  • Dan Curtis directing with music from Robert Colbert, great "Dark Shadows" collaborations

  • The film first aired 40 years ago this month. Good to see that it is still popular.

  • Kolchak was a great guy, but he never seemed to understand that the general public simply did not want to know about these things!

And this cost him a great situation in Vegas - living in a great hotel, with his own hot little woman (who was too young for him but I can't see him complaining ;).

  • @6:14 Sherrif Lobo is on the case!

  • love movie wish they more then 2

  • All right! At 2:28, it's Dr. Frank Burns of the 4077th doing the autopsy.

  • how stupid could i possibly be? I clicked on this thinking it was a movie about Richard Ramirez, when he had not even appeared on the news until the 80's. This movie was made in the 70's???? And I did not put two and two together until three and a half minutes into the film. Sigh.

  • One of the best tv movies ever made! Great story, great acting, scary as hell, GREAT!

  • the day vincenzo was born, his dad left town, hahahaha

  • If ever there was going to be a big screen version of The Night Stalker, My choice of who'll play Carl Kolchak will either be Will Ferrell or David Arquette. & as for his tempered editor Tony Vincenzo i hope it'll be Richard Jenkins or Robert DeNiro. That'll be a dream cast to come true.

  • When the producer of the movie is Dan Curtyis the genius behind Dark Shadows what else can you expect. Indeed R.I.P. Darren McGavin, thank you for bringing Kolchak to life. This coming from a Gen Xer.

  • One of the best tv movies ever. Unforgettable!

  • @cynthiacher

AMEN!!!! Those 70's type movies/tv shows were made with such quality and TALENT.....

  • I watched this nearly 40 years ago.

    VERY scary.

  • You are the best, make more videos like this!

  • Fantastic TV movie!!!!

  • Great movie, tacky clothes, Seventies all the way.

  • i pus this video on stumbleupon

  • This was a brilliant TVM. It shows you what you can do with a good cast/director/script. Like the best horrors ( most of them made in the 70's) it concentrates on plotline and atmostphere. Jaded hack is confronted by the unthinkable. It is a good old fashioned horror story transplanted to modern times, but unencumbered with a sufeit of technology ( no internet.mobiles etc.etc)

captures the zeigeist of 70's America.

I saw this in '92 and it is scary than most " vampire " movies.

  • Excellent show! Thanks for uploading this!

  • Wow. that was freakin amazing.

  • working? good for me.

  • I wish I was as awesome as you.

  • You got a LIKE from me my friend!!!

  • There was a lady cub reporter at the paper who always wanted to tag along with Carl, does anyone know her real name and how old she is now?

  • Wasn't there one about a monster in the sewer?

  • @madsnow2011 yes, it was The Spanish Moss Murders.

  • Barry Atwater in my opinion was the scariest vampire ever

  • @rrip1 Absolutely the best modern vampire performance ever! Absolutely believable and chillingly convincing in this tv movie. Some genius of casting for Barry Atwater! Casting all the way is perfect. One of the best moments of 70's tv history.

  • HEY I HAVE MOVIE QUESTION WHAT CAN I USE TO CUT MOVIES INTO PIECES SO I CAN UPLOAD SOME WAR AND UNDERGROUND MOVIE

    \

  • Best vampire movie ever made. My sons argue it was "Lost Boys". Saddens me that Johnny Depp is going to take a stab at playing Kolchak. Mcgavin put his stamp on this character like Ford did to Indiana Jones.

  • @JohnWray89025 Actually , Depp playing this kinda seems cool to me.

  • @cosmicdingo Depp is great, but McGavin created the role, bad suit/straw hat, manic/annoying behavior, and verbal sparing with Vincenzo. I can't see anyone doing Kolchak and Vincenzo than McGavin and Oakland. I'm a loyalist. Sean Connery is still the only James Bond. Harrison Ford the only Indiana Jones.

  • well if you dont own this, i better not watch this copyright infringment...just kidding.. the idea of owning sights and sounds is absurd

  • I know it's probably been mentioned, but for those of us who are younger, it's always a little strange seeing "Ralphie's dad" doing this stuff.

  • Call you upload the night of the strangler

  • Worth while as a movie but when it came to the series it was the same thing every week.

  • what'd he do, throw her? HAHAHA

  • This has Kent Smith, ah yeah! Great underrated Horror actor.

Thank you so much for uploading, my mom always told me I should check out this show, I love Fantasy, SciFi and Horror so much. :)

  • i love these thanx so so much!!!!! lookin everywhre 4 them

  • I loved this show as a kid- even though it scared the dickens out of me. Thanks for uploading this.

  • @kathrynk007--These shows scared & captivated me as a kid!!

