I think this fourth act of Rigoletto established Verdi as a genius. All these is goings-on while a storm rages outside. How do you arrange and organize all this sensory input? That's what genius is all about. You have to know the story to know what I'm talking about.
Rigoletto was his magnum opus until Otello three decades later, and then a few years later, considered the greatest of all, Falstaff.
One of the best performances of the quartet I've seen so far as a concert. A Performance as an Opera has different Rules ->To(MrHBc3). You can't compare that. This was a performance of outstanding voices and abilities. The duke was ferfect so were all the others.
This is not the Opera. It is a concert version of what should be. The singer may have a lot more to do that just that one scene. Plus in concert version you don't jump around like you do in the actual scene. This was beautifully done and it sounded like Verdi wrote it. lol The High D in the Sop keeps the energy going. Keep in mind, 2 of them are horny and two are angry = much NRG.
This whole concert was superbly arranged. The performances of all four were high class, both when they came out individually or together. I also thought the conductor did a great job.
AH!! Netrebko, the finest artist, and brilliant-Vocally with Regine Crespin, Monsterat Caballe', Kiri Te Kanawa, Joan Sutherland, Mezzp-soprano, Janet Baker---Acting "untouchable"!!!!! THANKYOU for posting.
La mejor versión que he escuchado esta muy bien lograda y la armonia es perfecta , aparte que la Netrebko y Garancha son muy lindas !! EL CONJUNTO ES PERFECTO!! SALUDOS DESDE LA PATAGONIA CHILENA.
Garanca is definitely the star of this scene. Rigoletto doesn't look or act like a crazed hunchbacked jester and Netrebko can only look mildly disturbed as the distraught daughter. The tenor Duke of Mantua is good, maybe excellent but not quite sinister enough for my idea of the character's character. Yes, Gananca may not be dressed like, and maybe is a bit elegant for, the hooker sister of an assassin living in a hovel, but she does her bit with voice, acting and believability.
This Verdi piece from Rigoletto is the best en most beatiful opera quartet ever written. And this version is sung beautifully. Not only by Anna. The others are fantastic as well

