I'm just learning to ride a m/c but I drive a stick car and I think as far as shifting they are the same, when you are shifting, you let off the throttle. That's what they taught in the m/c saftey course also. Ride safe
@thehorsefly87 Good video and nice tips... I have just got a new motor bike and am learning to ride it. Just had a small question... Should I let go the throttle while shifting gears (upshifting or downshifting)?
I have a question about downshfting while your going pretty fast and you need to stop fairly quick, Lets say your in 5th gear, couldnt i just hold in the cutch start braking so the motor speed matches my wheel speed and down shift through all the gears till 1st without releasing for each gear?
when you pull up on the lever to go into 2nd gear should you still be on the gas? you said to stay on it since you are still in 1st but right when you pull on the lever should you let go on the gas? PLEASE ANSWER!!!!!!!!
Did you really just show ur license plate number?.... better hope you dont have any vids of u riding stupid or illegally.... cant believe u did that lmfao
when you up shift from 1st to 2nd, do you have to let go of the rev then pull the clutch in and change or do you keep the rev going and pull in the clutch and up shift ??????
Does the throttle get turned further each time you hit clutch (increasing speed) or does it get turned the same amount regardless of the gear you are in.
I -seriously- recommend that nobody gets onto a 600CC machine like that, and rolls the throttle that much into first gear. You'll scare teh shit out of yourself with the noise AND it'll LEAVE YOU BEHIND with that much juice.
I'm not sure I would be recommending to new riders that they roll on the throttle when in first. Especially with sport bikes, I think it's better to slowly let out the clutch and get it rolling first; then begin applying the throttle - lightly.
@Relaxantify if you downshift you NEEEEEEED to use the clutch... when you upshift, if you are good enough, then you don't need to use it all the time... but for downshifting YESSSS
@Relaxantify For clutchless shifting, your gearbox should be "pushed" by the engine, otherwise it's harder because you have to match revs. What you do is, while accelerating, you already push up the shift lever a little bit with your foot, and then drop the throttle BRIEFLY to engage the upshift. When done right, it's a single move: Your foot will move up by itself, the gear falls into place and you're right on the throttle again.
@Relaxantify So actually it's easier to shift without clutch when you're pushing hard, rather than just casually cruising along. It's just one of those things that go wrong if you're not certain what you're doing or if you think about it too much. Just pre-load the shifter, drop the throttle quickly and get on it again, there's your upshift - if you try to control every step with your mind, you're gonna be too slow and mess it up.
thanks for making a video that explains shifting, rolling on the throttle and braking so well...I think as a beginner shifting is the most daunting thing you have to do! Nice bike too :) I'm a Kawi fan myself
do you have to ease out on the clutch in 2nd gear as much as you do in first gear or can you just let the clutch go after you shift in second gear? fixing to invest in one in the next month. i just have to find a 2009 zx6r monster edition new! ima try my best to find one new at least. is it still possible to find a brand new 2009 zx6r monster edition at a kawasaki shop? and nice video man.

