish he would stay in contact with his customers though more regularly, especially when inquire about a purchase.
From what I hear he is closing shop! Better order those recuts now folks, there may not be another opportunity!
If you are looking for Blythe rolls on Ebay, try checking any Supertone and Capitol rolls listed on there. Even if they don't list the pianist, you can look up the roll number and/or title in Mike Montgomery's Supertone and Capitol/Columbia rollographies hosted on the Mechanical Music Digest website, on the "galleries" ---> "music media" page. Also, if you see a Capitol or Columbia roll for sale that has no info for that number in the rollography, GET IT because it has not turned up before!
Jimmy Blythe was also responsible for one of the first boogies on record; 'Chicago Stomps' (1924), which became a blueprint of Big Maceo's 'Chicago Breakdown' (1945).
One of the greatest! Thanks for the post. Jimmy's solos from 00:49-01:12 and from 01:52-02:16 are fantastic! What I wouldn't give to be able to play like this!
Thanks for this great medley. Blythe is da man
