I dont know if anyone said otherwise but theres nothing wrong with your body, your stomach is PANCAKE flat!!! how often do we see that? You have unusually wide hips but thats a hyperwomanly characteristic, anyone who insults this womans body is nuts, she looks like the statues of Yakshi women come to life... google them ;)
You have a stunning body (and gorgeous that gold bedlah you're wearing btw where did u get it?), and when you say 12/14 you mean in US sizes or UK sizes? I'm a 14UK which translates as a 10US i believe. I think having a bit of flesh is useful in many ways and can show up things like shimmies much better than a very low body fat body. Last night when i performed i was told that my body showed the moves better than my much more slender counterpart (who is a much more advdanced dancer than me).
You are a very nicely shaped lady! Why oh why do people often have these discussions about the shapes anyway? If you cannot dance well you shape doesn't matter. I like your shape for dancing but I only wish you refine the movements and learn more about Arabic music and style.
I was trained in American Traditional Style with a bent towards Turkish style, both of which are less precise than the Arabic styles, and I do tend to use more Turkish/Greek/Armenian music than Arabic. "Cross-training" in Arabic styles is high on my priorities list.
I admit to being a tribal/ fusion & folkloric dancer (and junkie!) but this is some of the most lovely caberet I've ever seen! I'm going to recommend you to a friend of mine in Weymouth!
What if you're fat, then seeing something like this wouldn't promote a healthy body image at all, it would simply make girls feel inadequate and well...fat. Having said that this is a very impressive video. I knew someone who did this, very cool stuff.
Belly dance is *very* inclusive of all body types and sizes. It looks different, but equally good, on very thin to plus sized women. We celebrate different kinds of beauty, rather than comparing to an external standard (and that's a healthy body image). When I studied ballet, I felt inadequate and fat, but through belly dance, I've learned to appreciate my wide hips for their articulations and range, just as I admire thin dancers' snakey quality and larger dancers' amazing shimmies.
Well this video dosne't highlight plus sized women and therfore reinforces those negative sterotypes. I'm not trying to be rude, I do agree with you, but if u think in ur mind, if a larger girl saw this video, could you see how she might feel inadequate?
I think we're talking about two different things here. If a person already has severe enough issues that seeing anyone smaller than her makes her feel bad, that's a sign of a severe image disorder, and nothing beyond therapy is likely to help. And in that case, it is the person's own disorder causing her to feel inadequate, not the video.

What I am talking about is fighting the idea that only one type of body (slender, with very little fat) can be beautiful. The best way to do this is to show and appreciate the beauty of women of all shapes and sizes, rather than showing only images of very thin women and considering all others ugly and fat. Showing ANY beauty that falls outside of the official "ideal" can only help break the stereotype. At 160lbs. and a size 12/14, I do not meet the ideal
Finally, I wasn't arguing that watching my clips will make anyone feel better about themselves (although watching many clips of many different dancers of different shapes, of which I am one, can help). My comment was about *studying* belly dance, which definitely does result in a marked improvement in confidence and body image for the vast majority of women.
alright, well...in general, how many plus sized dancers do you see in belly dancing or otherwise? You probabaly see more than I do, i'm no expert... also, when u said ur 160lbs and a size 12/14, thats pretty damn good, lol. "The best way to do this is to show and appreciate the beauty of women of all shapes and sizes, rather than showing only images of very thin women and considering all others ugly and fat."
As for this video, it is meant to promote ME, and so whether it is inclusive or not is irrelevant. I was stating that the belly dance world as a whole (students and performers) is very inclusive.
While plus-sized women are rare in western dance, there are many women of all sizes performing bellydance professionally. Shareen el Safy is one of the most respected dancers in the US. My own teacher, Amira Jamal, is also larger. There were several plus-sized dancers in the competition these clips came from. There is some discrimination in venues that just want someone young and thin to dance around in a costume, but venues that care about presenting quality dance usually don't.
As for my own size, I am not plus-sized myself, nor did I claim to be; I was only stating that I am non-thin. But for the record, most plus size clothing lines start at 14 or 16, which I have been. Furthermore, most Arabic dancers are fuller-bodied than American dancers-Fifi Abdo is about a size 14.
My only quirry this whole time was that this video wasn't inclusive, but since it's you thats totally fine. I agree with everything ur saying, and also let me say you're very talented and pretty. Thank you, good day.

That's very true; it's great for building self-esteem, a healthy body image, and community.

I could argue against that but you obviously want it more...you win.

If you have more points to make, you're welcome to continue the discussion. It's not about winning, it's about clearing up misconceptions.
