We are very lucky that sound films started just in time to catch a handful of the late Victorian and Edwardian Music Hall performers. Some date from the early 1920's on De Forest sound films shot in the UK, some Performers died just too soon, like Marie Lloyd. Lily Morris was quite a character in real life, performing long into so called retirement.
MeabhMc: Don't waste your time. Lily Morris was an old-time music-hall (vaudeville if you're American) star and this is her interpretation of an old music-hall song. There is no "character", she doesn't have a name, personality or background and the situation is obvious from the words of the song. Just sing it as best you can!
Could someone tell me about the Character she plays in this: Name/ personality/ situation? Because I am performing it for an exam and would like to know about the Character's background? Please if you could as it would really help me out!?
@MeabhMc have you found out anything about it? I'm doing my grade and i have to talk about this song and yet i know nothing about the musical or the character!!!
I saw this on the TV when I was a youngster and thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen, it sparked an interest in British Music Hall. Thank you so much for posting this, it's brought back some very happy memories, it has been my party piece on occasion - LOL!
I managed to first see this clip when the film was broascast on a satellite channel about 2 years ago. Thanks for posting it in its full version - a joy and a wonder!!!!!
Thanks for this and all the other clips form this elusive and historic film! I think the end is missing becuase it goes into the adversts - note the 'cue dots' on the top right corner - the broadcasters' signal to local stations to have their ads ready.
The missing tail end of the clip is on the DVD 'Cinema Europe: The Other Hollywood".
@jozefsterkens The whole performance, in good quality reproduction, is available on a dvd called A Little of What You Fancy, a 1968 TV doc made by Robert Webb, together with a good range of other original music hall performers filmed in the 1930s. Recommended.