@mozart2306 es cuestion de gustos, a mi me parece que suena mejor el final escrito por Verdi, aunque me encanta Sutherland :D ese final me parece que rompe con la calma al final del cuarteto =/
I think i'm coming down on two possible conclusions:
1) Art is so varied you just can't know it all or
2) A lot of her art is lost in recording (see every other recorded artist ever), and while i'm used to picking out Italian or french subtleties through the recording medium, her's is slipping by. Russian art is notoriously cold cut (and excitingly so), and I can imagine that being especially hard to hear on a recording.
Here's an example of what I'm used to finding love in in opera
watch?v=Z7E445edhyw
How on the "e" in desso she launches and projects this sorrowful sound and then just as you're getting used to it it's decapitates it and the "sso" is left to sob into her chest. Then at the word "son" she almost chokes on herself.
Maybe it's not the most beautiful tone, but its one you won't forget, and for me that's what I love so much about opera: the unforgettable twisting emotional journey through music.
@Loismustdie26 - I liked Sutherland in your example, but opera did not have to end since she stopped singing. It is so very funny that you mention Sutherland, who is known for her bland performances, - as an example of a truly touching style! If anything, Joan was known for something very different – her amazing technique. Something is quite “twisted” in your mind! You sound very familiar – eradesso?
@Loismustdie26 - Sutherland was MOST CERTAINLY known for that - just Google this:
11 Oct 2010 ... JOAN SUTHERLAND, one of the most acclaimed sopranos of the 20th century, ... criticized for delivering dramatically bland performances. ... ************************
Sometimes it helps to open one's ears and to clear one's mind to be able to perceive the world impartially. It must be very boring to live in the past. Goodbye.
@09avenger All you did google search "sutherland bland" and copy paste the first thing google found. What you wrote is exactly what google found in that article. You didn't read it. Taken the time to read the article it's 3 pages of the most glowing admiration from all the worlds top critics. The "bland" reference was in a brief paragraph on the second page mentioning that she wasn't perfect and had some bad nights too.
Take your own advice and read it all, not just what you want to read.
@Loismustdie26 - stop this tantrum, my dear. I read the article even before I sent you the link. I mentioned it because you said that Sutherland moves you emotionally and Netrebko is apparently lacking that quality. I found it truly amusing and sent you the link. I can found dozen of other articles of the same content, so just accept the reality. If you like Sutherland - go to her pages and comment there, O.K?
@09avenger For gods sake the article is titled "Joan Sutherland, Flawless Soprano, Is Dead at 83". If she was bland she wouldn't be flawless, and it certainly not something she's KNOWN for.
I'm not mad that you're criticizing Sutherland, I'm mad that you think it's ok to present such illgotten evidence. Do research, listen to your own worlds, and come to an informed opinion. You're doing exactly what you told me not to do.
I sincerely admire you, because becoming an opera lover seeing what they did to opera in the last years involves a huge amount of masochism. So...I haven't any doubt about the amount of your experience, but I've more than one about the quality and mostly the RELEVANCE of it. It's evident to me that if you spent so much hours listening this trash is impossible you love opera...unless your tears were due to the abominations Opera had to suffer.
@ad80ad I'm confused, are you calling anything that's not current opera trash? Or are you saying that if you like one you can't like the other? (old vs new that is)
And it is hugely relevant, nothing fosters understanding like a comparison regardless of how good or bad it is.
@Loismustdie26 - yes, you are quite confused. I would not know the reason for your confusion, but I am certain that otherwise you would be able to recognize that this is a fabulous performance. Indeed, what is not perfect about it? Would you care to tell us? Some inexperienced in opera people might have been CONFUSED a few years back, but now, when Anna and Elina shine with their voices and acting well above the rest of the singers, you are just making a clown of yourself, LOL.
@09avenger I don't think Trebs has many imperfections, it's a well honed voice. but I hardly find that relevant. every singer, especially the ones I love so dearly, are imperfect. My issue is not in what she does, it's in what she leaves out. Simply that opera isn't just about fun sounds, there's another level to it: the pathos, or the ability to reach inside you and find that one particular emotion string and TWIST.
Trebs has an AMAZING voice, but i've never been "twisted" by her singing.
you know "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and beauty of singing is in the ear of the listener. If you already can't tell a great voice, a real stuff from the possible trash you've heard all those years (not all but the major part) , it's useless to appeal to Netrebko's true fans! Nobody can help you and HEAR for you! It's only YOUR problem and not ours! And if e.g. you can't hear that Caruso is great, how can someon explain it to you why he is great?!
