I don't know how to answer this question. Here's my best shot: The strings go (from lowest to highest) G, D, A, E (just like a violin), and it's got two of each note - like a twelve-string guitar.

I used to moonlight as an accordion player back in college...kinda similar, a pianist playing an accordion vs. a guitar player playing a mandolin.
