The Delta Queen had run for over 10 years sold out. One had to book almost a year and half in advance to get a cruise. The company didn't think she was what the public wanted. They threw her away and went modern and bankrupt. She is still around and working everyday, just unable to move.
It is sad how things work out. A company no longer cares and lets her fade away without trying to sell her to someone who does. If they would have done that.the world would have seen they had no business sence. The de
It's just political BS. The politicians don't want be responsible if something does happen, flawless safety record or not. Whether they keep a fire in her boilers or not, I'm just happy she exists!
they had no right to take the delta queen out of service,,,shes a national landmark,,our congress men want to deystroy americain history,,its bad enough that our cival war battlefields are being deystroyed,,by them putting highways through them,,and adding buildings,,americia wouldnt be americia,,with her past,,we need to keep the past ALIVE,,so our children and grand children,,can see how americia came to be,,the old, ships,,are a big part,,in our history,,the Delta Queen, and
Actually, "they" had EVERY right. There comes a point in every great vessel's life where it no longer becomes useful or even 'safe', and rebuilding it, refurbishing it and spending money can only do so much without costing a fortune.
@RocketRodder Young'n, you don't even have a clue. You just repeat and believe crap others tell you as is evident in your verbatim drivel. Grow some and then we'll talk.
@RocketRodder That boat had worked in the Sacramento Delta for years before the Greene family bought her,had her towed through the Panama Canal to NOLA & worked her plying the rivers for the next 61 years & you say that the idiots who bought her couldn't understand that any used vessel or vehicle comes w/ maintenance headaches that will cost them money so THAT was their justification for taking her out of service?Congress had been fought to a standstill since 1973 tio keep her in service.
This is one sound that should never go the way of the dinosaur! I've grown up with the Delta Queen for most of my life, both in the Greater Cincinnati area from the 1950s though 1985, when my wife and I moved to Paducah.
The sound and design of steam whistles has become an obsession with me, which has led to several patents.
