  • ktchong, sorry but you're wrong. you're confusing 'republicanism' with 'constitutionalism.' And what you're talking about is completely irrelevant to this video.

  • Technically speaking, the PRC (People REPUBLIC of China,) is a Republic, but the Chinese Communist Party does not follow the Constitution and the highest law of the land. They pretty much make up or "bend" whatever laws as they like. And there's no one who's going to stop or challenge the CCP in China anyway.

  • So, a Republic should be the "Rule OF Law". That's the United States of America. It's the Rule of Law. The Law is ABOVE the government, ABOVE the People.

But in the People "Republic" of China, it's the "Rule BY Law." The Communist Party (= the government) is above the Law in China.

  • So that's the problem with Democracy. As I've stated, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and other Founding Fathers of America DESPISED Democracy.

Today, the American government and people love to talk about "Democracy", and want to spread and promote "Democracy". That goes against the founding principles of this nation, and is just wrong.

  • There are way too many congressmen in Korea. It's about time to cut a few. They're just wasting valuable tax money.

  • He is an awfully authoritative leader, even occasionally compared with Park Chung-hee and Chun doo-whan, military dictators of the 70s and 80s. Recently there was a public opinion poll on the deed of his government after its inauguration early this year. 6.5% of respondents answered 'good', 43.2% 'average', and 49.7% 'bad.'

  • The BIGGEST problem to both South Korea and also the US is that the President only has a LIMITED terms to serve. US is slightly better. South Korea only allows one which is stupid because as soon as the president comes to power, he does to have give a F*** about opinion polls. There is absolutely no way without guns to overthrow him. So South Korean president can run the country irrespective of opinion polls as long as his actions are legal.

  • Why would any leader want to run a nation based on opinion polls? Why even have a president? Let's just take opinion polls.

Do you think the Butchers of Beijing care about opinion polls? LOL

  • President Lee had been elected under the favor of what you call ill-educated, low-income classes as well as the wealthy. He was always talking about "resurrecting economy." The poor unfortunately believed it real solely because of the fact that he was a former businessman.

  • President Lee Myung-Bak is a former business man with at least 14 confirmed previous convictions, including construction law violations, election law violations, false resident registration, taking bribes, abuse of authority, etc. His brother, Lee Sang-Deuk, is an assemblyman belonging to GNP and is influencing excessive power over the party, even if he's just an ordinary member not a supreme member or something.

  • even if he's just -> though he's just

  • ktchong, you're missing the point. This isn't about capitalism and communism, which you believe to be the antithesis of democracy. This is about democracy and its antithesis, autocracy.

  • The ruling party barricaded the parliament entrance to prevent the opposition parties (which have a good number of seats in the parliament) from entering the chamber; and they unilaterally introduced the Free Trade Bill with the U.S. while blocking out the opposition. That's illegal.

  • nothing is illegal dude

well... actually I should say "nothing is illegal in Democracy"

If 51% of people agree we should practise slavery, kill minorities, kill each other, kill the earth... then thats theoretically legal.

  • Like the US and all other industrial nations, South Korea is NOT a democracy. It is a republic.

In many ways, true democracy as bad as (if not worse than) communism.

  • Republic = Country with no monarchy

Democracy = Government elected by the masses

Communism = An economy where the government runs the economy entirily.

I dont see how these 3 concepts intercept each other. US and South Korea are Republican Democracies. China is Republican Capitalist Dictatorship. North Korea is arguably Communist Absolute Monarchy

  • Republic is a state in which the Constitution, i.e., the law, is the highest authority in the land. Even the will and votes of the majority cannot override the Constitution.

Democracy is a state in which the majority rules. The majority can vote on and pass everything, including taking away the rights of any minority. Plato aptly called Democracy as "mob rule". The American Founding Fathers HATED -- I mean, DESPISED -- democracy, and they wrote numerous articles.

  • Now, a Republic *can* have bad laws, a bad set of constitution, as its foundation. For examples, many Islamic nations have Islamic laws as the foundation and constitution of their republics.

The Republic of the U.S. happens to have a good Constitution, one that respects individual liberty and rights as the foundation.

The U.S. is NOT a democracy, and it should be one.

The U.S. is a republic, a democratic representative republic.

  • In a Republic, even the majority, (i.e., the so-called will of the people,) cannot override the Constitution, the Law, which serves as the foundation of the state.

So, if the American majority (which are White) decide to get together one day to vote, and take away the rights of a minority group, let say Jews or Blacks, they can't -- because the Constitution (i.e., the Equal Protection Clause) does not permit it. And the Constitution overrides the majority and the will of the People.

  • Communism is just an economic system in which everything is shared among the People, and *individuals* cannot own properties, i.e., capital and means of production.

Arguably, Communism is a natural outcome of Democracy. Because the wealthy (the upper class) are always in the minority, and the majority are always not as well-off. When the majority can vote on anything and everything, they will always want to vote and take away the wealth and power of the upper class. That's the problem.

  • the people can rewrite the constitution silly so the constitution is still subject to their will

  • wow i hope that my country wont get affected:) lets just all pray that this crisis wont really destroy the world:)

  • the north should nuke south, better united with the north.

  • Go China!!!!

o wait... its only Koreans fighting each other

  • fuck china, taiwan is also a disgrace.

  • Man, things are messed up everywhere. With U.S. Bernard Madoff screwing up the investors with $50B, shoes thrown to Bush, the governor of IL tried to sell former Senator Obama's seat, and the Korean politics haven't shown much progress in their agenda.. Ah,,what a crazy world..

At least they seem pretty passionate about whatever they are trying to do. :)

  • ok i guess you dont know whats really going on in S korea. the GNP illegally occupied the parliamentary chamber and unilaterally introducing the bill. w/ the oppposition outside and left outside no one had a chance to vote against it...this is the same shit like the patriot act....<

  • HAHA!!! Everything is poured into the U.S. this is a dependent natio...They are suffering because they are slowly being cut off of their (U.S.) support system...BACK TO "Made In The USA" until the all out SHUTDOWN!

  • They were doing the right thing. This "new free trade" agreement is just the new world order. We MUST keep fighting.

  • only in korea, my friends... only in korea. hot blooded and always lose their temper. this is a microcosm of korean society. they will never learn. "you don't undertsand korean culture.." what?!

this has nothing to do with culture you stupid mama's boy! it's just about common sense!! Bunch of whiners in this country.

  • Definitely the whiniest people I've ever met!!

  • animals!!

  • The S. Koreans hope with every election they'll get cleaner, better functioning government and what they get is more of the same. My respect & sympathy to them.

  • first the shoe, now this...smh

  • Fukin Koreans

  • sooo wild!

  • I hope Obama undoes all this stuff when he gets into office. Bush is an idiot.

  • DAMN.....

    DUMB MOTHERFUCKERS

  • Korean want to sell in USA but they don't want to let american goods in. I hope that the US people will take this into account

  • Democracy at it's finest. I'll vote for the first lawmaker willing to use a sledgehammer at a moments notice any day of the week.

This is a great day for the voters of that country!

  • Neoliberalism has truly seen better days.

    Good thing, too.