    @naysgrace--Thanks for posting these!! :)

  • what can i say that hasn't been already said. The Best

  • @LVSWTZ Oh wow! Not seen this forever!

  • @videozfann l I KNOW it's like another world now. i love this stuff.

  • Forget Twilight,THIS is what a vampire movie is supposed to be!!!

  • Now THAT, is a sparse section of the "old Strip"! lOL! I grew up here in Vegas, and was living here, right in this moment, when this TV episode, was made. i was 10. that is a great shot @ 9:50, of part of the strip up by the old Stardust. wow. so cool to see how things "used to be", not the cluttered, scummy, overly built crap that fills every singe sq. ft. now. ugghh.. i'll take the old vegas, any day.

  • You're beautiful when you're angry

  • Thank you so much for posting this. its one of the best vampire films ever made.

  • 70's are the mother of all.

  • Haha, i remember in the 1970's staying up late to catch this movie on "The Friday Midnight Movie". Cool, haha!

  • scene 6:57ish, you can see the shadows off of the cameras and filmcrew. lol.

  • This was one of the first scary movies I saw when I was a kid, I was like 8 years old. I had too sleep with the light on and ended up sleeping with my parents that night. My dad joked, "If it scares you so much, why watch it?" Because it's there I told him. Looking at it now, I wondered why is scared me, but still a great made for tv movie.

  • This movie should be among the top 10 all time vampjre movies but i have never seen it shown on any late night horror night shows. this was a ABC movie of the week back in the 70's. original in every way.

  • Why is it that Claude Akins always plays the sherriff in these 70's tv dramas??

  • @rynwin1 He just had that look lol.

  • there are other episodes the polit was with arthur anderson theres a lot of hois movies' yes i was a kids hahaha

  • The Night Stalker, is the first TV movie that later spwned a sequel and a brilliant but short lived TV series. Darren McGavin is great as Carl Kolchak an ace reporter who writes for a Las Vegas paper is also a heroic person who discovers the deadly Vampire attacks that plagues the glitzy city. It also stars Simon Oakland as his boss.& the lovely Carol Lynley . It was the highest rated TV movie of all time until The Day After booted it out 11 years later. Great classic to enjoy anytime.

  • I prefer the more modern tv series called Night Stalker. I saw it on the Sci-fi Channel and it only lasted a short while before being canceled, unfortunately. There was so much that could've come from that show. It had so much potential. The fact that it was canceled was a tragedy. T.T

  • @3Authoress

I agree with you that the show had potential and it had some good actors but the plots were not that good, and it shouldnt have been considered a remake of Kolchak completely different universes.

  • @naysgrace Tru, it shouldn't've been considered a remake, but I disagree with you about the plot. I thought it was interesting and unique. But then, we all have our preferences.

  • @3Authoress

True we all have our preferences, I think Brimstone and The Haunted were awesome shows that had potential but never got a chance to continue.

  • @naysgrace Huh, I've never heard of those shows. Don't u hate it when you're just getting into a show when it's canceled? It makes

Me so mad! They did that to the Numb3rs tv show and I about threw a fit.

  • @3Authoress

I am not shocked you havent heard of those shows just one seasons per show! It drives me crazy too, another show Millennium was on for 3 years and then bam they decided to cancel it, it leaves fans feeling really upset and unfulfilled!

  • @naysgrace Millenium... That sounds familiar. What's it about?

  • @3Authoress

It was created by Chris Carter its about an FBI profiler with a special ability. Great acting by Lance henrickson.

  • @naysgrace Nice. Is it on youtube? I gotta check that out. Yay creepy stuff! ;)

  • @3Authoress there's only one Nightstalker one Kolchak they should've called the new one something else.

  • This show scared the crap out of me when I was 7 or 8 years old. Now I wonder why. lol.

  • I live in Las Vegas. Every time I walk down Casino Center and Fremont St and turn the corner at The Golden Nugget, I glance down that alley way and think of this scene. It scares the crap out of me ! I swear that I would never walk back there alone.

  • Thank you soooo much for placing this on YouTube, this is still one of the most scary treatments of the Vampire legend on film.

  • One of the best TV movies ever made.

    Theatrical quality.

Great story, dialogue, casting, direction, cinemetography.

  • the last time I seen this show was in 1972 or when it was newly released and I was a 13 year old kid,,I remember vivadly the main commercial during this movie was brill cream,,,a little dab of brill cream on your hair,,haha,,anyway I have used my old style cam corder and made me a pretty good copy of it and burned it to dvd,,,,many of the other shows have came on over the years but not this one,,,never,,,,scary isnt it how time fly's and was sorry to hear of Mr Mcgavans passing,,,thnaks so much

  • I liked some episodes of the series, The Vampire was a good one, I also like The Werewolf and the Spanish Moss Murders, and i think was one called, The Missing link. Not sure of the title of the episode, but for the time, mid-70s, the shows a classic. I miss Darren McGavin

  • @hulkster46a

    It's ''Primal Scream''.