@jazin126 my moterbike in india is fuked lol so none of the levers work and you cant see speed or revs but still u can just tell when bike is too loud
So thats why I went wrong on my pit bike earlier :) I watched your video about shifting, I must have shifted to neutral from first while trying to find second :( helped alot :)
so do you have to rev match while downshifting or do you just kick down and let off the clutch with no throttle? The bike wouldnt lurch or strain and grind the clutch without rev-matching?
Thanks very much dude, i took a learner course yesterday and it took me a little bit to get my head around clutch gears and braking but your description is very straight forward and easy to follow +1
Just had to point out... you don't need to put in throttle while pulling in the clutch to 2nd and 3rd and what not. That's more of an advanced things once you got shifting down. That is only needed to get out of first.
What you wanna do is just let go of the throttle completely, then put in the clutch and shift or you will end up building up RPMs and you bike might jerk when the clutch is released.
You corrected your self after but I will keep this posted just for a more deep sense.
the letting go slowly that you point out reminds me of one of the first times I rode a dirt bike which I've been told are more snappy on the throttle than street bikes
my friend laughing his head of because I didn't think and just let go of the clutch
was a nice flight I didn't get hurt much either LOL
It's actually a lot simpler if you know how to drive a car with a manual transmission, or a "stick shift" if you prefer. It's the exact same thing, except on the car you use your feet to control the clutch and the gas, and on a motorcycle you use your hands.
@Luis33B0xx3r Sweet, so like a car, just have some revs and when you hit friction point you'll start moving and won't stall? But if you have too many revs will you wheelie?
@soul111smasher Hi, it's the same thing, yeah. You give it a little throttle and at the same time let go of the clutch, slowly. It'll hit friction and start moving, just don't let the revs fall below 1.000rpm and you're good to go. Do it a few times, get the hang of it, and in no time it'll be second nature to you ;) The only way you'll do a wheelie is if the bike has some serious grunt and you open the gas too fast, or if you just let go of the clutch instantly while revving it hard.
can u shift from 6th gear to 1st without having to let go off the cluth. like u pull the clutch, ease off the throttle, then downshift, while still holding the clutch downshift again, again, again and again, so that u are in 1st. then let go off the cluth and roll on throttle to accelerate? or will it choke....
I never use the clutch anymore when shifting up the gearbox, gives a much better feeling.
Took me a while to get it, but then looking back, u always wonder what was so difficult about it, and why didn't u get it sooner. :-)
Basically it's not that hard. Of course u use the clutch to put it in 1st, slowly let the clutch come out while rolling on the revs a bit, then comes the trick: cont....
Is it legal to have your licenseplate like that where you live? Here in the Netherlands they would give you a 150 dollar fine! or if the cop has a bad mood impound your bike!
Dude! Thks! I'm about to take motorcycle class to ride a moto. And i was kind of scared of '' omg what happen if i don't understand what the ladie is making me learn, how Am i gonna be able to show her that i know how tu clutch'' But your shifting and clutch vids really made me understand better a moto. Thks :D
I subbed! But i got a question.. Im fixin to get a bike so im tryin to loearn too.. So if your pulling up to a light and your in 5th gear.. Can u stop your bike in 5th gear and shift down while your stopped??
@PoLaRBeArxX18 Yes you can. Althou it's better to slow down slowley and be in the right gear instead. Since if you need to give throttle the engine wont have the strenght to move forward, which is why it's better to be be in the right gear instead of shifting all gears while standing. Hope you understood :)
i have a 07 yzf-r6 i just bought for my 16th birthday, how do i prevent my bike from flipping on me when i shift or poping a wheelie? cause ive rode dirt bikes all my life and when i got on my street bike i just sifted the same way i do on my dirt bike and the damn thing poped a wheelie and, i mean i know how to shift but how touchy is the clutch on an r6, cause i really dont wanna have that thing land on me. lol
Excellent part 2 video but I just have one question. What is the purpose of a gear 2, 3, 4, 5, etc? From what I saw, it looks like to me that gear 1 was to put the bike in drive mode. But what about the rest?
nice bike and nice vid :D when you're stopping, can you hold in the clutch and kick it all the way down to second from 5th then start braking without letting out the clutch?
can u do a complete stop like this : your in 6th gear you hold in the clutch and brake to a full stop and then kick down all the way to first gear after stopping?
@Antikaku99 Yeah, it jumps when you do that, and if your bike has enough power it Will pop a wheelie. If you cant handle a wheelie then you will probably crash. If your bike is a 600 or less you wouldnt have to worry about accident wheelies really.
@Antikaku99 When shifting up you don't need the clutch, you just shut the throttle BUT MAKE SURE YOU USE A CLUTCH DOWN other wise you'll wreck the gear box
First time your on the bike... you don't need to give it any gas unless it's 250cc or less or you facing up on a hill Just practice clutch control & the friction zone
@Jannnnl - no... First gear of course you let go slow unless your launching. 2nd gear maybe a tiny bit slow. But mostly fast after 1st gear. U don't want to stay in the friction zone. When your pro u can basically drop the clutch in all the top gears & already have engine speed matched = smooth
@therzlok: You can do that, sure but I wouldn't recoment to do it because you will lock up your rear tire by doing that. And that means you're going to crash. (and I'm pretty sure that it's not good for your engine)
omg !!! thanks soo much for that vid! (im a new rider in process of learning in a 250) you are so right about most videos having only so much to show you but that was the best on vid so far showing what is happening while riding.
at 4:43....when u said when u wanna break when u at 6th gear..u said hit the cluth n go to 5th gear rite........okay..my question is...say u goin in 6th gear full speed then u wann break,,,can u go all the way to 1st gear???..of course hittin the clucth??
i have a question:whan happens when you pop the cluthch and twist the trottle in th same time or what happens when you accelerate with the clutch popped?is it bad for the bike or is like you are in N?
Nicely done!!! Thank you from all us newbies and others that have benefited from your production. You helped me a lot. I just bought my first bike today and I'm picking it up next week I had no idea how to shift and I would feel really ignorant if I asked the salesman...lol.... Thanks again!!!!
Are you sure about that? I heard when you ride under 5000rpm its better to pull the clutch also durring upshifting, but i dont want to argue :-) Just asking
kuboss007 you are right... no matter WHAT the circumstance, its better to use the clutch than to not... Why would they even make a clutch if you didn't need it... lol... USE IT
however if speed is what you're looking for then dont use the clutch when upshifting its much faster. Although i do agree it is easier on the engine to use to clutch.
I think your talking about speed shifting and people only really use that for racing, but its better to use your clutch when shifting up unless you are speed racer or something but for regular riding us should just use the clutch
and where you ride with that bike?