@serenaluce Beautiful comment: "no one can HEAR for you", and while that's true, the final step has to be taken by the beholder, just something to listen for is all I'm asking for. Like "listen to the way she pulls the vowel in the Caro Nome" or "watch how she puts you to sleep, like she's putting to sleep her child with the way she end's that phrase" is all I'm looking for.
@Loismustdie26 So, if you know for yourself what of Netrebko's pieces to listen where she is splendid, why do you appeal to her fans then to tell you where she is good if you comdemn her as boring, bla-bla-bla. Your comment makes no sense to me. Sorry.
@ad80ad Bravo! I agree it's masochism! LOL After getting used to listening to mainly trash in opera performaces it's already impossible for anyone to tell a GEM from SHIT! McDonald's patrons are also used to eating only junk food there, so when they by mistake taste REAL food it's already tasteless and boring to them! They want their trash instead! It's mr. Loismustdie26's case! LOL Then Lois must die as an opera lover and not bother us with his appeals anymore! We can't help him here! LOL
@serenaluce I'm not going to lie, opera isn't easy to get into, it takes some time. But nothing truly wonderful in this world comes easy. Love, a satisfying career all take time, and so too does opera, but once it does, and the quaking bel canto of Sutherland reaches inside of you and shakes you to your core, it's like nothing else in the world.
I'm sorry you've never experienced that. I urge you to try. Never stop loving Netrebko, you like her and that's all that matters, but look beyond too.
@Loismustdie26 Beautiful comment. You don't know me, how can you declare what I've experienced and what I've never experienced?! You urge me to try what? To listen to Sutherland? Have I ever said that I love only Netrebko and nobody else? Where? I always look beyond. Check my channel. I like ALL voice categories! I like Sutherland very much and her Casta Diva is my favourite version. It's in my favourites! You think I'm a masochist if I favourited it?! LOL I also like Callas and many others...
@serenaluce Its true I didn't look in your favorites. And now that I look back at what you wrote I can see that's what you meant, I must have misread it the first time.
I don't know where to listen, I don't think she does those things, but that was the kind of think I was looking for someone to show me in her works.
I am an avid opera lover, spend hours and hours a week listening and watching opera, am well versed in the history of opera and have been brought to convulsive tears on more than one occasion. So I am not without experience, and this conclusion was not arrived at without a lot of consideration, but I am bored by Trebs and baffled by her fans devotion.
Will someone help me: where specifically does Trebs shine above others? Hoping to learn something new about the voice.
@Loismustdie26 I completely agree. Except I am more annoyed with her than bored. Especially in this piece. Yeah, she has great power in her voice but a lack in expressive language. I never understand what she's saying...ever. She's in an ensemble...shut up and be versatile...lol.
@Loismustdie26 Dear Loismustidie26, if your appealing is sincere to get a frank and true answer regarding the actress's works- you are welcome and I will be the first to answer you willingly .But If it's a sort of your looking for any imperfections or any mockery at the great actrees then just forget it...mr/ms diplomat.
Compared to other performances i have heard going back to gigli-galicurci,bjorling-peters,etc etc they seem to be in a bit of a hurry, but a beautiful version nevertheless I don't think the maestro would have objected too much.
@Mikeeinton013 i wouldn't really want her to stay away from bel canto(ok she could leave Lucia, Elvira and Gilda alone cuz i do not like her in those roles) but i do think she could make a bigger effort with the coloratura, you know? practice a few more hours at week and stuff like that wouldn't hurt her ;D She loves bel canto, she should know
I used to listen to my mom's 33 1/3 LP recordings of Caruso singing this fabulous song (with Galli-Curci) over and over when I was child in the 60's, mesmorized by the harmonies and passion in it. Ms. Netrebko and company are perfect here. She is captivatingly beautiful and there is no soprano better today. The ending to this song just floors me with the last two notes just poured out softly over the audience! What a wonderful thing the human voice is.
@A7madeus you will have to wait in the queue to show your affections to anna, and the queue is around the worls at least 8 times. but i agree with everything you say she is quite a woman
Here it goes: Gilda, Rigoletto's daughter, is watching her lover making a pass on the red-dressed inn-keeper, while Rigoletto's heart is breaking as he watches his kid suffering... The two flirts have no idea that the daughter and father are watching them. Divine voices, divine melody....bella figlia dell'amore....Enjoy.
Escuché y vi este magnifico concierto. Estraordinarias y sublimes voces, al igual que el director y su orquesta. Muchas gracias por subirlo"pavelrysavy".
I feel this is a perfect example of how something should be sung correctly... There is not "blending" needed, each singer knowingly understands when to bing out their part to build musicality. Bravi!!!!
Have seen this fabulous concert twice on Sky Arts, would love the DVD but its a terribly exorbitant price so great to have some of it on You Tube.......beautiful singing by all concerned......and Ludovic Tessier is WOW

