I used Mike's guide on the Blu-ray.com forums where he provided excellent pictures with a step-by-step guide!

Got my PS3 up and running. The hardest part was finding a reputable site to order the replacement laser. Got mine from some company in Hong Kong, Seemed sketchy, but I got the laser in 10 days fir $49.50 US.

@davidjamesduprey PS: He says he removed the security screw with an Allan Wrench, but mine was a Torx (T10). Even then, it was a pain. But once past that everything went off without a hitch.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he his was an Allan Wrench. I bought a set of precision screw bits with driver from Radio Shack that includes Allan Wrenches, Torx, Phillips, Slotted, and even POZI, which I've never seen before for about $15.

@prussell890 actually I did say "RISK" lol, but no that is nothing like saying the same about a laptop, try doing this with a PC, they are meant to operate while level, PS3 are the same, read the manual for PS3 and it warns not to do this or you'll damage the HDD, laptops are designed to be portable... and so are thier hard-drives

Eh. Warranties. Who needs 'em? I have a spare PS3 just taking up space I could use as practice. Two if I wind up getting a Slim and it's warranty expires. Still, I find the manual this guy put up on the blu-ray.com forum to be much more helpful, what with numbered pictures and close-ups and callouts and whatnot. I'm not that technical myself, but with visuals of what I'm supposed to do, I think I just might be able to do it if I ever need to.

What I meant to say was that I have two PS3s now because I have a former 60 GB that's beyond screwed, as well as a former 40 GB that needs cleaning before I go and do something this drastic. If I do get a Slim and it's warranty expires and I wind up needing to replace it's laser, I'll have already had two blu-ray drives to practice on.

@DeepSpeech Im replacing mine, to know the exact type of lens you have, you have to look at the serial number on the back and the last few digits will say something like "CECHG01" or somtin like that, you gotta match those digits to a laser, and that will be the one that works on your ps3.

i just installed a new laser with the mech that comes with it,i tried plugged in,and once i put in dvd it got stuck and would not eject,it was almost like a cd was not in there,so i took apart and removed the dvd,now everytime i put it together no dvd is read and it will just stick in maching and when i open up the tray it seems like the dvd was not even all the way into the drive even though i pushed it and it sucked it in(pause) please help my system is open as i type

It's somthin to do with the software for the PS3 home. i downloaded it and my Drive went capput! First time my Drive stopped workin so I replaced the laser, it worked perfectly until I downloaded the ps3 home software again!!!!! Somthing worth thinking about!! bluray drives dont come in different GBs i dont think mate. unless you know alot about computers and something i dont then i think you're talknig about the Hard Drive, they come in all sorts of sizes, could install a HD in your PS3 for 1TB (1,000 GB)

you have to assemble the ps3 with the disc back in the drive or you will have problems... It happened to me... it is very tricky to assemble with disc in it

depends on what you need, the KEM-400aaa is the deck. KES-400a is the laser itself. I haven't encountered any bad decks, just bad lasers. but see what you find because sometimes you can get the both at the same time, or get them separately, its up to you. just don't get any 410 stuff since that won't work with your system.

after i took off the 7 screws that make the lid, i noticed the lid in the back right corner where there are 2 screws and one of them are the small screw... that corner wont raise up for some reason. what should i do without breaking the system?

mike please help. i changed my laser but it's like the disc is not lining up right. it's not showing a game is in and won't eject. i broke the red & black wires but was able to piece them back in. it wouldn't play my harddrive games with new laser in though that could be to it sensing a game was in improperly. what am i doing wrong? do i need to check my disc alignment? also do you have to restore settings so it will sense new laser. is 400 AAA compatible with 40gb?

MY PROBLEM: hey i need help and i cant send it to sony (they wont accept it without proof of purchase and i dont have it because i bought it from ebay). Anyway a year later i have a problem. My problem is that as i was trying to fix a problem i had with the bluray drive i created another problem. i fixed the first problem but now pieces have fallen apart (the things that allow cds to be sucked in or ejected). So now i can play games only when the ps3 is dissassembled.