  • Thanks! This is great! Haven't seen this since it came out in the 70's!

  • Getting killed by a vampire is bad enough. Having Frank Burns working on your autopsy is even worse.

  • This was an Amazing made for TV flick This is what a vampire is supposed to act like hissing, bearing fangs, draining female victims of blood without a conscience to hold em back. An absolute CLASSIC!!

  • Lesson to be learned: NEVER take a job as a "swingshift ________ girl at the ________ Casino."

  • i have a pet frog

  • awsome. ur so random

  • Speaking of the X-Files., Chris Carter had written a crossover episode with McGavin reprising his role as Kolchak, assisting Mulder and Scully in a case involving supernatural killings in Chicago. but McGavin, sadly, passed away before it went into production.

  • Actually, I thought that McGavin had declined to reprise his role as Kolchak, so they created the character Arthur Dales as the man who started the X Files. The episodes were "Travellers" and "Agua Mala". He also appeared in the Christmas episode of Millennium, apparently.

  • @Clonetrooper1139 Something wrong with this story... McGavin didn't die until 2006. Long after the end of the X-Files series.

  • @termsofusepolice OK, I must have the dates wrong, but I know they were in negotiations for it.

  • This is THE BEST vampire movie, ever

    OF ITS TIME

We're talking about the narration, the character sketch, the Pre face

It's no wonder the X Files producer was influenced

  • Highest rated "made for tv movie" of its' time! There were only 3 networks then, and everyone was watching this. I was 11, and after the movie, had to go out and feed my dad's dogs. I ran all the way out there and back, thinking that damned vampire was after me.

  • @flipwiggins - me too. I was ten and in the fourth grade. Everybody was talking about this movie for a week after it was on ABC's Movie of the Week.

  • Watched this movie as movie of the week when I was 11 still enjoy seeing it from time to time added this sight to my favorites if you like this check out the night strangler

  • Thank you!

  • I bought this movie for my mom last christmas. she loved it because it reminded her of when us kids were little and scared to death after watching this movie.we would watch it every time it came on tv in the 70's.Innocent times back then.We watched and my nephew who had never seen it watched. it was a nice time. She died a few months later

  • Great quality stuff. Thanks for posting.

  • the early kolchak movies directed by DAN CURTIS were brilliant and scarrrry..after that the other shows didnt have that DAN CURTIS feel to it..

  • ooooh loved this kolchak episode...also made it special directed by DAN CURTIS who also directed DARK SHADOWS...love th music and the scary scenes..

  • This was actually a made-for-TV movie (based on a terrible book by Jeff Rice). At the time, it was the highest rated TV movie ever. Followed by a sequel called The Night Strangler.

Then came the TV series--which Curtis had nothing to do with--that lasted one season 74-75. The series had a few good episodes, but a lot of really awful ones too! One of the better ones was episode #4, a follow-up to this movie called "The Vampire".

  • oooh wow..thanx for the information..well i guess some books are good to read but not good to made into a tv movie or huge movie..

  • Actually, you've got it backwards. The book "The Kolchak tapes" was not what you would call a stellar piece of literature. BUT it did translate--ala Dan Curtis--into an excellent made-for-TV movie.

Your response should read "book not a good read, but made into good movie"

Check out the TV series episode "The Vampire", which was an off-shoot of this movie. Its here on YouTube somewhere in 5 parts.

  • @don4321 You got right about it being the highest rated TV movie! I remember that weekday evening that my parents and siblings camped out in front of the "tube" with bags of popcorn and cold drinks! ABC Television probably cleaned up that week in the ratings.

  • Thanks for uploading this movie, I was 8 when it first aired, and had too sleep with the light on all night long.

    Andy

  • thanks for posting this i love it

  • it WAS the ULTIMATE!

  • i love this move- thnks so much for posting it-

  • Thanks Naysgrace for UL this movie. This is the scariest vampire movie I ever saw. As a kid (16), I watched it and it scared the s*** out of me.

  • Thank you for uploading these......really brings back memories for me!

They terrified me when I was a kid...LOL!!

  • @kathrynk007 i had the hardest time going to bad that night! 1972

    i was 9 years old

  • @milkcan42 I was 7 and it was a Tuesday night. I had a disasterous time sleeping that night. My Dad was at work, Seattle fireman, and wouldn't have let me watch it. My Mom let my brother and I watch it & said if we had nightmares it was our own fault, I had nightmares for a few years. I was terrified that night. I still remember the details of the nightmares. What a great movie.

  • thank you so much again naysgrace for uploading this. at one time, i had the paperback and totally memorized it in one day. this is pristine and perfect!