Bella figlia dell'amore from Act 3 of Verdi's Rigoletto, sang by Anna Netrebko(soprano) as Gilda, Ramón Vargas (tenor) as the Duke, Ludovic Tézier Tézier(baritone) as Rigoletto and Elina Garanca (contralto) as Maddalena.
Traviata - Ms. Netrebko displayed ample power, coloratura bravura with a marvelous tone Having recently heard Natalie Dessay sing Sempre Libera at the Met Gala, one was impressed by the legato nature of Netrebko's portray in contrast to Dessay's intentional staccato, fragmented phrasing interpretation. Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.

TMC-Romantic Period. I really like the woman's voice in this video. They both do a great job interacting with each other and creating this piece. I love that the musicians are in the background performing as well.
how it could be that Anna is that perfect?!!! extremely beautiful extremely gorgeous , very beautiful voice very passionate, very good actor, very strong voice, Anna I love u :D :D
Great number; volume and visibility, timing, tempo and acting all go towards the harmonies; the 'attitude' of the women great .... Arms on hips like an indifferent washerwoman gives great effect.. Unusually well done and thoroughly enjoyable...Thank you!

of course Opera didn't have to end, and i'm glad it's evolving, but i don't get this particular evolution.
Sutherland's bland performances? she wasn't a great actress true, but one could never call her bland, and she was CERTAINLY never known for that.

Goodbye.
09avenger 1 year ago
@09avenger All you did google search "sutherland bland" and copy paste the first thing google found. What you wrote is exactly what google found in that article. You didn't read it. Taken the time to read the article it's 3 pages of the most glowing admiration from all the worlds top critics. The "bland" reference was in a brief paragraph on the second page mentioning that she wasn't perfect and had some bad nights too.
Take your own advice and read it all, not just what you want to read.
Loismustdie26 1 year ago
@Loismustdie26 - stop this tantrum, my dear. I read the article even before I sent you the link. I mentioned it because you said that Sutherland moves you emotionally and Netrebko is apparently lacking that quality. I found it truly amusing and sent you the link. I can found dozen of other articles of the same content, so just accept the reality. If you like Sutherland - go to her pages and comment there, O.K?
09avenger 1 year ago
@09avenger For gods sake the article is titled "Joan Sutherland, Flawless Soprano, Is Dead at 83". If she was bland she wouldn't be flawless, and it certainly not something she's KNOWN for.
I'm not mad that you're criticizing Sutherland, I'm mad that you think it's ok to present such illgotten evidence. Do research, listen to your own worlds, and come to an informed opinion. You're doing exactly what you told me not to do.
Loismustdie26 1 year ago
BTW...this is one of the greatest Verdi performances of the last 80 years and the greatest I've ever heard of this quartet.
ad80ad 1 year ago
Dear Loismustdie26,
I sincerely admire you, because becoming an opera lover seeing what they did to opera in the last years involves a huge amount of masochism. So...I haven't any doubt about the amount of your experience, but I've more than one about the quality and mostly the RELEVANCE of it. It's evident to me that if you spent so much hours listening this trash is impossible you love opera...unless your tears were due to the abominations Opera had to suffer.
ad80ad 1 year ago
@ad80ad I'm confused, are you calling anything that's not current opera trash? Or are you saying that if you like one you can't like the other? (old vs new that is)
And it is hugely relevant, nothing fosters understanding like a comparison regardless of how good or bad it is.
Loismustdie26 1 year ago
@Loismustdie26 - yes, you are quite confused. I would not know the reason for your confusion, but I am certain that otherwise you would be able to recognize that this is a fabulous performance. Indeed, what is not perfect about it? Would you care to tell us? Some inexperienced in opera people might have been CONFUSED a few years back, but now, when Anna and Elina shine with their voices and acting well above the rest of the singers, you are just making a clown of yourself, LOL.
09avenger 1 year ago
@09avenger I don't think Trebs has many imperfections, it's a well honed voice. but I hardly find that relevant. every singer, especially the ones I love so dearly, are imperfect. My issue is not in what she does, it's in what she leaves out. Simply that opera isn't just about fun sounds, there's another level to it: the pathos, or the ability to reach inside you and find that one particular emotion string and TWIST.
Trebs has an AMAZING voice, but i've never been "twisted" by her singing.
Loismustdie26 1 year ago
@Loismustdie26
Dear Loismustdie26,
you know "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and beauty of singing is in the ear of the listener. If you already can't tell a great voice, a real stuff from the possible trash you've heard all those years (not all but the major part) , it's useless to appeal to Netrebko's true fans! Nobody can help you and HEAR for you! It's only YOUR problem and not ours! And if e.g. you can't hear that Caruso is great, how can someon explain it to you why he is great?!
serenaluce 1 year ago
@serenaluce Beautiful comment: "no one can HEAR for you", and while that's true, the final step has to be taken by the beholder, just something to listen for is all I'm asking for. Like "listen to the way she pulls the vowel in the Caro Nome" or "watch how she puts you to sleep, like she's putting to sleep her child with the way she end's that phrase" is all I'm looking for.
Loismustdie26 1 year ago
@Loismustdie26 So, if you know for yourself what of Netrebko's pieces to listen where she is splendid, why do you appeal to her fans then to tell you where she is good if you comdemn her as boring, bla-bla-bla. Your comment makes no sense to me. Sorry.
serenaluce 1 year ago
@ad80ad Bravo! I agree it's masochism! LOL After getting used to listening to mainly trash in opera performaces it's already impossible for anyone to tell a GEM from SHIT! McDonald's patrons are also used to eating only junk food there, so when they by mistake taste REAL food it's already tasteless and boring to them! They want their trash instead! It's mr. Loismustdie26's case! LOL Then Lois must die as an opera lover and not bother us with his appeals anymore! We can't help him here! LOL
serenaluce 1 year ago
@serenaluce I'm not going to lie, opera isn't easy to get into, it takes some time. But nothing truly wonderful in this world comes easy. Love, a satisfying career all take time, and so too does opera, but once it does, and the quaking bel canto of Sutherland reaches inside of you and shakes you to your core, it's like nothing else in the world.
I'm sorry you've never experienced that. I urge you to try. Never stop loving Netrebko, you like her and that's all that matters, but look beyond too.
Loismustdie26 1 year ago
@Loismustdie26 Beautiful comment. You don't know me, how can you declare what I've experienced and what I've never experienced?! You urge me to try what? To listen to Sutherland? Have I ever said that I love only Netrebko and nobody else? Where? I always look beyond. Check my channel. I like ALL voice categories! I like Sutherland very much and her Casta Diva is my favourite version. It's in my favourites! You think I'm a masochist if I favourited it?! LOL I also like Callas and many others...
serenaluce 1 year ago
@serenaluce Its true I didn't look in your favorites. And now that I look back at what you wrote I can see that's what you meant, I must have misread it the first time.
I don't know where to listen, I don't think she does those things, but that was the kind of think I was looking for someone to show me in her works.

