  • What a talent. I cant sing i cant play any instrument but i can listen and that is worth listening to.

  • Merci pour votre interpretation, elle me touche beaucoup. c'est magnifique !

  • That was really great! I enjoyed it a lot! This may be a silly question, but are you using an open tuning for the piece?

  • great sound and feeling. And thanks for the sheet music .

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cheers!

  • the original version paints a picture like this: someone sitting in a faintly dim-lit library (in a giant mansion, of course) feeling sad and contemplative. and your version paints a picture like this: that same man pacing the hallway back and forth angrily, beneath the calmly dancing flames of the sconces. so interesting.

  • For me the original paints a picture of a girl with a black eye-patch and green-tinged hair, sitting by a rare stream in a desert land and playing a wooden flute. Next to her, in the water of the stream, there is a reed bed in which birds are nesting. The girl's music is melancholy and it makes some of the nearby birds tilt their heads to listen.

The imagery invoked by music is utterly subjective.

  • @DenianArcoleo your image is indeed imaginative and relevant - "gnossienne" is a word coined by Satie from the Greek "gnosis" meaning "knowledge" - his feminisation of it suggests either the knowledge of a female, or the knowledge possessed by a female - either way, lyrical, delicate, tender, and, like all his pieces, overtly sensual. beauty is in the ear of the beholder.

  • I enjoy playing Satie on the piano, and now I've taken up the guitar I knew the Gymnopedies and Gnossiennes could sound good on it. You absolutely confirm this: utterly delightful, with the lightness and melancholy that are quintessentially Satie. Any faster or slower and you'll go too far one way or the other - but you know that. (And do forgive improlozofia - he knoweth not that about which he talketh.)

Any clips of you playing the Gymnopedies?

  • Thanks for your kind comment, much appreciated.

  • Wonderful!

    Great performance, congratulations!

  • Thank you.

  • Hi Denian: Long time no type!! I was wondering if you play Gnossienne No. 3 and have you or could you post it. Antonio Lopez plays it on 10 string which is beautiful and I was curious to hear what it sounds like on 6 string using an accomplished player like you.

    Thanks and Cheers!!!

    David

  • Very good job! I read here things like you're playing it very fast. I see it just a variation of the original theme, which is written for piano, so obviously will not never be the same. Segovia did the same with certain piano theme by Albeniz, and all guitar players/lovers will know the result.

    Anyway congratulations and thank you.

  • Erick Satie me emociona. E vc Denian Deu um show!!!!. Imagine que sou aprendiz de violão!!! Fiquei encantada com com sua habilidade.

  • BRAVISSIMO da un italiano :D

  • Beautiful. I love the look of joy on your face after you complete the piece without error.

  • One last comment... You are playing the Konig arrangment, but it sounds like you're playing MInami's. I have both and this is my next piece to take on. Which do you recommend?

  • How do you record the sound on this? Your quality is fantastic. I just use the built in mic on my laptop. What kind of guitar do you play? It also has a nice quality. Sounds like a good Brazilian Rosewood with Spruce top. Thanks for this and your many other recordings!

  • what tuning are you in for this?

  • guitar tuning.

  • @DenianArcoleo its really in standard though? did you change the keys? I know on piano its in Fm with the pedaling of F, C, and Bb. seems to me you're using open strings to get the same pedal. Did you play this in Em instead?

  • Yeah, it's in Em.

  • wow this is incredible!

  • Thanks Nice!

  • 50 percent slower !!!!!!!

  • !!!!!!

    ;-)

  • sorry for shouting. ;-)

  • Thanks for posting, seeing you play it well really helped me figure out how to play this one. Have a great day/week/year.

  • excuse my ignorance denian!!! i thought you were someone else. that's why i was talking 'bout "your" transcriptions. sorry. nevertheless, i sustain my opinion 'bout your interpretation but i totally agree with you: interpretation is SO subjective. Regards!!!

  • this piece is so beautiful. i learned it from your transcriptions so thanks for that!! But unfortunately i must say that i feel really dissapointed. your interpretation doesn't reach me, there's no air, no dynamics, it's ackwardly too fast, and doesn't have to do with Satie at all. I feel awful by saying this, but i had to say what i felt when i listened to your interpretation. nevertheless, the transcriptions are great and they do really help!!! great contribution!!

  • The interpretation of music, both by the performer and the listener, is a highly subjective thing.

    Thanks for your opinion.

  • Did you learn it purely by sound?

Because I would love to learn this piece, is there anywhere I could find it over the internet?

  • beautiful, you play it great!!!

  • This used to be my favorite piece played on the piano and then I heard your performance here. If I ever go on "Desert Island Discs" your recording of Gnossienne No.1 is going to be one of the eight I select. Perfect!

  • Thanks HackfallUK, much appreciated!

    Best wishes

    Denian

  • your not promoting nazism fast enough broski

  • superb playing, magnificent tune...

  • Extremely well played. I wish I had the skills of your fingers, friend. I finally found a video that I can go after, in the way of learning this holy piece.

Keep on the good work mate!

Best wishes from a south american living in cold scandinavia.

  • Is the tuning standard?

  • Yes, standard tuning.

  • cásese conmigo!

  • gives me the shivers, absolutly beautiful.

  • Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

  • satie's stuff is made for guitar! I like your version a lot.

  • Beautifully played!

  • hauntingly beautiful.

  • Really nice job! I'm currently learning this on piano, just got the sheet music today. Not a very hard piece to play on piano, but I love Satie's stuff because there's just so much room for interpretation!

  • Incredibly lovely. Know of anywhere to find the free sheet music?

  • Thanks klarfitas. I believe I downloaded the sheet music for free from the site of Thomas Konig.

  • Absolutely wonderful!!! Please could u give direct link to the guitar score , i cant find it anywhere =(

  • Excellent.

  • 5 stars.

Nice tone and the guitar sounds nice as well. What maker if I may ask? I have started building guitars about 6 months ago, and i am currently working on my 3rd :)

  • It's a guitar by Rod Capper of New Zealand.

    Thanks for the nice comment.

    All the best

  • Denian: What's the tuning used on this piece?

    Thanks,

  • It's in regular tuning.

    Cheers

  • maestro, this is awesome ! beautiful sound and touch, energetic rythm. (see a beginner version at JACQUILLO).

  • Hllo Denian, Such a nice piece on the guitar... (one day I'll try on the baroque lute...)

  • Hi Luthval, nice to see you (or your words at any rate) in a different place. I love the lute videos you've put up - music from a quieter, if not gentler age.

    All the best

  • Great stuff, I really love your tone and you play everything so clean! I hope I'll be as good as you one day!

    Jolina
