people keep talking about how things were better two years ago. they werent. at least not by much.
2 years ago, back w/ the most discussed lists, it was still usually the same people making the list. occasionally, youd get a "breakout star", but that was definitely not the norm. im guessing the "glory days" were actually back like 4 years ago, when the site was relatively unpopulated.
in sum: not all youtube's fault. part of it's just due to everything getting bigger.
I still luv youtube but it sucks compared to what it use to be, you use to be able to find random crap that rocked really easy, now it feels like you have to know what your looking for or check out what channels you like subscribe to or suggest to find good stuff

You don't just talk about what you miss or what you like about the old community, you rationalize why this is how it is and just tell the realistic aspects of it. You're right about how it's been about the money since the Google buyout which sucks but it's been a good thing to the higher-ups too. Even if they are douches.

On the topic of youtube I think that there are still quite a few people that are making original content, just not as many as before. Still, like you and Andrew said, there is no way for them to look forward to much if they are small and the bigger they are the more mundane their content becomes.
In my opinion I think youtube should just add a small tab on the main page for "featured", so as to not lose money but bringing it back.