Dear Trebs fans:
I am an avid opera lover, spend hours and hours a week listening and watching opera, am well versed in the history of opera and have been brought to convulsive tears on more than one occasion. So I am not without experience, and this conclusion was not arrived at without a lot of consideration, but I am bored by Trebs and baffled by her fans devotion.
Will someone help me: where specifically does Trebs shine above others? Hoping to learn something new about the voice.
Loismustdie26 1 year ago
@Loismustdie26 I completely agree. Except I am more annoyed with her than bored. Especially in this piece. Yeah, she has great power in her voice but a lack in expressive language. I never understand what she's saying...ever. She's in an ensemble...shut up and be versatile...lol.

@Maggielicious21 Well that's true. Netrebko is a fine singer, but she should seriously stay away from bel canto. Just an opinion.
Mikeeinton013 1 year ago
@Mikeeinton013 i wouldn't really want her to stay away from bel canto(ok she could leave Lucia, Elvira and Gilda alone cuz i do not like her in those roles) but i do think she could make a bigger effort with the coloratura, you know? practice a few more hours at week and stuff like that wouldn't hurt her ;D She loves bel canto, she should know

Fantastic quartett - 2 great women voices: Elina Garanca and Anna Netrebko,
naturally the men, too: Ramon Vargas and Ludovic Tézier - best quality and made for enjoying this wonderful opera by Giuseppe Verdi: Rigoletto.
Thank you for sharing!

Who is ruining the comments ?
A degenerate subject, a subject crazy, mentally ill, a coward, a bit man, a vile subject, an abject and accompanied with other subjects of their own kind, of their same sordidness, meanness, vileness, turpitude. They are Hammer55292, Striker9410, Leoperarm and others.

Personally I believe that singing the notes as Verdi wrote them is a much better end to the quartet.
The high E as recorded by Sutherland et al may be satisfying to the thrill seeker, but spoils the calming effect of the great piece of music.
