I remember Atlantic gasoline on the East Coast. The only way I can remember such pleasant experiences is seeing those classic signs and other memrobilia on ebay.
Before I began seeing ARCO signs everywhere, I remembered having Richfield Gasoline in Los Angeles. Knowing that "ARCO" stands for Atlantic Richfield Company. What year was it when Richfield Gasoline became ARCO?
When I was a kid around 1973, my parents drove us down to Disneyland. Back then there wasn't a lot of anti-air pollution laws so the sky above LA was grayish brown. I stuck my head out of the window and the air burned my face and eyes. It was like being splashed in the face with lemon juice!
Thankfully, things are a lot better now, but it could stand to be improved.
Very revolutionary for its time, both in context and style. Many ads then still had the traditional jingle meant to evoke optimism instead of reality. Furthermore, the topic itself marks a significant transition between the industry-favored sector to the focus on environmental awareness. It was years ahead of its time.
The Underground City looks a whole lot like a parking garage! :)) I'm glad I didn't have to live there in 1991! :D Good commercial and thanks for posting it!
To my memory, the first few seconds of this commercial are missing, but thanks.
With air quality standards, hybrids, and conservation driven by the horrendous summertime prices among other things, this scenario is hopefully off indefinitely, if not forever.
This is an awful lot like the MacIntosh "1984" ad. This is also about the time "Soylent Green" came out, so hopefully that one doesn't come true either.
@chabba77, all of that futuristic looking underground world stuff ties back to movies made in the 1930s. Check out the classic, H.G. Wells "Things to come." There are other classics from that time frame as well that most of Hollywood has recycled over and over again.
Thank you for posting this video, surface dweller. I have been searching for this commercial for quite some time. Feel free to visit me in the underground city anytime. :)

Very underlooked commercial.

I'm glad things weren't like that in 1991. I was born in 1992.
