  • This is the only song I listen to, besides rap!

  • Just... Mind blowing

  • I think I like this version better-- a little more dirt road to it or something

  • Dear Dobie.

'Thanks for the joy that you've given me,

I want you to know I believe in your song.'

Pass well and rest in peace. x

  • Love this version, thank-you so much for posting. Au revoir Dobie Gray, you will always live on through your music.

  • You will be missed!!

  • R.I.P. Dobie.

  • Dobie Gray, is one of the greats who knew how to sing soul, he will be missed but his spirit lingers "drift away in all our souls" this track will never date... RIP Dobie

  • A grest song by a great talent,Dobie Gray (1940-2011).

  • what the world do without this man?

come back and teach us how to drift away!

  • RIP Dobie. Drift away in peace my brother. Love this groove. Always loved the vocal, the lyrics ...and that bassline. My track to go.

  • @drummyj57 Yeah Man - a true soul trouper RIP Dobie

  • Rest In Peace, Dobie, you have drifted away from us

  • Actually, this was released by Dobie Gray in 1973. I know, I was a sophomore in high school and remember this song well.

  • 135 likes an one shit~packer:)))

  • the first video was filmed at Cypress Gardens, Florida.

  • This version is better idk it just is

  • The chorus is better since it's more than one person singing

  • This version sounds better than the version (also by Dobie Gray) I grew up on. Never heard this alternate version before.

  • 85 likes - 0 dislikes. Thats a change

  • 59 likes and no dislikes, I couldn't agree more...

  • Well, this is the version I'm familiar with, and I personally prefer the guitar on this one. Really great playing.

    Yeah, definitely this one!

  • Still prefer the other version, though this one really shows off his vocal skills. Great tune from a great artist. :)

  • beautiful, thanks much.

  • different guitar part also. Not as good as the main version in my opinion.

  • His grandad used to wok for my uncle.I think its kind of cool.

  • @emt1605

What's really cool is that now you work for his nephew

  • His graddad used to work for my uncle.I think its kind of cool.

  • This is the version I remember from my childhood when my parents played it in the 70's. I love it.

  • This version seems more relaxed, like it.

  • This is my very favorite relax me song! I love it! Thank you dobie gray! you will always be the best with this song! no remix could ever outdo your original voice!!!!!!!

  • Love Dobie and this version's awesome. It gives me goosebumps in a good way. His voice is always so soulful and deep. I wish I could sing with such feeling and heart as he could.

  • is Dobie Gray alive ?

  • @belovedsugarplum As far as I can tell from the various sites online, Mr. Gray is still alive and well. He'll be 70 this July 26 (we share a birthday heh).

  • @belovedsugarplum his music is

  • He's done a few more versions of this song, this one I've never hear before! BUT then again... I've never heard one from him, that I didn't love. Thanks for another version from the master of a sweet soul!!

  • Dayam this is a pretty bad a22 version.....................someone pass me a DOOBIE

  • i like the alternate more up tempo version but still nothin beats the original version. uncle kracker didnt do a bad job on his cover either

  • did dobie gray ever die or is he still alive i <3 this song :)

  • Damn--I always thought he was singing "give me the BIG boys and free my soul..." Then, again, I was doing 'ludes, etc. at the time-LOL. My bad. Great version of this classic. Thanks for sharing it.

  • Interesting... Still a beautiful song and voice, but trying to make it "pop" does not do this song justice. The original is tons better.

  • Wow! I never heard this version before! Kudos! I like it MUCH better!

Nobody covers this song like Dobie Gray!

The only other cover that even comes close is a live version Doobie Brothers did with Michael McDonald at a few concerts. However the YouTube posts on that are bogus. I wish someone would find it.

  • Where is this version from? I love it, along with Dobie's orginal.

  • dobie just great check my version out leave a comment good or bad its all good :)

  • This is a sweet version. This song is so hard to cover -- it's one of those songs that you don't sing -- you have to channel it. Like, the song sings you. Dobie doesn't rush the lyric either like cover bands or even Bo Bice does, he has a little hesitation before each word he sings. Laid back but so passionate. His Gospel background really brings it.

Hey, do I detect a little cowbell at about 1:07 ?

    Laurel

  • @Sparkjean I believe you do.

  • @Sparkjean almost, those are wood blocks buddy

  • @Sparkjean almost, those are wood blocks buddy ... but... he explore the space ... ;-)

  • @Sparkjean Not cowbell. Wood block.

  • @petdance Thanks for the wood blocks correction, MikeMonroe and petdance. I should have known. I played woodblocks (as clopping horse hooves) in my 1st grade choral concert for 'Here Comes Santa Claus'....in 1957.

    :)

    Sparky

  • @Sparkjean sounds more like claves, R.I.P. Dobie

  • Yeah, thanks for the joy!

  • Pure voice=pure soul.

  • Different guitar, too. Nice find.

  • Great version

    Like it :)

  • It shows that it's not what you say,

it's the way that you say it.

  • Mmm,nice. where did you get this?

  • I love this, and its original.

  • I kinda like the alternate version just as much as the original. :)

  • this was a really cool version of this!

  • cheers jf, nice!