When you're at higher gears and speeds, do you have to use clutch if youre not putting any gas.
When i remove all the gas and dont engage the clutch, it makes a weird noice.
so... Do you have to clutch when youre at a faster speed and higher gears with not putting any gas, and letting it just slide.

So Basically its like a Manual Transmission Car? Only that you change gear with your left foot & press the clutch with your hand?
WestLosHomiez 1 year ago
You dont have to let go of the throttle weh changing gear UP after 1st right?
ArCaNaFoRzE 1 year ago
what happens if u let go of the clutch to fast
ToDDlerDaBoSS 1 year ago
@ToDDlerDaBoSS
If you give too much gas and pop the clutch, it's likely that your front tire will take off and the bike can turn over.
If you don't give enough gas and pop the clutch it will simply stall.

can u just keep on the throttle when u hit the clutch? or do u need to let off the throttle?
cfundevil 2 years ago
When shifting up you don't have to release the throttle? I have a manual car and if the gas and clutch are in you stall.
scottyp256 2 years ago
Do you always have to slowly let go of the clutch each time you shift?
jannnnl 2 years ago
@jannnnl its a good habit to get into, but you certainly don't have to
thehorsefly87 2 years ago
hi, on the 2nd gear til 6th is it ok to quick release the clutch?
Antikaku99 2 years ago
sure, as long as you can handle it.
thehorsefly87 1 year ago
@thehorsefly87 wat do u mean on handle it
paintballerzlbr 1 year ago
@Antikaku99 Yeah, it jumps when you do that, and if your bike has enough power it Will pop a wheelie. If you cant handle a wheelie then you will probably crash. If your bike is a 600 or less you wouldnt have to worry about accident wheelies really.
zlee415 1 year ago
@Antikaku99 When shifting up you don't need the clutch, you just shut the throttle BUT MAKE SURE YOU USE A CLUTCH DOWN other wise you'll wreck the gear box
AZZ3R1 1 year ago
lmao.. u showed way too much roll on
First time your on the bike... you don't need to give it any gas unless it's 250cc or less or you facing up on a hill Just practice clutch control & the friction zone
@Jannnnl - no... First gear of course you let go slow unless your launching. 2nd gear maybe a tiny bit slow. But mostly fast after 1st gear. U don't want to stay in the friction zone. When your pro u can basically drop the clutch in all the top gears & already have engine speed matched = smooth
lifeisgood070 1 year ago
@therzlok: You can do that, sure but I wouldn't recoment to do it because you will lock up your rear tire by doing that. And that means you're going to crash. (and I'm pretty sure that it's not good for your engine)
Keita1792 2 years ago
omg !!! thanks soo much for that vid! (im a new rider in process of learning in a 250) you are so right about most videos having only so much to show you but that was the best on vid so far showing what is happening while riding.

hello!
i have a question:whan happens when you pop the cluthch and twist the trottle in th same time or what happens when you accelerate with the clutch popped?is it bad for the bike or is like you are in N?

Holy shit thanks for this awesome video. I cant thank you enough.
koolz500 2 years ago
I am a little confused when you down shift into fourth for example.
Do you have to accellerate on the throttle?
I thought you could just down-shift and let the engine slow down by itself. While just holding on the right handle. :S

Nicely done!!! Thank you from all us newbies and others that have benefited from your production. You helped me a lot. I just bought my first bike today and I'm picking it up next week I had no idea how to shift and I would feel really ignorant if I asked the salesman...lol.... Thanks again!!!!

hey nice video's i hve a question
let's say ur in 5th gear can u jst shift to N or doo u hve to shift all the way down to 1st before u can shift into N??
skylinegtr262003 2 years ago
you don't have to shift into 1st b4 neutral.
thehorsefly87 2 years ago
very good, 5 stars =)
csnooby 2 years ago
lol horse fly you dont need to pull the clutch in when you're upshifting..... only when downshifting you must.
crazygamers123 2 years ago
Are you sure about that? I heard when you ride under 5000rpm its better to pull the clutch also durring upshifting, but i dont want to argue :-) Just asking
kuboss007 2 years ago
kuboss007 you are right... no matter WHAT the circumstance, its better to use the clutch than to not... Why would they even make a clutch if you didn't need it... lol... USE IT
thehorsefly87 2 years ago
however if speed is what you're looking for then dont use the clutch when upshifting its much faster. Although i do agree it is easier on the engine to use to clutch.
crazygamers123 2 years ago
upshifting you dont need to. but downshifting you must otherwise it will damage the engine. : )
crazygamers123 2 years ago
your right, BUT its easier on the engine to use the clutch to upshift. just the way it is..
thehorsefly87 2 years ago
I think your talking about speed shifting and people only really use that for racing, but its better to use your clutch when shifting up unless you are speed racer or something but for regular riding us should just use the clutch
