i wonder if the contestants on wheel of fortune were similarly instructed to say 'S for sugar', 'T for tommy' etc?
It looks like the British wheel, compared with the rest of the world, is the lightest but with the stiffest rotation.

Correct on both counts. It was helpful on 'Wheel' so that mistakes weren't made ie. P sounding like a T or B, S for F etc.
